One of the better Goosebumps stories, but…
Revisado: 04-06-25
The narrator is abysmal. Between the voices, her pronunciation and cadence, I really hope she doesn’t bring her lack of talent to any more of these.

On how textbook the chapter on the Ramsays is, and how even the most seasoned investigators can let their biases blind them to facts. Absolutely embarrassing for the author.

Historia
The year is 1348. Thomas, a disgraced knight, has found a young girl alone in a dead Norman village. An orphan of the Black Death, and an almost unnerving picture of innocence, she tells Thomas that plague is only part of a larger cataclysm - that the fallen angels under Lucifer are rising in a second war on heaven, and that the world of men has fallen behind the lines of conflict. Is it delirium or is it faith? She believes she has seen the angels of God. She believes the righteous dead speak to her in dreams. And now she has convinced the faithless Thomas to shepherd her across a depraved landscape to Avignon.

Historia
Edgar Allan Poe (1809-1849) changed residences about once a year throughout his life. Driven by a desire for literary success and the pressures of supporting his family, Poe sought work in American magazines, living in the cities that produced them. Scott Peeples chronicles Poe's rootless life in the cities, neighborhoods, and rooms where he lived and worked, exploring how each new place left its enduring mark on the writer and his craft.

Historia
Seven-year-old Wen and her parents, Eric and Andrew, are vacationing at a remote cabin on a quiet New Hampshire lake. Their closest neighbors are more than two miles in either direction along a rutted dirt road. One afternoon, as Wen catches grasshoppers in the front yard, a stranger unexpectedly appears in the driveway. Leonard is the largest man Wen has ever seen, but he is young, friendly, and he wins her over almost instantly. Leonard and Wen talk and play until Leonard abruptly apologizes and tells Wen, “None of what’s going to happen is your fault.”

Horrifically bad novel, with the single worst audiobook performance I have ever listened to
Revisado: 02-04-23
When I started reading horror as a young, closeted gay kid, I wished that one day LGBTQ characters could be represented in mainstream horror fiction, in the books I liked to read. If those books were like this, though, I’d rather them not be written, I’d honestly never say a straight man can’t write a gay man as a character, but in this case, it could not have missed the mark more. This is predictable, boring and overly long. There is nothing here but pointless violence and torture porn. The narrator on this was distractingly bad, doing ridiculous voices for the male characters that sounded more like Nelson on “The Simpsons” than anything else.

In this new recording, Paapa Essiedu breathes new life into the classic tale. Robert Louis Stevenson's dark psychological fantasy follows a respectable London lawyer as he investigates the strange relationship between his old friend Dr Henry Jekyll and the evil Edward Hyde. Its sensitive portrayal of man's dual nature is moving, beautiful and terrifying in equal measure.

Historia
"Marley was dead to begin with...." These chillingly familiar words begin the classic Christmas tale of remorse and redemption in A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens. Now R. William Bennett rewinds the story and focuses the spotlight on Scrooge’s miserly business partner, Jacob T. Marley, who was allowed to return as a ghost to warn Scrooge away from his ill-fated path. Why was Marley allowed to return? And why hadn’t he been given the same chance as Ebenezer Scrooge? Or had he?

A Christmas Carol is a perfect novella…
Revisado: 12-20-22
No word is wasted, no character stays longer than they need. It’s perfect, and that is the reason for its enduring spirit. This novel isn’t outright totally terrible, but it is unnecessary and not believable when compared to Dickens.

Historia
The modern audience hasn't had a chance to truly appreciate the unknowing dread that readers would have felt when reading Bram Stoker's original 1897 manuscript. Most modern productions employ campiness or sound effects to try to bring back that gothic tension, but we've tried something different. By returning to Stoker's original storytelling structure - a series of letters and journal entries voiced by Jonathan Harker, Dr. Van Helsing, and other characters - with an all-star cast of narrators, we've sought to recapture its originally intended horror and power.

This wild, lush, dark page-turner is an exciting creative leap for a major writer.
