Super Engaging!
Revisado: 04-17-25
It truly captured my attention. It's very well written. The narrators do a great job of staying in character. It really connects history with the lives of modern day people. After listening to this book, I gifted another copy of the audio book to my sister as it is that good.

Amazing personal history of a favorite talent
Revisado: 02-03-25
I appreciate that Steve Martin narrated his own story. We all know Steve Martin on stage and on a screen. He is super talented. I appreciate his honest story of his background and personal history. It was a surprise. He really worked hard to become a success on so many levels. I already admire him for his many talents (and writing abilities), and now I appreciate him even more. He really didn't let life's obstacles get him down while working on standing up, and he stayed standing up. Worth listening to.

Historia
What would happen if a shy introvert lived like a gregarious extrovert for one year? If she knowingly and willingly put herself in perilous social situations that she’d normally avoid at all costs? Writer Jessica Pan intends to find out. With the help of various extrovert mentors, Jessica sets up a series of personal challenges (talk to strangers, perform stand-up comedy, host a dinner party, travel alone, make friends on the road, and much, much worse) to explore whether living like an extrovert can teach her lessons that might improve the quality of her life.

Tips for overcoming uncomfortable shyness
Revisado: 12-31-24
I very much appreciated the first half of the book. Both my sons are introverts, and one has always been extremely shy, which caused him to have great anxiety. The author is to be applauded for taking on overcoming her own uncomfortableness in crowd situations and being in the spotlight. She took on more challenges of discomfort than an extrovert who is not shy would have taken on in order to feel okay with being in front of a crowd. Eventually, the author chose improv comedy, which was an excellent challenge. However, I lost interest when there were more than two chapters with many details about the improv comedy routines, etc. Trying improv is an excellent suggestion if one wants to overcome shyness. I just didn't enjoy hearing about a lot of improv. The author is spot on that being an introvert and being shy can cause anxiety and also lead to missed opportunities. The "cure" is just what the author did - challenged herself and got out of her "discomfort zone."

Historia
When Norm Macdonald, one of the greatest stand-up comics of all time, was approached to write a celebrity memoir, he flatly refused, calling the genre “one step below instruction manuals.” Norm then promptly took a two-year hiatus from stand-up comedy to live on a farm in northern Canada. When he emerged he had under his arm a manuscript, a genre-smashing book about comedy, tragedy, love, loss, war, and redemption. When asked if this was the celebrity memoir, Norm replied, “Call it anything you damn like.”

This book is for Norm Macdonald's fans
Revisado: 12-05-24
Norm Macdonald was "before my time," and I have seen very little of his comedy. His name is well known. I got this book thinking I could find out about Norm, the comedian. Instead, I got a taste of his comedy. If you are familiar with Norm Macdonald's comedy and enjoy it, then you would totally enjoy this book. After listening to this book, I do not want to get familiar with Norm's comedy routines. It is not my comedic taste. I actually fast forwarded through parts of the book, just to see if another section would be more to my liking ("Nope"). But that is why there are so many comedians - to accommodate each our senses of humor. If you like Norm Macdonald's stories and comedy routines, then you will like this.

Revisado: 12-05-24
I really appreciated Jen's honesty about herself and her relationships during her 12 months of journeys. I also loved hearing about the different places she travelled to. If you want to hear about someone making big changes in her life, even though scared to do so. and learn about other cultures, this books is worth listening to. Jen's narration was easy to follow. Jen is a very accomplished and interesting person, and it is great she came to find that out. I looked her up and the places she travelled to after while listening to the book.

Enjoyable and Insightful
Revisado: 03-15-24
The narrator, being the author, is pleasant to listen to. I found his book to be more of a personal commentary on how to be open to learning about different people, cultures and personalities - those that are different from our own. Basically, we should all take a personal interest in others, a basic and kind interest. He writes about his own experiences. For someone who not good at socializing at functions, this book might be helpful to be more flexible and chatty with meeting new people.

Insight on Human Nature/Emotions; Worth the Listen
Revisado: 12-06-23
This was my first Kristan Higgins novel. I was not expecting anyone to be a hero or heroine. I also did not relate to the main character, Chastity. Yet, I truly enjoyed the description of all of the characters and the emotions that came across as real human emotions, not fairytale, of the characters. It is a novel into a family's life, not just Chastity's life. I became equally interested in what was going on with Chastity's relatives and coworkers as with Chastity. The last chapter was the best, a great conclusion, in my opinion. The writer did give insight on how some people think and feel and react to one another. Xe Sands was consistent in the voices she used for the different characters, which is not an easy task. However, I imagined some of the voices to sound differently, e.g., Chastity's parents' voices, which would definitely sound younger in real life than as read. I had to remember they were not in their early 90's. This book is engaging and overall pleasant. I recommend it.

Excellent research, chronology by Author Trivedi
Revisado: 09-29-23
Author Trivedi prepared excellent, chronological history and research and updates on CF and how CF impacted families. Her writings helped me know about CF, but also what is involved in the research for any disease and medications. The challenge was listening to the narrator, but I pushed through as I wanted to learn more. I would have preferred the author as the narrator.

Nathan Runkle would have been a fifth-generation farmer in his small Midwestern town. Instead, he founded our nation's leading nonprofit organization for protecting factory farmed animals. In Mercy for Animals, Nathan brings us into the trenches of his organization's work; from MFA's early days in grassroots activism, to dangerous and dramatic experiences doing undercover investigations, to the organization's current large-scale efforts at making sweeping legislative change to protect factory farmed animals and encourage compassionate food choices.

Worth Listening To!
Revisado: 09-08-23
I am not vegan, but I am humanitarian. I am so impressed on how Mercy for Animals came into existence, by a young Milo Runkle's concern for the humane treatment of animals, then being joined by friends who had the same concern. Thanks to Mercy for Animals, animals raised to be food for humans are getting more humane care. The inhumane care definitely seemed to make the workers at the meat plants a bit crazy, and how could it not make one a bit "off," as it was horrible. Toward the end of the book, practical guidance is given on becoming vegetarian or at least eating less meat. I have taken up the "Meatless Monday" suggestion for a start. I do like vegetables, so it is easy enough for me to eat more vegetables and lentils. For some others, it would be a bigger adjustment. To me, the author never came across judgmental of those who eat meat. The obvious concern for the humane treatment of animals was the predominant message. Mercy for Animals truly has benefited all of us and the animals. The organization has gone above and beyond what I ever thought possible. I am sure those at Mercy for Animals would be grateful if there were no more animals being manufactured as food. Until then, they have made tremendous strides in improving how animals are treated in the manufacturing process, alleviating some of the sadistic treatment of animals. The narrator was easy to listen to. I plan to listen to the book again.

Interesting story of how life was in late 1930's
Revisado: 07-03-23
If you enjoy learning about decent people and life styles, I believe you would enjoy this book. The details of the characters in the story, as written and read, made the characters real to me, as if I met each one of them. I could visualize the characters and settings and the history that went with the story. It is a great, authentic depiction of life across the United States in the late 1930's. The main character is reliving (in his mind) his life's events from when he was a young man, in order to remember all of the details and write those down. At times, he is interrupted by the present-day folks who are in his life. A few times I did have to relisten to some parts, the parts when he was interrupted by the present-day folks. The conclusion and epilogue are the wrapping paper and a bow on the whole story and very touching. The book motivated me to find the articles written about the giraffes, the hurricane, the San Diego Zoo, the zookeeper, etc.
