Historia
In PALO ALTO, the first comprehensive, global history of Silicon Valley, Malcolm Harris examines how and why Northern California evolved in the particular, consequential way it did, tracing the ideologies, technologies, and policies that have been engineered there over the course of 150 years of Anglo settler colonialism, from IQ tests to the "tragedy of the commons," racial genetics, and "broken windows" theory.

This book is super insightful. I would recommend this book to everyone. Does a great job tracing California history to present day influences and precisely diagnoses many sociocultural issues today.

Historia
When Rin aced the Keju - the Empire-wide test to find the most talented youth to learn at the Academies - it was a shock to everyone: to the test officials, who couldn’t believe a war orphan from Rooster Province could pass without cheating; to Rin’s guardians, who believed they’d finally be able to marry her off and further their criminal enterprise; and to Rin herself, who realized she was finally free of the servitude and despair that had made up her daily existence. That she got into Sinegard - the most elite military school in Nikan - was even more surprising.

This has to be one of the best books I have ever read (listened to)! Could hardly stop once I started it. It’s a ride from beginning to end. Really gut wrenching in the best way. The author has incredible world building and all of the characters are interesting, complex beings. Just wow!

Historia
An urgent and fractious national debate over public monuments has erupted in America. Some people risk imprisonment to tear down long-ignored hunks of marble; others form armed patrols to defend them. Why do we care so much about statues? And who gets to decide which ones should stay up and which should come down? Erin L. Thompson, the country’s leading expert in the tangled aesthetic, legal, political, and social issues involved in such battles, brings much-needed clarity in Smashing Statues.

So interesting and insightful!

Changes the way you think about monuments and public symbols! I really enjoyed the discussion of why monuments are put up in the first place. I felt like this was a fresh perspective in a heated debate that everyone can learn from!

Historia
In Dog Whistle Politics, Ian Haney Lopez offers a sweeping account of how politicians and plutocrats deploy veiled racial appeals to persuade white voters to support policies that favor the extremely rich yet threaten their own interests. Dog-whistle appeals generate middle-class enthusiasm for political candidates who promise to crack down on crime, curb undocumented immigration, and protect the heartland against Islamic infiltration, but ultimately vote to slash taxes for the rich.

Would love to know what the author thinks about the trump era
Revisado: 07-13-21
Super interesting book with lots of insightful points. I feel like some of what he said was unfortunately disproven by Trump, such as dog whistle politics works as long as the racism isn’t explicitly pointed out, and I would love to know what the author’s thoughts are.
