Historia
In the summer of 1974 a heatwave blankets Boston and Mary Pat Fennessey is trying to stay one step ahead of the bill collectors. Mary Pat has lived her entire life in the projects of “Southie,” the Irish American enclave that stubbornly adheres to tradition and stands proudly apart. One night Mary Pat’s teenage daughter Jules stays out late and doesn’t come home. That same evening, a young Black man is found dead, struck by a subway train under mysterious circumstances. Mary Pat, propelled by a desperate search for her daughter, begins turning over stones best left untouched.

Outstanding!
Revisado: 01-29-25
Described the racial tension of that time period to the “T”. I was growing up in a suburb of Chicago then and there was so much hate—at least where I was. There was not one single black person in our town or in any school I went to until I went away to college. I didn’t hate blacks, but I didn’t have a chance to meet any until I was 18.
You can just feel the tension through the words of the book. And the sad thing is this is a true story.
Excellent narration. You really feel like you are there.
I really got immersed in this book.

Historia
The day before Yom Kippur, the synagogue sound system is on the blink, the floral arrangements are in disarray, and a member of Rabbi David Small’s congregation—in the Massachusetts town of Barnard’s Crossing—is terribly concerned with how much a Torah weighs. The rabbi is determined not to let these mundane concerns ruin his day of prayer and contemplation. But the holiest day of the Jewish year is interrupted when a member of the congregation is found dead in his car.

Great Book
Revisado: 12-01-24
As in all the other Harry Kemelman books I have read this one was interesting and had me guessing until toward the end. I like many of the characters in the book(s) and some not so much. The author does a good job developing them. I recommend this book.

I Was Sorry It Ended
Revisado: 08-28-24
It was a slow moving book—kind of like a winding river. (No pun intended.) Not too slow though. Good character development—especially for Victoria. I really “got into” her character. When I realized the book was over I said “what?” I would have liked it to continue. But it ended where it should. Recommend.

Historia
Although half of the population, women were treated as second class citizens in the United States and denied the fundamental right to vote. In 1872, Susan B. Anthony dared to cast her vote in a national election. She was arrested, tried, and convicted of the crime of "voting without having a lawful right to vote". This thrilling, firsthand account from suffragist Doris Stevens details the organized protests that hundreds of courageous women from across the country undertook in DC between 1913 and 1919, as well as the brutal consequences they had to endure.

So Very Informative
Revisado: 06-04-24
I knew a fair amount about women fight for and winning (not being given) The Vote, but I certainly didn’t know how much of a fight it was. Normally I don’t “go” for books in this much detail, but on this subject I do. There is so much apathy about voting in general, but for women to take it for granted is just…damn near a sin! Our suffragette sisters must be turning in their graves if they could see the state of women blowing off the hard won vote now. They were beaten, force fed and all sorts of awful things so we could have the privilege of voting. I know I come off as some kind of a nut, but if they had 1/10th of the knowledge on this I think they might look at it differently. Just watch the movie “Iron Jawed Angels”. You might learn something.

Pretty good, but…
Revisado: 04-08-24
Pretty good romance. Standard plot of a woman escaping domestic abuse and she and the new guy next door falling for each other. Positives are that she changed and improved herself; she got stronger. Negatives are the way the book portrays mental illness. Guy’s first wife got mentally ill after having a baby. Did she get treatment? IDK. She wasn’t one you’d want to live with or have your child with. The husband doesn’t treat this as one who got sick at all. Just as one who was an awful person. This should have been handled very differently. Very differently. Many women have mental health problems (like Post Partum Depression) after giving birth. Amazingly enough some people STILL don’t understand this. Books like this add to the problem. Shame on the author!

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It held my interest throughout. The main character is likable. There were some twists and turns along the way. I enjoyed the main character’s personal growth during the book. Apparently there is a second book. Looking forward to reading that.

Fascinating!
Revisado: 02-03-23
Fascinating and little known story about an assembled Unit during WWII that fooled the enemy into believing that they were an actual “presence” in certain key areas of of Europe during WWII and thus helping the Allies a good deal. I’ve never heard of anything like this! It was Classified until recently. Read about it. If you have any interest in this sort of thing, you won’t be sorry.
