But the narration…
Revisado: 09-10-23
If you’re going to break up the narration duties, why not ensure that there’s a pronunciation guide to ensure some continuity? Every narrator has a different take on significant names (like Herodotus) and it’s distracting and annoying.
Also, while I appreciate the ideology behind using more authentic voices on the narration, some narrators don’t seem like professional voice artists. This is problematic.
I’m persisting because it’s a great book, but sometimes I feel like giving up.

Historia
The theory that Shakespeare may not have written the works that bear his name is the most horrible, unspeakable subject in the history of English literature. Scholars admit that the Bard’s biography is a “black hole,” yet to publicly question the identity of the god of English literature is unacceptable, even (some say) “immoral.” In Shakespeare Was a Woman and Other Heresies, journalist and literary critic Elizabeth Winkler sets out to probe the origins of this literary taboo.

Sick of ‘jag-wires’
Revisado: 07-27-21
Poorly written. Poorly narrated. This entire series is a must-avoid. While the information *may* be vaguely reliable, this audiobook features shocking grammar and bewildering pronunciation (eg: jag-wire for Jaguar consistently throughout) that it is unlistenable. Don’t waste your credit.

Historia
Ryland Grace is the sole survivor on a desperate, last-chance mission - and if he fails, humanity and the Earth itself will perish. Except that right now, he doesn't know that. He can't even remember his own name, let alone the nature of his assignment or how to complete it. All he knows is that he's been asleep for a very, very long time. And he's just been awakened to find himself millions of miles from home, with nothing but two corpses for company.

It’s no Martian, but…
Revisado: 05-19-21
The Martian was a high bar. This book is thoroughly enjoyable, but not quite as good. Still worth the credit though. Ray Porter did a great job, but for me, his voice is too closely associated to the Bobiverse books, and it ffelt like another in that series.

Historia
The name Captain James Cook is one of the most recognisable in Australian history - an almost mythic figure who is often discussed, celebrated, reviled and debated. But who was the real James Cook? This Yorkshire farm boy would go on to become the foremost mariner, scientist, navigator and cartographer of his era, and to personally map a third of the globe. His great voyages of discovery were incredible feats of seamanship and navigation.

Great. But...
Revisado: 05-01-21
This book was incredibly well written. Except that Mr FitzSimons hasn't met a rhyme, alliterative passage or homophone he didn't want to belabour in a terrible, tiresome and tedious fashion. Seriously, I'd be listening with great enjoyment, when I'd be taken out of the moment by Fitz shoehorning a clanging, banging, haranguing rhyme into the text.
Fitz: It may read fine on paper, but LISTEN to someone read one of your books aloud and then you'll hear!

Oh my god, the narration!
Revisado: 08-23-20
What a terrible narrator! From her overacting and annoying voice to her super-annoying mispronunciations, it was just dreadful, I have no idea if this is a good story or not because I simply cannot listen to it. I chose this book because I have read Joanna Penn's non-fiction, which I find helpful and well-narrated, and I have listened to her podcast (which is also excellent), so I decided to give her fiction a go. Well Joanna, if you're reading this, never hire Ms Giguere again!

The book will significantly add to your enjoyment of Star Trek: Picard. Sure, you don't need it, but I found that it already enhanced my understanding of Episode 5. Well worth reading in my humble opinion.
