Historia
As the sole survivor of the car crash that killed her parents, grief-stricken paramedic Kit MacKlenna is stunned to learn her life is built on lies. A legacy from her father includes a faded letter and a well-worn journal. The journal reveals she was abandoned as a baby 160 years ago. The only clues to her identity are a blood-splattered shawl, a locket with the portrait of a 19th century man, and a Celtic brooch with magical powers.

Yawn...
Revisado: 06-08-24
This was chosen for book club, otherwise I would not have finished it. Poorly written Outlander copycat. Predictable with shallow character development, so shallow that I never really cared about any of them; therefore I never really cared about the story. Narrator did her best and her Scottish accent was nice.

When her brother ships out to serve in Vietnam, she joins the Army Nurse Corps and follows his path.

overrated
Revisado: 04-02-24
I don't understand why this book is on the NYT best seller list. Narrator is great, but the story is so predictable due to the author's clearly telling us what is about to happen. I like more subtlety - show me through dialogue and reaction. You didn't have to *tell* me over and over that Frankie was no longer the girl she was prior to Vietnam. The subject matter is compelling, though. Americans treated veterans horribly during this time. I am grateful the author brought this, and especially the plight of female veterans, to light.

Need a professional actor to narrate
Revisado: 10-27-22
I fall for it every time. I think "Hey, he's British, he's educated, his narration will be juuuuust fine." Not so for this material. Lownie's conversational voice is much more interesting than his reading voice which is a shame because it was difficult to tell who was speaking or whose POV we were listening to without any changes in tone whatsoever. Of course the story is riveting and his research noteworthy. Sadly, both got lost in the subpar narration.

It is an ordinary Thursday, and things should finally be returning to normal. Except trouble is never far away where the Thursday Murder Club are concerned. A decade-old cold case—their favorite kind--leads them to a local news legend and a murder with no body and no answers. Then a new foe pays Elizabeth a visit. Her mission? Kill or be killed. Suddenly the cold case has become red hot.

Love the characters in spite of whispery narration
Revisado: 10-22-22
I assume Lesley Manville was unavailable due to filming The Crown? What a shame. I am sure Fiona Shaw is a lovely person but the director of this audio book, Mr or Ms Potts, did Ms Shaw a great disservice in not correcting her breathless narration. I eventually got used to it and tried to disregard, but it was difficult, and at times (especially in the car), I couldn't hear it at all. I do agree with other reviews that Joyce seemed to come out the most misrepresented of the gang which is really unfortunate as so much of Joyce's character is revealed subtly and with nuance. Please, Mr. Osman, you're a big fish in the industry. Do insist on Ms Manville for the next one or we will scream blue murder more loudly than Conversational French when they don't get the Jigsaw Room on time. ;-)

Historia
Brilliantly evoking the long-vanished world of masters and servants portrayed in Downton Abbey and Upstairs, Downstairs, Margaret Powell’s classic memoir of her time in service, Below Stairs, is the remarkable true story of an indomitable woman who, though she served in the great houses of England, never stopped aiming high. Powell first arrived at the servants' entrance of one of those great houses in the 1920s. As a kitchen maid - the lowest of the low - she entered an entirely new world; one of stoves to be blacked, vegetables to be scrubbed, mistresses to be appeased, and bootlaces to be ironed.

Really fascinating glimpse of an era recently brought to life by Downton Abbey. Narrator was excellent. Story was well-told and I found myself laughing out loud at the author's dry, British humor.

Better to read the physical book
Revisado: 06-13-22
One doesn't listen to as much as wade through this story. I can appreciate the author's research, but the story just gets bogged down. Would probably be easier to follow in the written version

Historia
1941. Audrey Coltrane has always wanted to fly. It's why she implored her father to teach her at the little airfield back home in Texas. It’s why she signed up to train military pilots in Hawaii when the war in Europe began. And it’s why she insists she is not interested in any dream-derailing romantic involvements, even with the disarming Lieutenant James Hart, who fast becomes a friend as treasured as the women with whom she flies. Then one fateful day, she gets caught in the air over Pearl Harbor just as the bombs begin to fall, and suddenly, nowhere feels safe.

It's 1920, and Christmas is coming. Major Lennox finds a body on his doorstep - why on his doorstep? Was it to do with the Countess? Was it about the ruby necklace? Lennox goes to Melrose Court, home to his uncle, Lord Melrose, to uncover the mystery. But then, the murders begin, and it snows, and it all becomes very complicated.

Really disappointing
Revisado: 04-13-20
I love a good British manor mystery but this author made an incredibly basic mistake: she failed to craft a single character I cared about. I listened to the end, hoping I'd love or hate someone, but I felt nothing but annoyance. And it wasn't even hard to figure out who the killer was.

Historia
Without John C. Houbolt, a mid-level engineer at NASA, Apollo 11 would never have made it to the moon. Top NASA engineers on the project, including Werner Von Braun, strongly advocated for a single, huge spacecraft to travel to the moon, land, and return to Earth. It's the scenario used in 1950s cartoons and horror movies about traveling to outer space. Houbolt had another idea: Lunar Orbit Rendezvous. LOR would link two spacecraft in orbit while the crafts were travelling at 3,600 miles an hour around the moon. His plan was ridiculed and considered unthinkable.

Strong story. Loved the actual transmissions & interviews worked into the recording. I usually do not like it when authors read their own work, but Todd did a really good job.
