Historia
The Hundred Years War (1337-1453) dominated life in England and France for well over a century. It became the defining feature of existence for generations. This sweeping book is the first to tell the human story of the longest military conflict in history. Historian David Green focuses on the ways the war affected different groups, among them knights, clerics, women, peasants, soldiers, peacemakers, and kings.

A truly telling rendition of the 100-Years War
Revisado: 01-10-24
If one would like to step away from the pedestrian renditions of late medieval combat and better understand the socioeconomic dynamics of Franco-Anglo war, I think this is an excellent place to start.

Historia
The bitter conflict between England and France we call The Hundred Years War, and lasting 116 years between 1337 and 1453, was fought over claims by the English kings to the French throne. By the end of this titanic struggle, it can fairly be said that the Middle Ages had come to an end.

Totally Anglo-centric
Revisado: 12-15-23
An obviously biased tension of history with the author constantly referring to “our” army when describing English actions. I stopped listening about a quarter through and started searching for a more unbiased rendition of the 100 Years War.

Great rendition of a well known subject.

Minor technical flaws (indicates a C-47 has 4 engines) don’t distract from a good book and a great reading.

Historia
On November 15, 1959, in the small town of Holcomb, Kansas, four members of the Clutter family were savagely murdered by blasts from a shotgun held a few inches from their faces. There was no apparent motive for the crime, and there were almost no clues.

Will not disappoint!
Revisado: 09-23-23
Growing up in Kansas and working in area around Holcomb and Garden City, the Clutter murders were known to me. I had seen the movie and enjoyed it. I had even driven by what was once the River Valley Farm homestead. The full text of Truman Capote’s masterpiece and the fittingly powerful reading by Scott Brick thoroughly brought the chilling events together. An enlightening chapter in the book of the darkest aspects of human nature.

Historia
The history of human civilization is an astonishing story of migration, innovation, and social development. Now, the exciting new field of "big history" allows us to explore human civilizations in ways unavailable to historians of previous generations. Big history scholars take a multidisciplinary approach to study great spans of time, unlocking important themes, trends, and developments across time and space.

Historia
Six days ago, astronaut Mark Watney became one of the first people to walk on Mars. Now, he's sure he'll be the first person to die there. After a dust storm nearly kills him and forces his crew to evacuate while thinking him dead, Mark finds himself stranded and completely alone with no way to even signal Earth that he’s alive - and even if he could get word out, his supplies would be gone long before a rescue could arrive. But Mark isn't ready to give up yet.

Well delivered
Revisado: 02-17-23
As is so often the case, the ending in stories like this is a bit predictable. The Martian is no exception. However, the Watney narrative is very interesting and full of gallows humor. I certainly recommend this reading.

Historia
The author could be described as a veteran in every sense of the word, even though he was only age 21 when the war ended. Armin Scheiderbauer served as an infantry officer with the 252nd Infantry Division, German army, and saw four years of bitter combat on the Eastern Front, being wounded six times. This is an outstanding personal memoir, written with great thoughtfulness and honesty.

Outstanding on all Fronts!
Revisado: 12-24-22
A moving recount of what is likely one of the most brutal theaters of WWII. The atrocities committed by both regimes and the brutalities of combat are set aside to chronicle the life of a frontline officer. Unique insights into the thoughts and beliefs of a very young lieutenant are prosaically recounted. The performance imparts a youthful tenor and helps convey the resignation and emotion of retreat and defeat tempered by professional pride. An excellent audio book!

Historia
From the earliest recorded history of the Russian state, its people have sought to define their place in the world. And while many of us look to make sense of Russia through its political history, in many ways a real grasp of this awe-inspiring country comes from looking closely at its cultural achievements. The 24 lectures of Understanding Russia: A Cultural History survey hundreds of years of Russian culture, from the world of Ivan the Terrible to the dawn of the Soviet Union to the post-war tensions of Putin’s Russia.

Revisado: 04-09-22
Interesting social overview of Russian and Soviet life. A good read for those of us with limited non-propagandistic knowledge.
The narrative showed some, in my opinion, unnecessary and confusing repetition. Otherwise, an enthusiastic rendition of something all Westerners should better understand and well worth the time and money.

Engrossing with numerous technical inconsistencies
Revisado: 05-31-21
Although I have no military experience or training, it seems so many obvious miscalculations we made in defense against Variants, I cannot believe technical advice was sought or taken. Further, the premise of the world-wide spread of the virus in less than a week is tough to fathom. All that said, IMHO, the book is well written and Pinchot does a strong work in delivering the prose. All tolled, the listening experience was good and I will go on to books 4, 5 and 6.
