The Audacity to Be You: Learning to Love Your Horrible, Rotten, Self is a simple but bold exploration into what makes us human and why happiness and connection are elusive for so many. Reedy's work is counterintuitive, but the listener will often have the experience of being found and understood as they make their way through his work.

I resent this book from its title to its very end. Therapy for life? Therapy forever? What’s in it for us? Those who can afford therapy vs. those who don’t? I do not have a horrible rotten soul.

In The Case for Trump, award-winning historian and political commentator Victor Davis Hanson explains how a celebrity businessman with no political or military experience triumphed over 16 well-qualified Republican rivals, a Democrat with a quarter-billion-dollar war chest, and a hostile media and Washington establishment to become president of the US—and an extremely successful president.

Historia
When we seek an example of great leaders with unalloyed courage, the person who comes to mind is Winston Churchill: the iconic, visionary war leader immune from the consensus of the day, who stood firmly for his beliefs when everyone doubted him. But how did young Winston become Churchill? What gave him the strength to take on the superior force of Nazi Germany when bombs rained on London and so many others had caved? In this landmark biography of Winston Churchill based on extensive new material, the true genius of the man, statesman, and leader can finally be fully understood.

The greatest book I’ve listened to!
Revisado: 07-16-24
I subscribe to Audible to keep up with new ideas in and to refresh and complete my education. I come from a part of the world that was plagued by the decisions of the Yalta Accord and Winston Churchill has a controversial legacy in Eastern Europe, but this biography redeems him and restores him to his well deserved greatness and gives the sacrifice of the Eastern European nations a sense of purpose in the struggle to preserve the Western civilization.

Historia
Andrew Roberts' Napoleon is the first one-volume biography to take advantage of the recent publication of Napoleon's thirty-three thousand letters, which radically transform our understanding of his character and motivation. At last we see him as he was: protean multitasker, decisive, surprisingly willing to forgive his enemies and his errant wife Josephine.

I consider it the ultimate history on Napoleon and the institutions that shaped modern Europe. It explains the roots of geopolitics and (sadly) the Russian claims on Poland, Moldavia and Walachia.

Historia

Timely & Insightful
Revisado: 11-05-23
Ten years ago I’ve returned to Romania with a business contract after almost 20 years spent in the USA, years in which I didn’t have luxury of following Romania‘s politics or current affairs. In order to bring me up to speed, my late mother provided me with some relevant writings among which Lucian Boia’s “De ce este România altfel?”/“Why is Romania different?”. I was displeased by the lecture and almost offended. I must admit that discovering it on Audible and relistening to it, after living as an expat in my native country for 10 years, that I find it accurate, insightful and honest.

I am passionate about history and I thought I knew the history of my people, though I find refreshing this outsider’s point of view and interpretations different from the commonly accepted or vehiculated point of view. A must read. I would recommend it as reference to any of my friends interested in my background and my story.

Historia
In 2007, a short blogpost by Gawker Media outed PayPal founder and billionaire investor Peter Thiel as gay. Thiel's sexuality had been known to close friends and family, but he didn't consider himself a public figure, and believed the information was private. This post would be the casus belli for a meticulously plotted conspiracy that would end nearly a decade later with a $140 million dollar judgment against Gawker and its bankruptcy. Only later would the world learn that Gawker's demise was not incidental - it had been masterminded by Thiel.

Excessive display of erudition

Excessive display of erudition, remote reference, verbose. Ambivalent on all issues, but on Trump’s ascendency and support. Definitely a set back on my regard to the author.

Historia
The most translated book in the world after the Bible, the Tao Te Ching, or “Book of the Tao,” is a guide to cultivating a life of peace, serenity, and compassion. Through aphorisms and parable, it leads readers toward the Tao, or the “Way”: harmony with the life force of the universe. Traditionally attributed to Lao-tzu, a Chinese philosopher thought to have been a contemporary of Confucius, it is the essential text of Taoism, one of the three major religions of ancient China.

The introductory study is exceptional in itself. I’ve read many translations, in several languages over the past 40 yrs, but none touched me as this one. Glad to have discovered it, at last!

Henry Kissinger analyses the lives of six extraordinary leaders—Konrad Adenauer, Charles de Gaulle, Richard Nixon, Anwar Sadat, Lee Kuan Yew, and Margaret Thatcher—through the distinctive strategies of statecraft that he believes they embodied. To each of these studies, Kissinger brings historical perception, public experience and, because he knew each of the subjects and participated in many of the events he describes, personal knowledge.

Exceptionally insightful this book explains the link between principles and action, between values and implementation or reaching the goal within one’s moral moral parameters. I hope it’s not lost to those who were not contemporary with the events, or if they were, it gives them the incentive to learn about them. An intellectual delight.

Historia
It is difficult to find another soldier's story to equal Captain Darrell Watt's in terms of time spent on the field of battle and challenges faced. Even by the lofty standards of the SAS and Special Forces, one has to look far to find anyone who can match his record of resilience and valor in the face of such daunting odds and with resources so paltry. In the fight, he showed himself to be a military maestro. After 12 years in the cauldron of war, his cause slipped from beneath him, and Rhodesia gave way to Zimbabwe.

An unexpected insight
Revisado: 03-06-22
I grew up during the liberation of former colonies, in a communist country supportive to the new independent countries of Africa.
I cannot help making a comparison between the faith of the European settlers in Africa and the claim of Albanians to Kosovo two decades later. There is no rhyme, no reason to international affairs: in one case a population was disenfranchised based on race, on another the claim of majority made another people ( the Serbs) lose the cradle of their civilization.
