Historia
In ancient Rome, all the best stories have one thing in common - murder. In one 50-year period, 26 emperors were murdered. But what did killing mean in a city where gladiators fought to the death to sate a crowd? In A Fatal Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, Emma Southon examines a trove of real-life homicides from Roman history to explore Roman culture, including how perpetrator, victim, and the act itself were regarded by ordinary people. Inside ancient Rome’s darkly fascinating history, we see how the Romans viewed life and death and what it means to be human.

History that reads like today!
Revisado: 06-26-23
One of the best histories I have ever read because the author makes it live for the reader by using modern pop culture metaphors. She is also funny and incredibly witty. A must read.

A Perfectly Fine Story
Revisado: 02-13-23
Read this book for its fabulous depiction of life in Cuba before and after the revolution. It’s what kept me engaged. However, I find the storyline to be a predictable romance. So if that’s your thing, you will love it. But, it just wasn’t for me.

I Wanted To Love It BUT…..
Revisado: 02-05-23
I wanted to love this book but it just fell flat. First, the book is both slow moving (which I don’t mind) but also incredibly fast. Important moments seem glossed over and the ending coming out of NO WHERE. While questions about the magic of this world are left unanswered. Second, beyond character names and general place names this book is NOT Arthurian! None of the cannon events well attested in previous iterations of Arthurian Legend are here. What I love about other woman centered retellings of the Arthurian legend is the twist and spin put on events well known in the sources. This gives the story new depth and meaning in your current day and age. This book doesn’t do that. And it’s every disappointing. I would have enjoyed it way more if the author had created a fantasy world totally separate from Arthur. Which would have been simple, change all the names in the book and nothing Arthurian would remain.

There is not a big enough MEH
Revisado: 01-12-23
I wanted to love this book. Everything from the blurb said it was going to be right up my ally. But, it was just blah. Places where it was successful I feel like other fantasy books have done it better. And, places where it tried to innovate it felt forced. Somethings tied up way too neatly while other things were left unsatisfactorily open.

Josephine's life story was as turbulent as the age, an era of revolution and social upheaval, of the guillotine and of frenzied hedonism. With telling psychological depth and compelling literary grace, Carolly Erickson brings the complex, charming, ever resilient Josephine to life in this memorable portrait, one that carries the reader from the sensual richness of her childhood in the tropics to her final lonely days at Malmaison.

You can Skip this One
Revisado: 12-01-22
First, the audio of this book feels a little off. The volume of the audio drops at times at the end of sentences making me think the file had stopped playing. Not sure if this was the narrator or the recording.
Second, I have listened and read WAY BETTER creative non-fiction. The book is filled with “ Josephine MUST have felt” or “ Josephine MUST have thought”. But, how could the author state this without a written source to back it up. That really bugged me.

Historia
Neil Gaiman has long been inspired by ancient mythology in creating the fantastical realms of his fiction. Now he turns his attention back to the source, presenting a bravura rendition of the great northern tales. In Norse Mythology, Gaiman fashions primeval stories into a novelistic arc that begins with the genesis of the legendary nine worlds; delves into the exploits of the deities, dwarves, and giants; and culminates in Ragnarok, the twilight of the gods and the rebirth of a new time and people.

Historia
On a dark, wintry day, Eliza Grey receives a mysterious letter from her ailing Nana Mora begging her to come for a visit. This is an easy "Yes". Eliza has always preferred Nana Mora's beach cottage on St. Simons Island to the apartment she and her mom call home in the city. The island is a magical place where stories and legends grow as thick as the Spanish moss dangling in the trees. Now, Nana Mora's eyesight is fading, and there's something she wants to show Eliza before it’s totally gone: a mythical place locals refer to as Sirens Harbor.

Historia
When a banished witch falls in love with the legendary trickster Loki, she risks the wrath of the gods in this moving, subversive debut novel that reimagines Norse mythology. Angrboda’s story begins where most witches' tales end: with a burning. A punishment from Odin for refusing to provide him with knowledge of the future, the fire leaves Angrboda injured and powerless, and she flees into the farthest reaches of a remote forest. There she is found by a man who reveals himself to be Loki, and her initial distrust of him transforms into a deep and abiding love.

A New Favorite
Revisado: 01-04-22
I love mythology, which is why this book immediately sparked my interest. However, I was wary because I am not super familiar with Norse Myth. However, it didn’t matter because this book was so expertly crafted that it explained what I needed to know without getting bogged down in exposition. The story stayed focused on the family and in particular the mother. I deeply appreciated this because it made this huge epic myth personal and deeply human as all myth should be. So whether you are a mythology nerd or just a lover of great fiction this book is for you.
P.S.
If you are a fan of Mists of Avalon or Madeline Miller listen to this book immediately! You’ll love it.
