Historia
With The Last Stand of the Tin Can Sailors and Ship of Ghosts, James D. Hornfischer created essential and enduring narratives about America’s World War II Navy, works of unique immediacy distinguished by rich portraits of ordinary men in extremis and exclusive new information. Now he does the same for the deadliest, most pivotal naval campaign of the Pacific war: Guadalcanal. Neptune’s Inferno is at once the most epic and the most intimate account ever written of the contest for control of the seaways of the Solomon Islands.

Gripping Account of Guadalcanal
Revisado: 12-06-24
My Dad was a Master Sgt, USMC and one of the “Flying Sargents” who carried the fight to the Japanese in a Dauntless out of Henderson Field. He floated for 3 days after being shot down over the slot. He was awarded three Purple Hearts and Twelve Air Medals. He never spoke about his experiences on Guadalcanal. I learned about this book when searching for details about the battle history in defending the island. This book conveys a grounded, solemn, and deeply sobering tale of the Navy’s struggle not with just the Japanese, but their naivety, hubris, and fumbling determination to prevail. I’m a Naval Academy Alumni, having retired after 25 years of service. The personal insight to Naval leaders of this period is enlightening and moving. The heroics of both Marines and Navy members from seaman and private through to Admiral and General were horrific, inspiring, shocking, utterly selfless, human, and saintly. I shall never, ever forget this account.

Historia
Ex-military policeman Jack Reacher is a drifter. He’s just passing through Margrave, Georgia, and in less than an hour, he’s arrested for murder. Not much of a welcome. All Reacher knows is that he didn’t kill anybody. At least not here. Not lately. But he doesn’t stand a chance of convincing anyone. Not in Margrave, Georgia. Not a chance in hell.

Historia
On May 18, 1860, William H. Seward, Salmon P. Chase, Edward Bates, and Abraham Lincoln waited in their hometowns for the results from the Republican National Convention in Chicago. When Lincoln emerged as the victor, his rivals were dismayed and angry. Throughout the turbulent 1850s, each had energetically sought the presidency as the conflict over slavery was leading inexorably to secession and civil war.

A True Tale of an Amazing Hero
Revisado: 06-24-24
I’ve read a lot about Abraham Lincoln. That he was an uncommon man is the greatest of understatements. This book, so competently performed, changed me. The legacy of the morality that he lived is as much of the ages as that of any avatar. I’m deeply grateful I heard these words!

From deep within the Venezuelan rain forest emanates the legend of a white goddess and a mysterious tribe with startling technical accomplishments. Few believe the tribe exists, and even fewer suspect its deity can change the course of history.

Disappointed. Loved all of Cussler’s books up to this point. Now I know choosing a book with his name isn’t a slam dunk anymore. I’ll start looking for other authors.

Historia
If anyone could be considered a Russian counterpart to the infamous British double-agent Kim Philby, it was Oleg Gordievsky. The son of two KGB agents and the product of the best Soviet institutions, the savvy, sophisticated Gordievsky grew to see his nation's communism as both criminal and philistine. He took his first posting for Russian intelligence in 1968 and eventually became the Soviet Union's top man in London, but from 1973 on he was secretly working for MI6.

Unique Insight into Pure, Unwavering Political Conviction
Revisado: 11-08-23
Well written and narrated, one is taken on a journey of a double agent’s career of conscience and sacrifice. I had no idea one person held us from nuclear annihilation in the Thatcher/Regan era. This is the first time I heard of espionage supporting repair of international relations.

Somewhere along the way, he lost sight of who he really is.

Shallow, Improbable Story. Stilted Narrative

Sorry I wasted my credit on this one. No different from the previous stories. Pretty much a “dead horse”, overexploited story line.

Seth is so confused. If Coulson is straight, why is he checking Seth out? Seth is an out and proud Secret Service agent. When he’s asked to assist the FBI on an investigation, he meets FBI agent Coulson. Coulson is straight. Or so he says. Seth has no reason to doubt that, not even when they become close friends. Really close friends. But that’s all they are: friends. Until Seth finds himself checking Coulson out a little too closely - especially certain over-sized body parts - and notices Coulson doing the same to him.

Great story premise that was left undone. Yay! They got together. But the suspense built around the whodonit was totally wasted. Sadly, that made the end disappointing.
