They were just friends. Best friends. They spent entire summers sitting on Shiloh’s porch steps, dreaming about the future. They promised each other that, no matter what, their friendship would never change. Well, Shiloh did go to college, and Cary did join the Navy. And yet, somehow, everything changed.

Loved It
Revisado: 08-21-24
I enjoyed this one so much and found myself slowing down to make it last longer. I loved Shiloh and Cary as they were so relatable and believable. I cared about these characters and their complicated relationship, and I especially loved Cary and his tenderness towards Shiloh. The narrator is wonderful which added to the enjoyment.

This book is so well done. I loved everything about it. The narrators had great voices, the storyline moved quickly and was easy to follow. I cared about the characters and about the outcome. I loved this one.

Historia
In the frigid pre-dawn hours, in a distressed Midwestern city, hundreds of desperate unemployed folks are lined up for a spot at a job fair. Without warning, a lone driver plows through the crowd in a stolen Mercedes, running over the innocent, backing up, and charging again. Eight people are killed; fifteen are wounded. The killer escapes. Mr. Mercedes is a war between good and evil, from the master of suspense whose insight into the mind of this obsessed, insane killer is chilling and unforgettable.

A Great Narrator
Revisado: 01-13-24
I have read several Stephen King books, the non-horror ones, and I think he is a gifted and talented writer. He keeps the action coming in this one and the two main characters, Bill Hodges who is a retired detective and bad guy, Brady Hartsfield, come to life. There are also several good supporting characters: Jerome, Bill's teenage neighbor and friend, and Holly, who is in her 40s and has many personality issues. But what makes this audio book so wonderful is Will Patton; he is an excellent narrator who pulled me into the story and kept me interested. He is especially good at different characters' voices; it is just right, not overdone or jarring. I soon knew which character I was listening to just by Will's voice. This one is well worth your credit, and I want to listen to more books narrated by Will Patton.

Historia
Masterfully blending elements of psychological suspense and true crime, Jessica Knoll—bestselling author of Luckiest Girl Alive and the writer behind the Netflix adaptation starring Mila Kunis—delivers an “unflinching and evocative” (Laura Dave, New York Times bestselling author) thriller in Bright Young Women. The book opens on a Saturday night in 1978, hours before a soon-to-be-infamous murderer descends upon a Florida sorority house with deadly results. The lives of those who survive, including a sorority president and key witness, Pamela Schumacher, are forever changed.

Not That Great
Revisado: 10-02-23
This one was a miss for me, and it was overhyped. The focus of the book is on two women involved in two of the Ted Bundy murders, one in Florida and one in Washington State. Ted Bundy's name is never mentioned, and he is often called "the defendant." The book jumps around quite a bit with different times/places/people. I was not interested in the outcome but pressed on hoping it would get better, which it didn't.

In the spring of 2020, Lara’s three daughters return to the family's orchard in Northern Michigan. While picking cherries, they beg their mother to tell them the story of Peter Duke, a famous actor with whom she shared both a stage and a romance years before at a theater company called Tom Lake. As Lara recalls the past, her daughters examine their own lives and relationship with their mother, and are forced to reconsider the world and everything they thought they knew.

One to Skip
Revisado: 08-24-23
A new Ann Patchett book is always something to look forward to, but this one is just not good. I thought Meryl Streep as the narrator could save it, but she could not. The back and forth of Lara's telling her adult daughters about her roles as Emily in the play, "Our Town" combined with her present life where she lives on a cherry orchard became repetitive and boring. I pressed on just to finish it. This is one to skip.

Really Good
Revisado: 05-06-23
Dan Bittner is a great narrator as his voice moves the story along nicely. I didn't especially like Emma Galvin's voice though as I thought Ava sounded too childlike and took away from the story. The action moves quickly but it is easy to follow; I was invested in the storyline and wanted a good outcome for Jack and Matty.

I Loved Everything About This One
Revisado: 04-17-23
I listened slowly to this one as it was so good and I wanted it to last a long time. It would be great to read this in print too. The narrator is perfect, the story drew me in and stayed strong to the end. I loved everything about this one. Highly recommend.

Historia
Rife with the indulgent pleasures of life among New York’s one-percenters, Pineapple Street is a smart, escapist novel that sparkles with wit. Full of recognizable, loveable—if fallible—characters, it’s about the peculiar unknowability of someone else’s family, the miles between the haves and have-nots, and the insanity of first love—all wrapped in a story that is a sheer delight.

An Enjoyable Listen
Revisado: 03-22-23
This is a fun listen as we get to know the Stocketon family who are a rich family living in Brooklyn. The three points of view are two of the adult Stockton children, Darley and Georgiana and their sister-in-law, Sasha. The writing is well done and things move along at a good pace. There are plenty of reasons to keep listening. It is often funny, but their are real-life issues too. Marin Ireland is a treat to listen to, and I always enjoy her books.

One to Skip
Revisado: 03-11-23
I had recently listened to " Miss Benson's Beetle" and enjoyed it so much. It is a wonderfully entertaining audiobook. And I have read "The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry" which was a great book too. This one is a slow, rambling account of Queenie at a nursing home which I found uninteresting and repetitive. I did not care about any of her caregivers or the other people there. And I found it hard to go along with Queenie's relationships with Harold and his son, David. The narrator was great, but still, I would skip this one.

Revisado: 02-08-23
This is such a great audio book and well worth a credit as we go on a journey with two women in search of a golden beetle. Narrator Juliet Stevenson makes this audio so entertaining, so funny, and so good. I enjoyed my time with these women and grew to love them.
