Historia
For a quarter century, Peggy Noonan has been thinking aloud about America in her much-loved Wall Street Journal column. In this new collection of her essential recent work, Noonan demonstrates the erudition, wisdom and humor that have made her one of America’s most admired writers. She calls balls and strikes on the political shenanigans of recent leaders and she honors the integrity of great Americans, ranging from Billy Graham to the heroes of 9/11.

Historia
On November 6, 1860, Abraham Lincoln became the fluky victor in a tight race for president. The country was bitterly at odds; Southern extremists were moving ever closer to destroying the Union, with one state after another seceding and Lincoln powerless to stop them. Slavery fueled the conflict, but somehow the passions of North and South came to focus on a lonely federal fortress in Charleston Harbor: Fort Sumter.

Historia
On September 11, 1999, humanity made a monumental discovery in the vastness of space. Scientists uncovered an asteroid of immense scientific importance—a colossal celestial entity. As massive as an aircraft carrier and towering as high as the iconic Empire State Building, this cosmic titan was later named Bennu. Remarkable for much more than its size, Bennu belonged to a rare breed of asteroids capable of revealing the essence of life itself. But just as Bennu became a beacon of promise, researchers identified a grave danger.

I enjoyed listening to the author story. He tries to get a little too poetic times, but I could live with that. The space mission was absolutely fantastic.

Revisado: 03-07-24
Overly long and repetitive, few characters had any redeeming qualities. The narrator did a poor job reading female dialogue.

Historia
Few figures in American politics have seen more and said less than Mitt Romney. An outspoken dissident in Donald Trump’s GOP, he has made headlines in recent years for standing alone against the forces he believes are poisoning the party he once led. Romney was the first senator in history to vote to remove from office a president of his own party. When that president’s supporters went on to storm the US Capitol, Romney delivered a thundering speech from the Senate floor accusing his fellow Republicans of stoking insurrection.

Very informative. I like biographies that do not turn into hagiography, this book looks at Romney's good and bad points. Downside for me was too much about Trump.

Historia
When NASA sent astronauts to the moon in the 1960s and 1970s the agency excluded women from the corps, arguing that only military test pilots—made up exclusively of men—had the right stuff. It was an era in which women were steered away from jobs in science and deemed unqualified for space flight. Eventually, though, NASA recognized its blunder and opened the application process to a wider array of hopefuls, regardless of race or gender. From a candidate pool of 8,000 six elite women were selected in 1978—Sally Ride, Judy Resnik, Anna Fisher, Kathy Sullivan, Shannon Lucid, and Rhea Seddon.

Fascinating, with great narration
Revisado: 10-24-23
5 stars for me, but I'm a space nerd. For the average reader 4-4.5 stars.
Very well written, and the Audible book has a great narrator. Part biography, part inside baseball, part tragedy. With a lot of biographies I feel bad that I'm not as good as the subject, but these women are inspiring and the author doesn't go overboard with her praise. The stories about each of their first spaceflights were great. The ending chapters that discuss the Challenger disaster are sobering, insightful, and unique. The narrator really conveyed emotion, and there was a palpable sense of doom reading the lead up to the launch.

Historia
Before the cyber age, foreign interference in Western democratic politics played out in a comparatively narrow arena. The explosive expansion of cyberspace has radically altered this situation. The hacking activities of Russian military agents in the 2016 US presidential election and other major incidents demonstrate the magnitude of the contemporary problem. This is a struggle that the West is losing. Lucas Kello delves into recent history to reveal the failures of present policy in preventing and punishing cyberattacks and other forms of technological aggression.

Shouldn't even be a journal article
Revisado: 03-16-23
This could have been a journal article, albeit a not particularly good one. The book promises that "Kello develops a bold new solution: a concentrated and coordinated retaliation strategy to deter further antagonism." Nope. Lot of history on failures to respond adequately to cyber attacks. The audiobook was terrible; perhaps reading the written word would have been better, but not by much. This might be interesting to an academic, but I was disappointed.

Historia
Ulysses S. Grant's life has typically been misunderstood. All too often he is caricatured as a chronic loser and an inept businessman or as the triumphant but brutal Union general of the Civil War. But these stereotypes don't come close to capturing him, as Chernow reveals in his masterful biography, the first to provide a complete understanding of the general and president whose fortunes rose and fell with dizzying speed and frequency.

Another good Ron Chernow biography
Revisado: 05-26-22
Extremely detailed, as all Chernow biographies are. Grant is an interesting character, and there's much more to him than a famous Civil War general with a (deserved) reputation for drinking. Chernow engages in some hero worship, forgiving many of Grant's failures with some version of "it wasn't his fault" or "but he was a man of great character." His biggest failure appears to be being a terrible judge of character. He got suckered by a lot of people, and betrayed by people he thought were his friends. I was appalled by the Ponzi scheme he fell for late in his life, which is why he had to write his memoirs to support his family after he was diagnosed with throat cancer. (Mark Twain published those memoirs.)
I like Chernow's biographies, and if you are interested in the Civil War, Reconstruction, or American politics in the mid to late 1800s I recommend you read Grant.

Historia
In the summer of 1846, the Army of the West marched through Santa Fe, en route to invade and occupy the Western territories claimed by Mexico. Fueled by the new ideology of “Manifest Destiny,” this land grab would lead to a decades-long battle between the United States and the Navajos, the fiercely resistant rulers of a huge swath of mountainous desert wilderness.

Beautiful history
Revisado: 02-08-22
I listened to this audio book and was totally enthralled. Brilliant delivery by Don Leslie, but I'm sure the written work would be just as good. I loved the intertwined stories, primarily of Kit Carson and the Navajo people, but also the Mexican American War, John Fremont's discovery journeys, and so many other characters rendered in compelling prose. A beautiful history that comes alive.
