Highly recommend
Revisado: 12-20-24
it's important to know that this is historical fiction. The book gets a number of things in the Bible wrong so if that is going to bother you, you may want to choose a different book.
That said, this book is great and I greatly enjoyed it.

Historia
We live in a world that’s obsessed with talent. We celebrate gifted students in school, natural athletes in sports, and child prodigies in music. But admiring people who start out with innate advantages leads us to overlook the distance we ourselves can travel. We underestimate the range of skills that we can learn and how good we can become. We can all improve at improving. And when opportunity doesn’t knock, there are ways to build a door.

Not his best work
Revisado: 03-09-24
Some good insights but not Adam Grant's best work.
Analogies are leaned on too much and mostly a retelling of others work.

Wandering, pointless and boring

I found the story to wander without purpose but most importantly I found it boring.

Historia
In the tiny English village of Fardles, a practitioner of black magic has located the Holy Graal in the sacristy of the local Anglican church. Intent on possessing it so as to amplify his own nefarious powers, he tries to trick its guardian into donating it. When that fails, he resorts to theft. Thus begins a tug-of-war between powers infernal and celestial, between a magician who would use the Sacred as an instrument of his own will, and an Archdeacon who seeks to protect and preserve what is sacramental and holy.

An audacious story
Revisado: 05-21-23
As with Charles Williams' other writings, this is a bold and visual story that isn't predictable.
I feel like I have to read it again to get all the details portrayed.

Published four years after Rousseau's death, Confessions is a remarkably frank and honest self-portrait, described by Rousseau as "the history of my soul". From his idyllic youth in the Swiss mountains, to his career as a composer in Paris and his abandonment of his children, Rousseau lays bare his entire life with preternatural honesty.

Enjoyable read
Revisado: 02-15-23
The first half of this book does stay relatively faithful to the title. Jean-Jacques shares some confessions that impacted others in some cases profoundly. In doing so, his faults are relatable, and he becomes likable.
The second half reveals him for who he really is, and the unflattering results are clearly not what he intended. By the end, you feel you know him very well and would probably not like to meet him.
The book turns from confessions to accusations about everyone and anyone. He seems to want to say, 'see, I'm not as bad as everyone else!'.
The audible narration is fantastic and makes the story very enjoyable.

Historia
A modern classic, Einstein's Dreams is a fictional collage of stories dreamed by Albert Einstein in 1905, when he worked in a patent office in Switzerland. As the defiant but sensitive young genius is creating his theory of relativity, a new conception of time, he imagines many possible worlds. In one, time is circular, and people are fated to repeat their triumphs and failures over and over. In another, there is a place where time stands still, visited by lovers and parents clinging to their children.

Surprisingly Awesome
Revisado: 02-13-23
The negative reviews just don't understand that the book is a thought experiment about time and how time could be different. Either that or they have a limited imagination.
it's true the book doesn't really have a story arc, but I enjoyed every minute, and it really got me thinking. it also made me appreciate life more, which is not easy for a book to do.

That was Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke’s vow as the worst financial panic in more than fifty years gripped the world and he struggled to avoid the once unthinkable: a repeat of the Great Depression. Brilliant but temperamentally cautious, Bernanke researched and wrote about the causes of the Depression during his career as an academic. Then when thrust into a role as one of the most important people in the world, he was compelled to boldness by circumstances he never anticipated.

Whatever it takes
Revisado: 01-01-23
A good book that does an excellent job of articulating the events of the banking/ mortgage crisis.
I think the criticism of the Fed and the Treasury is easy after the fact. It is clear to me that if actions weren't taken another depression was likely.
Meanwhile US politicians care about how things are perceived and have no courage. They wouldn't have passed a vote earlier because they almost didn't pass it later when the situation was dire.
I hate the bad practices that led to the situation but I'm glad someone was willing to do 'Whatever it takes' to prevent a second depression.
