I really wasn't expecting to like this book. I'm a hardcore Scarlett Johansson fan, but I do go for anything Black Widow, so after staring at it for a while, I decided to give Forever Red a listen. It felt surprisingly like Black Widow, to the point I forgot I wasn't watching a movie or TV show. Occasionally, the narrative did feel a bit out of character, but I was too absorbed in the story that it really didn't bother me. The story was well done, and although I'll take the plot points as an AU or something, I'm really glad I bought it and will probably listen to it again.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Absolutely! This is a fabulous read on a time in American history that isn't much talked about, and from a perspective that's often forgotten.

Who was your favorite character and why?

How do you pick just one? Skeeter was the one I identified with in the book, but everyone was so distinct and well done.

What does the narrators bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

The accents are the only way to read this book. Given that most of my reasoning behind deciding to read it was that I wanted to watch the movie because Emma Stone was in it, I didn't expect to get such a quality experience. I don't think reading it myself would have kept my interest nearly as much as listening to it.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

The ending made me cry. It hardly resolved like readers want their books to. There's no happily-ever-after for these characters, not really, and their fight for equality was just beginning.

Any additional comments?

It surprised me how hard the "white ladies" had it, bullied and completely guided by society and the social mores. It felt like something from the 1800s and, being so wide-read in that time period, it was a very easy read for me. This is going to be a classic piece of literature, as much as Emma or Huck Finn or anything written hundreds of years ago.

Not nearly as good as Hamlet

I picked this piece up because it was by the same authors who wrote Hamlet, which won book of the year 2014. Not because it was any less well done, nor anything to do with Alan Cummings brilliant performance, it just failed to get me really interested. Macbeth is just a much darker, creepier story than Hamlet and I personally couldn't get into it.

So confusing!

This story was ridiculously confusing. It was one of those that go back and rewrite themselves at the very end to change history, similar to Journey to the Centre of the TARDIS in season 7. You have a whole story developed, then that one thing that "changes the course of history" goes back and erases everything and nobody remembers or it never happened. I had no idea what was going on most of the time, and then at that crucial moment, I almost lost it. It was very odd, and I'm not sure if it fits with the Doctor Who canon laws of time and all that.
Nick Briggs, however was absolutely fantastic, as always, and he's one of the only reasons I stuck through to the end. I wished there had been more Amy and Rory as well, there's very little of them in this story at all.

I came at this novel having watched and rewatched the Masterpiece Theater version with Billie Piper, Matt Smith, JJ Feild, and Hayley Atwell. I didn't even realize it had been a book first, but when I found it, I knew I had to read it. I'm a mystery and period drama fan and the Sally Lockheart mysteries combine the best of both worlds. I was pleasantly surprised to find how accurately the movie is based on the book as well.

Anton Lesser's a great narrator, very distinct, realistic voices that not only distinguish one character from another but also describe their personality so well. I started off with just this first one to see if I liked it, but I will definitely go back now and pick up the rest of the series.

What is the obsession of the Doctor Who novels with horrible mutant bugs as the alien monster? I'm pretty sure this is the fourth or fifth novel I bought that has them. I suppose they're relateable. Definitely creepy. I almost set it aside when sedan-sized mosquitoes flew in. But I stuck it out and was pleased that I did. Overall it's a really good story with strong character arcs, which is the important part for me. Neve McIntosh is a brilliant narrator as well, I'll be looking for more books narrated by her.

It's been a little while since I've listened to this, but this book was my first exposure to James Bond. It was nice, I've listened to several others since then and I really enjoy them.

Dan Stevens' performance was top-notch, I would totally listen to him over and over again.

I actually fell asleep listening to this and missed most of the middle so I don't feel like I really knew what was going on. But even just catching the end, I could fill in what I missed pretty easily. It's a very brief book with not much story going on. I wish I could say more for Samuel Anderson's performance as well, but as much as I really loved him as Danny Pink, he's not a narrator. He didn't even attempt to give the different characters different voices (much less the Doctor's signature Scottish accent). It was cheap, so not much loss, but if I did it again, I'd skip over this piece.

What can I say about this book that hasn't already been said? This is basically my new favorite book. As an English major, I studied Shakespeare extensively in college and got out a bit sick of it. I'm at the point where I can appreciate it again, but none of my studies covered Hamlet this deeply, and it's an interpretation. I feel like I understand the characters and their motives and personalities so much better now, their reasonings for the things that they did. Instead of reading just the play and feeling like every single character was a complete nutter, I can now understand the motivations for everything that they all individually did. Yorick is done especially well, and his part in the story was so well executed.

Would I like it as much just reading it as much as I enjoyed listening to Richard Armitage's narration? I highly doubt it. I've always loved just listening to his voice (seriously, I'd listen to him read the phone book), but he gives each character such life with his accents and voices that I actually forgot I wasn't hearing a full cast.

tl;dr: Get this book if you can in any format, but even if you've already read it hard copy, Armitage's performance makes it a million times better. There is a very good reason this won audiobook of 2014.

I've listened to a few James Bond now and this one was not a favorite. It took me a while to figure out what was going on, and probably sixty percent of the story was just the girl's history and James Bond wasn't even in it. I actually fell asleep at the end and don't even know how it finished. It didn't connect real well with the other ones I'd read and just felt like a one-off.

Rosamund Pike wasn't difficult to listen to, though. She was probably the one redeeming quality of this book.
