Historia
For decades we've been told that positive thinking is the key to a happy, rich life. "F*ck positivity," Mark Manson says. "Let's be honest, shit is f*cked, and we have to live with it." In his wildly popular Internet blog, Manson doesn't sugarcoat or equivocate. He tells it like it is - a dose of raw, refreshing, honest truth that is sorely lacking today. The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck is his antidote to the coddling, let's-all-feel-good mind-set that has infected modern society and spoiled a generation, rewarding them with gold medals just for showing up.

Tries and Fails
Revisado: 08-16-17
There is a recent trend in self-help literature that I have noticed over the past few years. That is self help posing as anti-self help. Books like these predictably start off criticizing traditional self help. The authors intent is to get you in a pessimistic state of mind towards established concepts.
They play on our pessimistic sides stroking our egos making us feel as though we share some secret truth the rest of the idiots just don't get. Once the author has primed us, we are more likely to be receptive to his ideas. I have seen this before.
I think this new wave of anti-self help is mostly clever marketing geared towards millennials. There is nothing here that hasn't been repeated by those who came before. The only difference is it's presented as punchy. And that's the thing. The real art is not in the words of this book but in how you're led to think there is something amazing here.
That being said, I am not dismissing the ideas outright. Some people may actually relate to the ideas in a profound way. For them that's fantastic. I am just not sure I am one of them.
Another thing that I agree with others here have pointed out. The author is in his early thirties, and not much younger than me. It's a little hard for me to take seriously his ideas. I am not sure he has perspective to give his work depth and credibility of someone who has suffered for his art. Where is the years of discipline, the constant up's and down's, failures and disappointments leading up to a breakthrough? And it's not so much that I want people to suffer but for someone who writes with such authority, I want a little more substance.

Historia
Centuries ago, Spanish conquistadors searching for gold and new lands encountered a group of independent city-states in Mesoamerica. Sophisticated beyond the Spaniards' wildest imaginings, these people were the Aztecs, the Maya, and related cultures that shared common traditions of religion, government, the arts, engineering, and trade. In many ways more advanced than European nations, these societies equaled the world's greatest civilizations of their time.

A plethora of history!
Revisado: 05-30-17
This is a dense book. The author covers thousands of years of history and culture yet somehow he makes it coherent to his listener. I definitely recommend looking online at some of his references. It helps clarify his talking points. I also suggest listening more than one time. There is so much to take in.

The first two were excellent but this takes it to a whole new level. Not only was the story well written, but l couldn't stop laughing at a few parts. Also most of the loose ends were tied up with some exceptions. I imagine we'll find out in book four.

Historia
We were fighting on the wrong side of a war we couldn't win. And that was the good news. The Ruhar hit us on Columbus Day. There we were, innocently drifting along the cosmos on our little blue marble, like the native Americans in 1492. Over the horizon come ships of a technologically advanced, aggressive culture, and BAM! There go the good old days, when humans only got killed by each other. So, Columbus Day. It fits. When the morning sky twinkled again, this time with Kristang starships jumping in to hammer the Ruhar, we thought we were saved.

Widely used in classes, as well as sold to people operating successfully in the business world, the eagerly awaited revision of Influence reminds the listener of the power of persuasion. Cialdini organizes compliance techniques into six categories based on psychological principles that direct human behavior: reciprocation, consistency, social proof, liking, authority, and scarcity.

My World Illuminated!
Revisado: 07-24-16
Have you ever found yourself in a situation where things that have been getting underneath your radar most of your life suddenly light up? That's how much this book has affected me. I can't say how it happened but, after having listening, it didn't take long before I noticed the way people communicate and persuade others in the world. I also began to notice people using these principles on me. I even noticed myself using it on others!
Imagine someone's speaking to you. You sense there is something they want, and as they talk to you, you figure out how they are trying to persuade you. Are they doing it consciously or unconsciously? Maybe a bit of both.
Like Neo in the Matrix, everything slows down. Instead of being influenced unconsciously like you may have in the past, you start to see ways to dodge their bullets. In fact you can even silently pick out the bullets they're using. Communication now becomes la lot more interesting.
But why stop there? Not only have I gotten better at avoiding influences, I have also improved at influencing others. Not that I have any intentions to become an evil genius, but after reading this book, I am definitely a little more nimble.
Fortunately there aren't any exercises you have to commit to. You don't have to reread this book to understand this information because you probably already know this from living in the real world. Just having it pointed out the way Rober Cialdini does makes it a lot more clear. However I would definitely reread this book as I have probably overlooked some of it's value.
One last thing. It can be a little academic and dry, but don't let that turn you away. It's a refreshing alternative to most self help fluff.

The children under Miss West's care understand all too well. And each of them is seeking a way back to their own fantasy world.

If you could sum up Every Heart a Doorway in three words, what would they be?
Misfits Boarding School

Jack was my favorite because she was clever, beautiful and interesting. Kade was a close second. He seemed like the kind of friend you would want to have in a place like that.
What about Cynthia Hopkins’s performance did you like?
She made the characters seem so real. It made me feel like I was in the story.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
The back-story about how Nanci's hair and the ending were my favorites without spoiling it, but there were several
Any additional comments?
I definitely recommend this book. It will make you feel sad and longing but in a good way.

What would have made Spirited better?
I am sorry. I can't stand listening to someone chat on and on about themselves for too long. Get to the point already.
What could Rebecca Rosen and Samantha Rose have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?
Cut out more of the sentimental feel good fluff, enough with the convince me it's real gab, and enough talking about herself. I thought I was buying a book for me, not for an autobiography. I don't know why authors of this kind of material have to spend a quarter of the book building up the premise saying, "I know what you're thinking" I didn't believe it either. Seriously. Now days it's not weird or strange as it once was to talk about this stuff. So stop wasting my time trying to convince me.
What didn’t you like about Rebecca Rosen’s performance?
The ingratiating, goody goody tone.
What character would you cut from Spirited?
The whole book

Best vampire book ever!
Revisado: 11-23-15
This story was recommended to me by one of the audible staff. And what a fabulous recommendation it was! This is the best vampire story I've ever heard. I absolutely loved the characters in this book especially Cat. She kicks ass and flaunts authority at the same time she's insecure and makes lots of mistakes. Bones is a sexy witty bad boy, with also sense of tenderness.. He's the hottest vampire you would ever want to meet or be bitten by. Unlike other stories, there is not a lot that whiney stuff. Cat is no pushover and definitely not in need of rescuing. If anything she has to be heldback. Read this book and get Twilight out of your system for good.

Historia
Six days ago, astronaut Mark Watney became one of the first people to walk on Mars. Now, he's sure he'll be the first person to die there. After a dust storm nearly kills him and forces his crew to evacuate while thinking him dead, Mark finds himself stranded and completely alone with no way to even signal Earth that he's alive - and even if he could get word out, his supplies would be gone long before a rescue could arrive. Chances are, though, he won't have time to starve to death. The damaged machinery, unforgiving environment, or plainold "human error" are much more likely to kill him first.
