Historia
In this culmination of his highly acclaimed Cultural Liturgies project, James K. A. Smith examines politics through the lens of liturgy. What if, he asks, citizens are not only thinkers or believers but also lovers? Smith explores how our analysis of political institutions would look different if we viewed them as incubators of love-shaping practices—not merely governing us but forming what we love.

Good content, tough listen
Revisado: 07-12-24
This book examines complex and deep subject matter, so audio format is tough since it should be studied rather than just read. I had not read a lot of the authors who the Mr. Smith repeatedly referenced and was not intimately familiar with what they had said, which often made it difficult to follow.

Good content, would love an update

Amazing how well this has aged. While time has passed, I don’t think much has materially changed in the conditions he describes. I think an updated edition would be valuable.

The Autobiography of Andrew Carnegie and The Gospel of Wealth

Historia
His good friend Mark Twain dubbed him "St. Andrew." British Prime Minister William Gladstone called him an "example" for the wealthy. Such terms seldom apply to multimillionaires. But Andrew Carnegie was no run-of-the-mill steel magnate. At age 13 and full of dreams, he sailed from his native Dunfermline, Scotland, to America. Here, in one volume, are two impressive works by Andrew Carnegie himself: his autobiography and The Gospel of Wealth, a groundbreaking manifesto on the duty of the wealthy to give back to society all of their fortunes.

Interesting story, overly philosophical at times
Revisado: 11-21-22
I lived in Pittsburgh for 8 years, where Carnegie made his fortune and where his name is everywhere. I was interested to learn more about him and so this book was interesting insofar as I did learn about him, but I could have done without his preaching of his personal naturalistic philosophy.

Useful Information, probably too much extrapolation
Revisado: 04-27-18
The ideas discussed were interesting and I will think about them and try to learn from some of the lessons, but I think the author assumes too much at times and fails to consider other possibilities to explain the behaviors he discusses, instead stretches to make his point. Overall I think the information discussed is useful but could have been stronger without the questionable examples.

Historia
Many people will remember Eric Liddell as the Olympic gold medalist from the Academy Award-winning film Chariots of Fire. Famously, Liddell would not run on Sunday because of his strict observance of the Christian Sabbath, and so he did not compete in his signature event, the 100 meters, at the 1924 Paris Olympics. He was the greatest sprinter in the world at the time, and his choice not to run was ridiculed by the British Olympic committee, his fellow athletes, and most of the world press.

Very inspiring story, well read
Revisado: 12-15-17
This story is very interesting and inspiring. The author obviously did a lot of research on the man to discuss his life beyond simply his Olympic win and subsequent death in an internment camp. He does jump around a bit however, making it slightly difficult to follow at times, particularly as an audiobook.

Historia
The God of the universe - the Creator of nitrogen and pine needles, galaxies and E-minor - loves us with a radical, unconditional, self-sacrificing love. And what is our typical response? We go to church, sing songs, and try not to cuss. Are you hungry for an authentic faith that addresses the problems of our world with tangible, even radical, solutions? God is calling you to a passionate love relationship with Himself. Because the answer to religious complacency isn’t working harder at a list of do's and don'ts - it's falling in love with God.

A follow up to the profound message of Crazy Love, Pastor Francis Chan offers a compelling invitation to understand, embrace, and follow the Holy Spirit's direction in our lives. "In the name of the Father, the Son, and ... the Holy Spirit." We pray in the name of all three, but how often do we live with an awareness of only the first two?

Challenging and thought-provoking
Revisado: 08-25-17
For me, the introduction about different views of the Spirit and fears and biases that are associated with those views struck me and got my attention. Chan's challenge to read what the Bible teaches about the Spirit and to explicitly seek Him is important and I believe it has unfortunately been overlooked in many churches, while abuses of use of "the Spirit" plague others. Regardless of where you are, this challenge to take a fresh look is important.

Decent book, below average narration
Revisado: 02-07-17
The content of the book is pretty good, but I found it difficult to listen because of the narration. The reader, when he put tried to put emphasis or inflection in at all, put it in awkward places and there were many times he simply read the content monotone when the book called for a little emphasis. It almost sounded like he was "sounding out" the words at times, focusing so hard on just reading that he failed to put any emotion into it or think about what he was reading to put emphasis where it was appropriate. While I recommend the book generally, I would rather read it than listen.

Solid Individual Analysis, Not Organizational Behavior
Revisado: 05-09-16
The individual habit analysis is good, but I think the author loses the plot by trying to address group behavior. Worth a listen, but I wish there was a little more analysis of individual habits and changing them rather than trying to tackle organizational behavior, which is a different topic and doesn't seem connected to the individual behavior described in the definition and explanation of "habit" earlier in the book.

Historia
J.P. Moreland issues a call to recapture the drama and power of kingdom living—to cultivate a revolution of Evangelical life, spirituality, thought, and Spirit-led power. Moreland believes that evangelical Christianity can mature and lead the surrounding society out of the meaningless morass it finds itself in with humility and vision. With clear insight, he puts the thoughtful Christian in a position to understand our current struggle and to return to a responsible presentation of "the way of Christ" as not just a way of right living, but also a way of knowledge and meaningful life.

Excellent book but deep for audio format
Revisado: 01-04-16
I enjoyed this book very much, as it has given me a lot of food for thought. However, the subject matter is a little deep and probably better suited for reading rather than listening. Still, as a busy professional, this was a great way to plow through a good book about an important topic in a reasonable time.
This book offers excellent discussion about different views within the church and trends inside and outside of it. It frames important questions for Christians to contemplate and attempts to point readers towards answers.
