Historia
This Pulitzer Prize-winning history of World War II chronicles the dramatic rise and fall of the Japanese empire, from the invasion of Manchuria and China to the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Told from the Japanese perspective, The Rising Sun is, in the author’s words, "a factual saga of people caught up in the flood of the most overwhelming war of mankind, told as it happened - muddled, ennobling, disgraceful, frustrating, full of paradox."

Excellent!
Revisado: 07-23-23
I have read, watched, and listened to many documentaries and books on World War II, and I found this one to be highly enjoyable. The writing is superb, as is the narration. The length of the book may turn off some people, but I think it’s well worth it. Although I am by no means an expert on World War II, I found the content very objective without any pro-war or anti-war sentiment. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in World War II or recent Japanese history.

Jack Torrance's new job at the Overlook Hotel is the perfect chance for a fresh start. As the off-season caretaker at the atmospheric old hotel, he'll have plenty of time to spend reconnecting with his family and working on his writing. But as the harsh winter weather sets in, the idyllic location feels ever more remote...and more sinister. And the only one to notice the strange and terrible forces gathering around the Overlook is Danny Torrance, a uniquely gifted five-year-old.

King being King
Revisado: 01-18-23
There isn’t much to say that hasn’t already been said by everyone else. I’ve read/listened to dozens of King’s books, and this is one of his best. I actually enjoy the narration, but it took me half an hour or so to actually get into it as it sounds sort of monotone in the beginning. Danny and Wendy’s voices are done so well, and don’t get me started on Hallorann! The narration for Hallorann is worth the price of admission alone. This isn’t one of King’s longer works, which is a positive, as not many casual listeners could probably tolerate the 48 hours of The Stand. If you haven’t read a lot of King, this is a great place to start.

Historia
From 1337 to 1453 England repeatedly invaded France on the pretext that her kings had a right to the French throne. Though it was a small, poor country, England for most of those "100 years" won the battles, sacked the towns and castles, and dominated the war. Desmond Seward's critically acclaimed account of the Hundred Years War brings to life all of the intrigue, beauty, and royal to-the-death-fighting of that legendary century-long conflict.

A Clear and Concise Overview
Revisado: 09-21-22
I had never thought much about the Hundred Years War until listening to The Great Mortality by John Kelly (which I also highly recommend). I have gained a greater appreciation for the Black Death and the Hundred Years War since they overlapped and directly affected each other. I’m regards to this specific book, I found it very clear about the progression of the war while still spending adequate time of some of the more important details and sharing accounts of how the average citizen was affected in both England and France. The only thing I found lacking was a deeper investigation of the French and how they responded. While the author does summarize the political problems in France and how the English were involved, I felt that this book was written primarily from English perspective, which I completely understand since the English tended to be the instigator and invading force almost all of the time. I will definitely be listening to this hook again for a second time since I probably missed some thing due to the fact that I’m an American who has never heard of many of the place names, and had to spend a little extra time trying to piece it all together in my mind. I highly recommend this book! Especially to those like me who have little to no understanding of the Hundred Years War.

In this groundbreaking look at the Cuban Missile Crisis, Martin Sherwin not only gives us a riveting sometimes hour-by-hour explanation of the crisis itself, but also explores the origins, scope, and consequences of the evolving place of nuclear weapons in the post-World War II world. Mining new sources and materials, and going far beyond the scope of earlier works on this critical face-off between the United States and the Soviet Union — triggered when Khrushchev began installing missiles in Cuba at Castro's behest....

Don’t Underestimate the Power or Luck
Revisado: 02-04-22
A very fantastic book. I really enjoyed and appreciated the unbiased (in my opinion) content of this book. Hearing what happened in both the USSR and US shows that we aren’t that different and that no one wanted a war. The narrator is excellent and did not try to sound Russian when quoting Nikita Khrushchev, which I very much appreciated because that tends to take away from the seriousness of the content. This is an excellent book!

Good Narration, Unimpressive Writing
Revisado: 08-17-21
I’ve listened to many books on Audible as well as having read even more. In my opinion, this book is mediocre at best. I believe that much of the material is repetitive and uses very typical characters. There are some phrases as well that were nice to hear once but their overuse becomes annoying. This book brings nothing new to the table but isn’t a waste of time as it does have some interesting character development. Don’t expect greatness if you decide to listen to The Omen.

Historia
La moria grandissima began its terrible journey across the European and Asian continents in 1347, leaving unimaginable devastation in its wake. Five years later, 25 million people were dead, felled by the scourge that would come to be called the Black Death. The Great Mortality is the extraordinary epic account of the worst natural disaster in European history - a drama of courage, cowardice, misery, madness, and sacrifice that brilliantly illuminates humankind's darkest days when an old world ended and a new world was born.

Fascinating
Revisado: 12-18-20
This a great and rather short introduction to the Black Death and Y. pestis. Some reviewers have noted the redundancy in some of the text, some of which is almost exclusively journal entries by contemporaries. I do agree that it can seem like the same thing is repeated several times but I want to point out that the interesting thing is that all of these entries are by different persons at different places. eg. Florence, Paris, England, etc. Kelly brings the humanity, and lack thereof, of the people who lived and died during the pandemic. I found the narrator interesting and have no complaints about him. Perhaps a little monotone at times.

I really appreciate this book and narrator. The narrator having a British accent made listening to this book more akin to having Churchill standing next to me and telling me about his life story.

Historia
Leland Gaunt opens a new shop in Castle Rock called Needful Things. Anyone who enters his store finds the object of his or her lifelong dreams and desires: a prized baseball card, a healing amulet. In addition to a token payment, Gaunt requests that each person perform a little "deed", usually a seemingly innocent prank played on someone else from town. These practical jokes cascade out of control, and soon the entire town is doing battle with itself. Only Sheriff Alan Pangborn suspects that Gaunt is behind the population's increasingly violent behavior.

Castle Rock
Revisado: 10-25-20
As with much of King’s work, you’ll get more enjoyment out of his books after you’ve read others. I’ve listened to this one twice and appreciate it much more this second time through than the first. I have seen some questions on why this is the ‘last’ Castle Rock book, and if you are another Constant Reader, you’ll probably know why almost immediately. The three are Cujo, the Darker Half, and finally Needful Things. Although not his best work, it’s certainly entertaining and he does a good job narrating it. My one gripe is that the small musical breaks that happen between many of the chapters seemed extremely loud to me compared to the text, at least while wearing headphones.

First, Frank Miller is at his best, which is by far the best I’ve ever heard. His narration brings a great story into an amazing wonderland and brings us to mid world... and closer to the Tower. If you’ve read or listened to all seven books in the Dark Tower series by King, you’ll really appreciate the surprises and references in this amazing book!

As if a zombie apocalypse wasn't bad enough, the country is also in the throes of a second Civil War. Massachusetts has closed its borders to everyone, including the 101st Airborne Division and five million desperate refugees. It's an act of rebellion that the President won't stand for, and with nuclear missiles flying by the hundreds in China, he mulls the idea of using nukes on American soil for the first time.

‘Day 4’ of the apocalypse is really good and saves the series! Don’t give up after the ending of day three!
Revisado: 06-05-20
To those who have listened to or read the first three days of the apocalypse, you may have been furious and disgusted if it’s extremely week attempt of an ending. The third day of the apocalypse was far beyond unfinished, and if I didn’t have an extra Audible credit laying around, I wouldn’t have listened to the fourth day; I’m sure glad I did! If you’ve experienced the first three days and enjoyed them, as I have, you may have been frustrated, clenching your fists, and using a lot of four letter words. There are countless story lines incomplete plot development and characters in need of what this book delivers!
Day four completes many of the story lines of the first three days and finishes with the only ending appropriate to this series. T ‘Hitchcock Ending” of this book, which, in my opinion, is the only rational way to wrap things up. The deepening plot and character development of the fourth day of the apocalypse saves the whole series from a painful and torturous death and a waste of everyone’s time. The narrator is amazing in his delivery of the narrative, even though he doesn’t have a completely different voice for every character. The simultaneous story lives make this a minor detail worth no consideration. This series could have been dull without the amazing narration by the same person throughout all of the books. Some of the previous days were more interesting and captivating than day four... but maybe that’s because I’ve come to accept that smart child zombies creating traps and adult zombies, who only keep a slim part of their humanity by downing huge amount of opiates and Valium, are just as normal as someone mowing their grass when it’a too tall. Meredith’s idea of zombies is completely different than any other tale or story of zombies I’ve ever seen, and it works like a charm.
The highlights: BUY THIS BOOK if you like the first three days of the apocalypse. You will not be disappointed in the least!
