TOTALLY DISGUSTING & DISAPPOINTING..YUCK

What a shame that an author who could write the beautiful novel "The Lovely Bones" could lower herself to write such crap. This is a terrifyingly tragic story. I started the book 3 times---the third time I got in 2 hours and then removed it from my player and will remove it from my library. AN AWFUL PIECE OF JUNK!

Amazing!

This might very well be the most incredible book I have ever read, and the narrator, the best I've ever listened to. It took me at least a half an hour to be grabbed by the book, but after that, I was hooked---could hardly accomplish anything because I wanted to be listening to this magnificent, chilling, informative, intelligent work of art. I learned so much about the Crusades, Medieval medicine, the Catholic church, females in that era, and much much more. I can't rave enough about this book, and will undoubedtly listen to it again...despite its length.

Most Terrifying?

This book might well be the most grisly, frightening, and yes---terrifying mysteries I've read in a long time. I'm a huge Stephen King fan and never thought I could be shaken up beyond anything he's written. But this book scared the heck out of me. Often I had to turn it off just because I couldn't listen to more grim details. The story is fascinating and certainly not like anything else I've read. And the narrator is just wonderful! There was seldom a time when I didn't know who was speaking, even though many of the lesser "cop" characters pretty much could be mistaken for one another. I guess the degree of sickness on the part of this serial killer is just this side of Hannibal Lechter, but because he is so "normal", he frightened me even more. I would definitely read more books by this author and this narrator. Be prepared to be scared!

How Could Grafton Possibly Have Written This

What a disappointment! This is definite the most uniterestinhg novel I've read in a long time. The author seems to have lost the soul of Kinsey Milhorne. There's just not anyone in this book that I care about and I don't enjoy books with few light moments. It's too much of a departure from her earlier books. Bring back those old favorite characters that add charm and some laughs. I hope "U" is for "Upward"!

An amazing accomplishment

This is one of the most fascinating books I've read in a very long time. I found myself sitting in my car after pulling it into the garage because I wanted to hear what came next. The fellow who called this a "chick" book has to be reviewing the wrong book! I will now try to find a hard copy and read that as well. A great read!

It's hard to completely love this awesome book, because as expressed by others, the "heroine" is so unlikable through at least 3/4 of the book. I know the alcoholism was integral to the entire story, but it got old real fast and I wanted to scream and shake her everytime Susan told us...and herself... that she could beat it. How ridiculous, given that she makes almost no attempt to do so. The rationalization was infuriating. Having said that, though, this was truly one of the most fascinating books I've ever read. I'd put it right up there with many of Stephen King's best. The last three hours were so grueling and intense that I could only listen in short time periods! As the grandparent of a precious autistic young man, I was impressed with the author's description of typical autistic characteristics. The reader was good, but could've been a more animated at times. Her reading of Darcy was exceptional, "Edgar", very good; but as Susan, I found her whiney. I almost dismissed this reading after the first hour---fortunately, I stuck it out and got the chill of my life! I'll probably read the hard copy now.

Write like a man!

Whatever made James Patterson, whose Alex Cross books I have liked until they, too, became very trite think that he could write as women??? He must have a group of people writing for him!! The worst thing about this poorly-written book, is that Patterson has absolutely NO ear for the voice of girlfriends. The language, & especially during their meals together, is so stilted and sounds nothing like woman/girl talk. Please take more time on these books, Mr. P. You don't need to turn 6 out every year! Try one well plotted, with a white American male as the hero, and who doesn't jump into bed with 3 or 4 women in every book. The reader was good, but she must have felt awful using this stupid non-girly language.

Ho Hum..and, what's

I had prepared a lengthy critique of this lengthy, preachy novel. Then I saw that Alicia from neighboring Indianapolis said it perfectly. If there was ever a book that I wish I had read an abridged edition of, it's this one. To say that it is preachy, didactic, propagandized, and about twice as long as it should be is to give it more importance than it deserves! I found it arrogant that the characters constantly used phrases like "freestanding innocence," which I still don't know the meaning of; and a parcel of acronyms, which I couldn't keep straight. Perhaps if the "book" were in front of me, I could keep checking back; but this doesn't work on my Otis. I'd have spent several hours jumping back and forth. Like yet another reviewer, I'd have been happy to have skipped the entire mid-section. But then I hated the ending so much that maybe I should have just read Part I, and let it go at that. I have tried to read two regular books by this author, and never got far. Now I remember why. Ah, well, I certainly had it reinforced that the liberals are all good guys and the conservatives...well...the meanies! A tiresome cliche.

Great, even for the computer illiterate

Although I have little techno knowledge, I was able to follow and understand the often highly-technical language of the world in which this novel exists. The story was wonderful! Lots of interesting characters, great plot, and always suspenseful. Just when I thought I know where the story was headed, it shifted. I'd love to read more by Mr. Finder.

Joe Montegna IS Spenser

Every time I have to leave my car and disconnect from my Otis, I find myself saying outloud, I LOVE THIS BOOK! I've been reading Robert Parker's novels for a long time and have enjoyed his amazing way of putting so much into so few words. And now I'm enjoying them even more on Audible books. Parker succeeds at what I use to tell my creative writing students to attempt--establish a voice that's all your own. And Montegna, a fabulous actor, strikes just the right vocal chord of a brilliant, satiric wiseguy, who puts more into a simple two word sentence like "I did" than most actors can get out of a long monologue! Once again..I love this novel!
