The latest book in the Blooms, Bones and Stones series by Olivia Swift entitled The Secret of the Stones is once again more focused on romance than mystery. The primary characters here are Ben, who has recently purchased a property and is building a home with sample garden and landscaping on the grounds and Katerina, who is an employee of Carly's jewelry shop. As part of the landscaping project, Ben has purchased a load of stones that are from an old building site. Part of the stones in the load have some mysterious properties and are being sought out by several people.

Because this book, like the rest of the series, focuses on its own couple, it is easily read as a stand alone or as part of the series. The characters have been well thought out and developed with just enough reference and involvement of the other couples in the series. As far as the mysterious properties of the stones, the author has included information about archeology and ways to determine the origination of the stones. The inclusion of occult worshiping regarding the stones did lend more of a mystery feel to this book than the earlier stories in this series.

The narrator in this particular book did a good job with the pace and voice creation within this audiobook.

As with the other books in Olivia Swift's Blooms, Bones and Stones series, The Secret of the Pendant is more focused on the romance of the primary couple than the mystery although this book does have more of a mystery feel than the earlier books. The reader was introduced to Corby and Carlo in book four of the series and book five is their story. As the story begins, Corby receives a letter from an attorney and when she follows up discovers that she has inherited a house, some money and a pendant from her great uncle that she has not seen since she was a child.

Carlo offers to help Corby when she goes to see the property and when they arrive, they discover a neighbor inside the house. The neighbor states that he took care of the property for Corby's uncle after the uncle moved to a different town. As Corby and Carlo explore the house, they discover that someone has been digging holes in the basement. This discovery make Corby uncomfortable and they decide to come back the next day and change the locks.

I found this book to be better than the previous ones in the series due to the increased mystery focus but also because the narrator for this one spoke at a considerably better pace and did a better job of create distinguishably different voices for the characters. I also felt that the character development and integration of them within the story had better flow. It was also interesting how the author incorporated the main characters individual family backgrounds and history within the book.

The Secret of the Quilt is Olivia Swift's third book in the Blooms, Bones and Stones series. As with the earlier books in the series, this book has more of a romance feel than that of a mystery. As a point of fact, the focal point in this case is more of a puzzle than a true mystery as it revolves around a quilt that contains a secret message. Once the main couple, Rob Manners and Kim Summers, in this story solve the puzzle, they find out who the current descendant of the original owner's of the quilt is and get the story behind the quilt from her.

The author does a good job of character development and detailing the process that the couple and their friends use to decode the message and find the descendant but there was more focus on the changing relationship of the couple which went from longtime best friends to a budding romance. Unfortunately, the narration on this book was a bit too fast to understand and follow the story and there was very little change of voice between speaking characters.

Almost Picture Perfect is the third book in Olivia Swift's Blooms, Bones and Stones Cozy Mystery Series. Although this is billed as a series, the books can be read as stand alone novels as each focuses on a different romantic couple facing their own unique mystery. This book is more focused on the romance of Jules Callendar and Miller Hollenbeck than a true mystery. The book opens with the couple meeting for the first time and moves quickly through Jules taking photographs of Miller's upcycle projects while encouraging her to start offering her completed items for sale to the public. The mystery comes in only after one of Jules' photographs of Miller is displayed at a local gallery that subsequently creates friction with Jules' mother and inspires jealousy in a female acquaintance of Jules.

Although the author does a good job of character and plotline development, I would like to see more focus on the actual investigation as it appeared to be more of an afterthought that was designed to just cause a speed bump in the road of love for these characters. Unfortunately, the narration was inconsistent in pace and character voices and several times I found myself getting distracted and losing focus as a result.

Black Jade by Gloria Oliver is the first in the Daiyu Wu Mystery Series. Set in Dallas in 1930, Texas, this book revolves around the life of Daiyu Wu, a blind Chinese immigrant who works for her family's laundry service and her foster brother Jacques Haskins. As a result of her blindness, Daiyu's other senses are elevated and when a gown is left for cleaning that has a distinctive odor of burnt garlic, she quickly realizes that it has possibly been utilized to commit murder but she and Jacques need to figure out not only who committed the crime but also who the victim was.

The author does an excellent job of detailing the inherent prejudices against persons of Oriental descent in the United States during the 1930s as well as providing information related to application of arsenic poisoning. However, I found that in places this book dragged on with repetitive information related to various character situations during the course of the story; however, the overall character development was exceptional as the reader is able to know their inner feelings and circumstances.

The narrator was good as far as creation of different voices for the characters but at times appeared to stumble and pause longer than necessary for chapter changes. I look forward to seeing how this series develops and the relationships grow in the future.
