Endless violence on wild animals. Women denigrated
Revisado: 12-15-24
This is book that features destroying innocent wildlife -- nonstop. It also depicts all women as meek, weak, and dominated. For those two reasons, I would not read it to, nor recommend it to a child. I was shocked to learn that it was published in 1992. I would have guessed 1942.
On the bright side, the storytelling and reading are artful, and there are indeed sweet moments and engaging (male) characters. But the constant descriptions of dogs tearing animals apart, and the boy protagonist clubbing them to death if the dogs don't finish them off, turned my stomach and broke my heart. I only finished this read. because I never quit a book, always hoping for the best, but I was counting the hours and minutes till it ended

Historia
The British, it is often said, have a stiff upper lip and a dry sense of humour. It's true, we usually do, and in the case of this perfect compendium of short stories we absolutely do. Listen to our Scottish raconteur J. M. Barrie and English wits Jerome K. Jerome and Edward Lear for perfect proof of that. But humour is many things and from many places, so we also feature Mark Twain, our very talented American friend, to complete this rather witty and clever volume of short stories.

Historia
Though he’s officially retired from the Navajo Tribal Police, Joe Leaphorn occasionally helps his former colleagues Jim Chee and Bernie Manuelito crack particularly puzzling crimes. But there is that rare unsolved investigation that haunts every lawman, including the legendary Leaphorn. Joe still hasn’t let go of his “last case”—a mystery involving a priceless Navajo rug that was supposedly destroyed in a fire. Nine years later, what looks like the same one-of-a-kind rug turns up in a magazine spread, and the man who showed Joe the photo has gone missing.

Great selection and well read
Revisado: 03-16-23
This is a great selection of stories by world class writers. I have been reading and listening to (and writing) short stories for 70+ years, and I was pleased to discover that many of the stories I had never come across before. I thought the readers did a fine job.
