Historia
It is 1814 and the defeat of Napoleon seems imminent, if the well-protected city of Toulouse can be conquered. For Richard Sharpe, the battle turns out to be one of the bloodiest of the Peninsula Wars, and he must draw on his last reserves of strength to lead his troops to victory.

This book should be called Sharpe loses everything
Revisado: 12-30-22
I understand most of Msr. Cornwell's choices, even so I am left with a bad taste in my mouth after this one. I finish the book hating Sharpe, hating Jane, disappointed with the fortunes of Harper and Frederickson, and unsatisfied with the fates of Ducos. The only bright spot is Calvet.

Historia
He was a survivor - a wanderer who traded tales for food and shelter in the dark and savage aftermath of a devastating war. Fate touches him one chill winter’s day when he borrows the jacket of a long-dead postal worker to protect himself from the cold. The old, worn uniform still has power as a symbol of hope, and with it he begins to weave his greatest tale, of a nation on the road to recovery. This is the story of a lie that became the most powerful kind of truth.

More relevant today than ever before
Revisado: 02-01-22
I saw the movie first, and that is the correct order. The book differs from the storytelling in the movie, expanding on it in many important ways and addressing issues too expensive to fit into a 2-hour format, as acknowledged by Mr. Brin in the forward. Mr. kennerly does a superb job with the narration, though I find it a bit sad sounding more often than I think the tone of the book calls for.

Historia
First conceived during a rainy summer holiday in the Highlands of Scotland in an attempt to amuse his stepson, Treasure Island began with the map. Young Lloyd Osbourne had drawn a crude version of an island, and Stevenson, looking over the boy's shoulder, began to elaborate, christening various curves and smudges the famed names of Skeleton Island and Spyglass Hill and finally adding the three red crosses marking the buried treasure.

Grisham does it again
Revisado: 11-04-20
I loved it. The pacing was great, and I relished every moment. His characters are diverse, and the tone is warm. I found all the bad reviews I'd read to have missed, glad I didn't listen to them.

Not sure what the father's storyline had to do with anything, but the rest was great. I really can't stop hating the father's character though, he's kind of one-dimensionally evil. Ruined an otherwise great tale.

I did not enjoy the vast stretches of English high societal nonsense. It felt like someone with a hangover was trying to recite Anna Karinina. It was still packed with the action I picked it up for.

At times I found the voice acting quite irritating
Revisado: 08-03-19
The voice acting would have been better if they'd gotten at least one other actor, but I suppose profit was at risk. Turetsky can sound winey at times, drawing his vowels out too long, but otherwise skilled at his craft.

Historia
Dale Maharidge’s father, like many World War II veterans, never talked about “the good war”. There was just one clue to his dad’s experience as a US Marine - a portrait with a close friend that hung permanently in their home. In The Dead Drink First, Dale, now a Pulitzer Prize-winning author, recounts his 18-year quest to find and repatriate the missing remains of his dad’s buddy, Herman Walter Mulligan, 73 years after he was killed in action.

great story, poor audio

I was really interested in this story, and it's really well researched and written, but it was hard to listen to with the sound design levels all over the place. from barely audible to booming in the same sentence.

Historia
Nahri has never believed in magic. Certainly, she has power; on the streets of 18th-century Cairo, she’s a con woman of unsurpassed talent. But she knows better than anyone that the trades she uses to get by - palm readings, zars, and a mysterious gift for healing - are all tricks, both the means to the delightful end of swindling Ottoman nobles and a reliable way to survive. But when Nahri accidentally summons Dara, an equally sly, darkly mysterious djinn warrior, to her side during one of her cons, she’s forced to reconsider her beliefs.

Didn't pull me in
Revisado: 08-29-18
I made it only through the first few chapters. Exposition and definitions abound and keep me from getting emersed. The narrator seems to only be able to do angry or annoyed male voices, which is irritating.
