Historia
For Your Own Good, the contemporary classic exploring the serious if not gravely dangerous consequences parental cruelty can bring to bear on children everywhere, is one of the central works by Alice Miller, the celebrated Swiss psychoanalyst. With her typically lucid, strong, and poetic language, Miller investigates the personal stories and case histories of various self-destructive and/or violent individuals to expand on her theories about the long-term effects of abusive child-rearing.

Dark and Depressing Walk Through Pedagogy
Revisado: 08-09-23
I can't tell where she is criticizing and where she is advocating for manipulation and abuse. Confusing, triggering, dark. I enjoyed her book on the gifted child more, though it had some of this. This book is full of gut wrenching ideas and religious dogma and it is not clear if she is saying this is good or bad much of the time, but it definitely feels very bad in my body. Hate stirring. Do not recommend for general consumption. She seems completely obsessed with punishment and how to do it better? This book has made me very sad for humanity. It is not helpful or hopeful, and just goes on and on about how to punish children into being good punishers of themselves? This book has turned my perception of pedagogy very dark and left me feeling very grateful for all the neglect I was gifted in my childhood. I was labeled gifted and still feel punished for it most days...as agonizing is it is to feel freewilled in our modern domesticated society, I am very grateful to be me. ...is she actually saying we should use corpses to teach children about human sexuality?!? HOW is this woman considered an expert? I guess if breaking wills and propagating shame and abuse is your thing... She does this with an air of shame and blame towards those who shame and blame which I don't quite understand. I do find the argument that poisonous pedagody might create characters like Hitler to be sound and easy to follow, though not a knew idea for me.

An intense conversation, a spat with a partner, or even an obnoxious tweet - these situations aren't life-or-death, yet we often react as if they are. That's because our bodies treat most perceived threats the same way. Yet one approach has proven to be incredibly effective in training our nervous system to stop overreacting: polyvagal theory. In Anchored, expert teacher Deb Dana shares a down-to-earth presentation of polyvagal theory, then brings the science to life with practical, everyday ways to transform your relationship with your body.

This was one of dozens of books I listened to more than once on my healing journey. It was less triggering and more useful and soothing than many.

If god was a white dude in the sky this would be your ticket in
Revisado: 05-27-23
I live M. Singer’s energy, vibe, and conclusions….However, I found this absurdly thick with ‘must’s ‘have to’s and ‘should’s. I could only get into it as a letter to himself. Ugh to bible quotes at the end. Lots of privileged white guy energy but still some nuggets of wisdom if I put a lot of space around his perspective being very different from mine.

Valuable to all relationships
Revisado: 05-09-23
Although this is written aimed at therapists, I think it would be helpful to many couples, and I found it helpful as an individual. I plan to add this to my reference section and utilize the sentence stems--I have come to many of the same conclusions on my own, so it was nice to have it 'spelled out' so specifically. I believe listening to this book has improved my relationship to myself and my relationship to relationship. Definitely worth the time to listen (which I did during my morning walks on 1.5x for a couple weeks).

Historia
In these poems, the joys and struggles of the everyday are played against the grinding politics of being human. Beginning in a hotel room in the dark of a distant city, we travel through history and follow the memory of the Trail of Tears from the bend in the Tallapoosa River to a place near the Arkansas River. Stomp dance songs, blues, and jazz ballads echo throughout. Lost ancestors are recalled. Resilient songs are born, even as they grieve the loss of their country. Joy Harjo is at the top of her form in Conflict Resolution for Holy Beings.

I wanted to like it but found it very triggering
Revisado: 04-27-23
Lovely voice, narrow perspective. I found the organization, or lack of, confusing, as the 6 steps are sprinkled through. Understanding it is written post course helped me make a bit more sense of it.. This seems to be written for people wanting to evolve beyond religious dogma and trying to find a sense of self...which the author calls soul. I found the idea of making 'soul pleaser' a proprietary idea rather offensive, and overall came away dissapointed by the lack of follow through on what started off as decent ideas. Yes, love yourself. Also, realize that there are many--infinite variations on how to do this.

Historia
Many famed music producers are known for a particular sound that has its day. Rick Rubin is known for something else: creating a space where artists of all different genres and traditions can home in on who they really are and what they really offer. He has made a practice of helping people transcend their self-imposed expectations in order to reconnect with a state of innocence from which the surprising becomes inevitable. Over the years, he has learned that being an artist isn’t about your specific output, it’s about your relationship to the world.
