Enjoyable
Revisado: 09-27-23
The writing and performance are wonderful. The story itself was good, a bit slow at times but definitely enjoyable. Glad I bought it.

Historia
Everyone has wanted their favorite book to be real, if only for a moment. Everyone has wished to meet their favorite characters, if only for a day. But be careful in that wish, for even a history laid in ink can be repaid in flesh and blood, and reality is far deadlier than fiction...especially on Addington Isle.

Like one long chase scene or slasher film
Revisado: 11-02-22
The writing was very good, but the plot…well, I hate car chases in movies. They are boring and rarely do they move the plot along. This book reminded me of one long car chase scene. Also like a slasher film. Yes there’s some setup, and in the end you usually find out why the slasher does what he (usually a “he”) does…but the time in between is just adrenaline. Might be some folks’ idea of a good time, but not my cup of tea. I found the book fairly dull. I read comparisons with the Hunger Games, but I disagree. I loved the Hunger Games which was infinitely more interesting and the “game” served to move the more complex plot along.

Historia
Agnes is a wild creature who walks her family’s land with a falcon on her glove and is known throughout the countryside for her unusual gifts as a healer, understanding plants and potions better than she does people. Once she settles with her husband on Henley Street in Stratford-upon-Avon, she becomes a fiercely protective mother and a steadfast, centrifugal force in the life of her young husband, whose career on the London stage is taking off when his beloved young son succumbs to sudden fever.

Tedious and repetitive
Revisado: 02-17-22
I bought this book on the recommendation of a friend who liked it, and who knows I like historical fiction.
But OMG what a waste of 12 hours. I learned almost nothing about William Shakespeare (whose plays I love) and learned very little about Shakespeare's family (wife, 2 daughters, son, lived apart for much of his adult life. That's about it). I learned nothing I didn't already know about life in the late 1500's (plague is carried by fleas...did you know?). The vast majority of the book (SPOILER ALERT) is about a family processing the grief of losing a child. Many (many many MANY) flitting memories of the child doing this, doing that, smiling, running, etc. etc. etc.. Many descriptions of the crushing almost physical weight of missing the child. Many descriptions of the sadness of coming to terms with the child being gone forever. And on. And on. And on. Hours and hours (literally) of description of the family processing their grief. I learned little, was introduced to no ideas worth thinking more about that I can recall, and spent dreary hours listening to an author describe facets of loss and grief - but not in an enlightening way. She has nothing new to say about grief or about Shakespeare that I can discern. Save your time and money and buy the recent rewrites of MacBeth and Hamlet, they are far superior to this dullard of a book.

Historia
Anna does boring things for terrible people because even criminals need office help and she needs a job. Working for a monster lurking beneath the surface of the world isn’t glamorous. But is it really worse than working for an oil conglomerate or an insurance company? In this economy? A sharp, witty, modern debut, Hench explores the individual cost of justice through a fascinating mix of millennial office politics, heroism measured through data science, body horror, and a profound misunderstanding of quantum mechanics.

Historia
It is 997 CE, the end of the Dark Ages. England is facing attacks from the Welsh in the west and the Vikings in the east. Those in power bend justice according to their will, regardless of ordinary people and often in conflict with the king. Without a clear rule of law, chaos reigns. In these turbulent times, three characters find their lives intertwined.

Yes, it’s basically the same story as the other Kingsbridge books: underdog poor hero, rich powerful evil men, one token strong woman ...but it’s fun to listen to. I definitely enjoyed it.

Historia
In her mesmerizing fourth work of fiction, Sue Monk Kidd takes an audacious approach to history and brings her acclaimed narrative gifts to imagine the story of a young woman named Ana. Raised in a wealthy family with ties to the ruler of Galilee, she is rebellious and ambitious, with a brilliant mind and a daring spirit. She engages in furtive scholarly pursuits and writes narratives about neglected and silenced women. Ana is expected to marry an older widower, a prospect that horrifies her. An encounter with 18-year-old Jesus changes everything.

Lovely
Revisado: 08-27-20
Having read a number of nonfiction scholarly books about the (true) life of Jesus, I found this book to reasonably represent one side - the personal, non public side - of what the man might have been like. Kidd takes no position on his deity while weaving a plausible story of his personal life. But the story is less about Jesus and more about his wife. Given the mention in recently-found ancient documents of Jesus’ wife, and also given the societal context of the time (wherein Jewish men were expected to marry), the story is a lovely speculation on what that wife, If she actually had existed, might be like.

Historia
She used to work for the US government, but very few people ever knew that. An expert in her field, she was one of the darkest secrets of an agency so clandestine it doesn't even have a name. And when they decided she was a liability, they came for her without warning. Now she rarely stays in the same place or uses the same name for long. They've killed the only other person she trusted, but something she knows still poses a threat. They want her dead, and soon.

Historia
Jane’s days at a Midwest insurance company are perfectly ordinary. She blends in well, unremarkably pretty in her floral-print dresses and extra efficient at her low-level job. She’s just the kind of woman middle manager Steven Hepsworth likes - meek, insecure, and willing to defer to a man. No one has any idea who Jane really is. Least of all Steven. But plain Jane is hiding something. And Steven’s bringing out the worst in her.

Light fiction, not terribly complex but a good read. Keeps you wanting to read on to see what happens. Jane is smart and devious but definitely a (very) flawed heroine of the story.
