barely more than a short story.

I had to stop listening, to this. the narration is terrible, with a lilting loud to silent like some strange wind-up person. making it incredibly hard to hear over the road noise in a car.

And in the story, barely ONE thing happens. it's a glorified short story. Most of it consists of a spaceman having a whinge.

When the book finished, I was somewhat incredulous. That's it? that's the story? how did this end up in my recommendations. go read a REAL space opera, like a Fire Upon the Deep.

This was quite a let down.

I enjoyed the story. but if you can't do a Spanish accent. for the love of god, don't do a Spanish accent. we can imagine. we can't un-imagine what you're up to. lol

Great worldbuilding, let down by lazy storytelling

I enjoyed aspects of this story. But after about half way, I couldn't take the cascade of stupidity, that exists purely for narrative reasons.
A street smart cop, who has a semi sentient security device, just ambles into a mysterious alien spacecraft.
An alien that hangs out for 10 years eating her mates. Because that very subtle. While phoning home would "be too obvious". And impossible, but a sentient pig just did it in 5mins. I can takeover anything wirelessly, but wow, didn't have the right cable.

The future society without weapons, but they sure do love some torture!
Characters ignoring obvious solutions again for narrative reasons. 4 vs 10,000 oh noes! what could we possibly do? What trouble we are in!

A silly book. Read with silly accents. Could not complete.

I like the carnivore spaceships, they're kinda cool. but it took me two goes to get through this. I remember exactly when I went "oh FFS". When the medic knocks on the captain's door cause he can't get to sleep without a cuddle.
So a lot of the writing is about that lofty..

Don't narrate the weird story first up

Amy Landon narrated a number of stories. And it just so happened, the next book I tried to listen to.
But she also narrated the retarded digimons in one of the first stories. And try as she might, her voice is very very similar. It was not great experience.
I would place a story like that, at the back of the book.

really delivered. once again Steven Pacey knocks it out of the park. and when I thought it was over. well, it wasn't over. tremendous. I thankyou Joe and Steven. one of the best audio experiences I've had.

Joe Abercrombie writes an amazing book. and Steven Pacey hits it out of the park, on the reading. These are the most pleasurable listening experiences I have had. top work everyone.

some truly alien humans

I love a good sci fi. especially one with cool aliens. This has some really neat concepts of genetically engineered humans, the puppets especially, which are truly crazy. enjoyed it.
