kept me wanting to read
Revisado: 10-11-22
I struggle with the book at first because I was thinking "who wants to hear about her reasons for marrying seven times," but then the book took some interesting twists.

I liked this book because of the truth that he put into it. He exposed himself--possibly to ridicule and machoism. Kudos and thank you Will Smith, for the honesty.

What would Toni Morrison say
Revisado: 11-22-21
This book is full of cliches and poorly written. It plods along until you say, "Get to the point," "What's this story about," and then she ties up the whole story, in one fell swoop, in the last chapter. The references to racism are a laundry list of unending discussion points between the characters. The first few times you think "that's refreshing," then it gets ubiquitously exhausting, taking over the plot--where there is a plot. The cliches are rampant with the characters constantly saying something like, "You know how the saying goes," followed by some trite cultural reference. There were so many instances, about every other paragraph, that make me winch.

not a thought-provoking book, but thought-provoking in some ways regarding the relationships between men and women and the choices we make.

good luck with this one
Revisado: 08-11-20
the book was okay but it was alm8ost in possible to follow the story. the narrator had a lovely voice but everytime spoke for a character I could barelyunderstand what he said. between his accent and the fact that the volume of his voice was extremely low, I missed whole portions of the book and had difficulty following the storyline.

Historia
Bobi Conn was raised in a remote Kentucky holler in 1980s Appalachia. She remembers her tin-roofed house tucked away in a vast forest paradise; the sparkling creeks, with their frogs and crawdads; the sweet blackberries growing along the road to her granny’s; and her abusive father. An elegiac account of survival despite being born poor, female, and cloistered, Bobi’s testament is one of hope for all vulnerable populations, particularly women and girls caught in the cycle of poverty and abuse.

weak book

There was so much that they could have done with this story that they didn't do. It ended up being a love story and also very didactic. Both of which were disappointing.
