Historia
In his wickedly brilliant first novel, Debut Dagger Award winner Alan Bradley introduces one of the most singular and engaging heroines in recent fiction: Eleven-year-old Flavia de Luce, an aspiring chemist with a passion for poison. It is the summer of 1950 - and a series of inexplicable events has struck Buckshaw, the decaying English mansion that Flavia’s family calls home. A dead bird is found on the doorstep, a postage stamp bizarrely pinned to its beak. Hours later, Flavia finds a man lying in the cucumber patch and watches him as he takes his dying breath.

characters were never developed, connected for me
Revisado: 08-21-24
the story line itself was entertaining. but the characters didn't really have any kind of evolution and showed only one emotion each the entire book. I didn't feel connected to any of them.

enjoy the characters
Revisado: 04-15-24
I like that the characters don't have to be clueless to advance the plot. tana French can tell a story about things going sideways even when each individual character was acting true to themselves, and often with good intentions and insight to what others were planning. so often a mystery requires half the characters to be oblivious which always irks me.

Historia
The Catenan Republic—the Hierarchy—may rule the world now, but they do not know everything. I tell them my name is Vis Telimus. I tell them I was orphaned after a tragic accident three years ago, and that good fortune alone has led to my acceptance into their most prestigious school. I tell them that once I graduate, I will gladly join the rest of civilized society in allowing my strength, my drive, and my focus—what they call Will—to be leeched away and added to the power of those above me, as millions already do. As all must eventually do.

Historia
Charlie Reade looks like a regular high school kid, great at baseball and football, a decent student. But he carries a heavy load. His mom was killed in a horrific accident when he was seven, and grief drove his dad to drink. Charlie learned how to take care of himself—and his dad. When Charlie is seventeen, he meets a dog named Radar and her aging master, Howard Bowditch, a recluse in a big house at the top of a big hill, with a locked shed in the backyard. Sometimes strange sounds emerge from that shed.

inconsistent pace, great characters
Revisado: 06-20-23
without revealing anything, the story seemed to be a bit slow for some time at the start. then almost too fast at the end. but the characters were likeable even though imperfect. and I enjoyed the story. reader was good, read with emotion without being over the top.

great works building... flat characters
Revisado: 05-23-23
I wanted to like this book because I love world building and the author does that well. interesting how the geography has been a natural boundary and how different peoples interact. but there are a LOT of characters that ad little to the story. but all those quick back stories add up without progressing the story.. and the main characters are not very likable. some people are probably good with that but I can't get into a book where I don't care if the main characters survive. I listened to all 33 hours but I'm not going to continue the series.

the story held my attention but I really enjoyed the characters. they covered a range of sexuality without it being the main focus. the characters you were supposed to like were emotionally intelligent and funny. an interesting mix of real world and fantasy.

really relatable and funny once past vulgarity
Revisado: 01-23-22
I know it won't be everyone's cup of tea. there is plenty of bad language and sex talk. but if you're able to handle that much the awkwardness, sarcasm, and genuine emotions of the main character felt very relatable to me (middle aged straight suburban mom). and the over the top ridiculous situations were hilarious for anyone whose read a lot of fantasy. the narrator was great.
