Historia
We all want the power and motivation to create change in our lives. But how to get that in a stumbling dance of one step forward and two steps back? Negative emotions run rampant in many people's lives today; a reality that feels like a shrink wrap of suffering. Popular fallback solutions of performance-based goals and tools focus on extrinsic rewards like fame, wealth, or winning. But overuse of those rewards doesn't work for the long term and in fact weakens our confidence and motivation over time, leaving us vulnerable to failure and shame.

What a disappointment
Revisado: 10-02-24
I heard the author on a podcast and couldn't wait until I read the book. Not a lot of concrete advice on how to reverse the impact of constantly feeling like a failure. She may as well have said, "Don't give up." That's about sums up the message of this book. I got more out of the podcast. The science is interesting so I thought there would be more practical advice.

Historia
As a young kid growing up in a farm town, Ross Mathews might as well have wished for a pet unicorn or a calorie-free cookie tree to grow in his front yard. Either of those far-fetched fantasies would have been more likely to come true than his real dream: working in television in Hollywood, California. Seriously, that stuff just doesn't happen to people like Ross. But guess what. It totally did.

Laughed Out Loud
Revisado: 09-16-13
This book is hysterically funny and Ross' delivery made it that much more enjoyable. If you bought the book in Kindle or paper format you missed out. You really get Ross' humor as he recounts his life story.

Historia
Fred Stoller has played the annoying schnook in just about every sitcom you’ve seen on TV - Friends, Everybody Loves Raymond, Scrubs, Hannah Montana, My Name Is Earl - and was even a staff writer for Seinfeld, but he’s never found a solid gig. When it comes to Hollywood, it’s a case of always the bridesmaid and never the bride, except in his case he’s always the snarky waiter, the mopey cousin, or Man Number Two.

Funny Look at the Reality of Life as an Actor
Revisado: 06-25-13
I thoroughly enjoyed Fred Stoller's account of his journey through tvland. I just wished he'd read the book himself. Fred's own voice would have enhanced the listening experience. The qualities he brings to his guest roles and voiceover characters would have enhanced the telling of his personal stories.

Historia
Norman Vincent Peale’s The Power of Positive Thinking, a classic best seller, has inspired an optimistic perspective for millions of Americans. Now, in an inspirational and entertaining rebuttal, the legendary basketball coach Bob Knight explains why "negative thinking" will actually produce more positive results, in sports and in daily life. Coach Knight, the second-winningest coach in NCAA history with 902 victories, explains that victory is often attained by the team that makes the fewest mistakes. His coaching philosophy was to instill discipline by "preparing to win" rather than hoping to win.

Just as Trite as Positive Thinking
Revisado: 03-16-13
What would have made The Power of Negative Thinking better?
Depth. Real insight. Any MSNBC or FOX news commentator could have patched this book together in an afternoon.
Would you ever listen to anything by Bob Knight and Bob Hammel again?
No.
What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?
The performance was fine. The book was a waste.
