Not a bad story

Overall a good listen. The best or worst I’ve ever heard? Nah. But overall good.

Historia
It's been centuries since the robots of Panga gained self-awareness and laid down their tools; centuries since they wandered, en masse, into the wilderness, never to be seen again; centuries since they faded into myth and urban legend. One day, the life of a tea monk is upended by the arrival of a robot, there to honor the old promise of checking in. The robot cannot go back until the question of "what do people need?" is answered. But the answer to that question depends on who you ask, and how.

If there can be such a thing as cozy sci-fi, this is it. Thought provoking and lovely, I highly recommend this book.

Berlin, 1932. Sophie is a smart and sexually precocious 14-year-old coming of age during Hitler's rise to power. Forced to lead a double life when her father and boyfriend become Nazi collaborators, she reserves her dreams of becoming an actress for her beloved elderly neighbor, Isaac Zarco, and his friends, most of whom are Jews working against the government in a secret group called the Ring. Lyrical and thought provoking
Revisado: 01-29-25
Perhaps it’s the era in which I listen to this, but Zimler’s Seventh Gate is at once thought provoking and poetic.
The other two books of the Sephardic Cycle used to be on Audible and now aren’t. I can only hope they will return.
If you are looking for a light and fluffy read, this isn’t it. But if you want to learn more about what it means to be an everyday person of conscience in a world devolving into evil, this is an amazing possible glimpse.

Not great, drowning in cliches and poor story development
Revisado: 01-15-25
I’m now 17 hours in and I can honestly say the book does not improve enough for me to try to forge on through the rest of the box set.sometimes you win with box sets, sometimes you lose. I wasted my Audible credit so you don’t have to.
The humor is mostly flat, and the cliches and tropes so deeply overwhelm everything there is no room for irony or humor. The story arc is likewise so shallow, at times I felt like I was listening to a story written by a 6th grader. I’m truly baffled by all the positive reviews. If you came here hoping for something like Craig Alanson or Jeremy Robinson this is not it.

The main character is the equivalent of a Mary Sue, and is simultaneously unbelievable as “the best pilot in the world”.
The main character’s Afro Cuban girlfriend inexplicably has a (poorly done) British accent, while her brother has a best attempt at a Hispanic accent. Her role in the story becomes so unbelievable I found it hard to suspend any belief.
The villain becomes a painfully dreary cliche on an increasing basis.
I could go on, but suffice it to say I’m not willing to put more hours into listening to see if things improve.

Historia
No one knows where the Tufa came from or how they ended up in the mountains of east Tennessee. When the first Europeans came to the Smoky Mountains, the Tufa were already there. Dark-haired and enigmatic, they live quietly in the hills and valleys of Cloud County, their origins lost to history. But there are clues in their music, hidden in the songs they have passed down for generations.

Couldn’t finish - not for me
Revisado: 12-20-24
Spoiler alert!
I read an array of stuff including post apocalyptic, military action, a range of sci fi, fantasy including urban fantasy.
I couldn’t finish. I hung on through 6 hours and couldn’t continue.
At some point a couple hours in there is a graphic description of a pet being abused and slaughtered. Consider yourself forewarned.
The slut shaming is relentless.
At the point where it seemed like the worst male characters were conspiring to do who knows what to the main female character (strongly suggested sexual assault was in the works) I realized there wasn’t enough about the story that was redeeming for me.
I feel like this could have been an interesting story but the grim aspects didn’t work for me, and eventually overpowered what was already a very slow story arc.

Historia
It's been three long years since Deadbreak. That's what everyone's calling it - the day the dead rose. Every day since then, Jeremiah Reid has had one goal: to make his way back to his daughter. With his four-legged companion, Joe, Jeremiah has to travel a lawless wasteland teeming with zombies, bandits, and worse, like people who put anchovies on pizza (you know who you are). It's a new world out there, and no one is safe. People are weary, cities are in ruin, supplies are scarce, and brains are on the menu.

Revisado: 09-07-24
I decided to take a chance on this and honestly, I’m unsure why it doesn’t have more listens.
The characters are likeable, post apocalyptic without being grim dark, humor is interwoven as well as suspense.
Mr. Sanchez, I hope you are finishing the sequel…I’m eagerly waiting and very much enjoyed this book.

Great backstory!
Revisado: 06-09-24
I’m probably the least likely candidate to enjoy this series, I’m a mid-50’s lady and I’ve never been in the military. All that said, I have really enjoyed this entire Forgotten Ruin series.
I love the action and the poignant and reflective story lines woven throughout.
The narrator for this story was great, but I’ll admit, I’m not cool enough to understand all the slang. 😂 I ended up slowing down the narration speed a touch to allow my brain to fill in the blanks by inference and it worked just fine.
Highly recommended!

Ryland Grace is the sole survivor on a desperate, last-chance mission - and if he fails, humanity and the Earth itself will perish. Except that right now, he doesn't know that. He can't even remember his own name, let alone the nature of his assignment or how to complete it. All he knows is that he's been asleep for a very, very long time. And he's just been awakened to find himself millions of miles from home, with nothing but two corpses for company.

Perfection
Revisado: 04-23-24
So I’m not someone who needs flawless hard science in my science fiction, and I have no idea how this story measures up in that regard.
What I do love in my sci-fi is some heart, and this story has heart. I was surprised there were junctures where I was emotionally moved.
The narration is top notch, and very well done.
