Fun story and world but obvious plot lines
Revisado: 02-01-24
I get why the movie is so different. If the movie was just like the book, it would be a little cringy and super obvious what would happen, but it's a fun story and overall interesting plot that still has me wanting to see the end even if I know what's coming

Pretty boring.
Revisado: 01-01-23
I found the book to be pretty predictable and had lots of build-up for not much to happen.

The writing was good, the narration was good...the story was just blah. Not relatable. I did enjoy the ending though.

Historia
During the languid days of the Christmas break, a group of 30-something friends from Oxford meets to welcome in the New Year together, a tradition they began as students 10 years ago. For this vacation, they’ve chosen an idyllic and isolated estate in the Scottish Highlands - the perfect place to get away and unwind by themselves. They arrive on December 30, just before a historic blizzard seals the lodge off from the outside world. Two days later, on New Year’s Day, one of them is dead.

Historia
Back in the days before Vegas was big, when the Mob was at its peak and neon lights were but a glimmer on the horizon, a little Southern town styled itself as a premier destination for the American leisure class. Hot Springs, Arkansas was home to healing waters, Art Deco splendor, and America's original national park - as well as horse racing, nearly a dozen illegal casinos, countless backrooms and brothels, and some of the country’s most bald-faced criminals.

No story...just names and dates
Revisado: 05-09-21
I understand that this was supposed to be a historically accurate telling of the vapors during the early to mid 1900s but read like a history book with just a little more pep and way less organization.
the book hopped from one undeveloped character to another along the timeline. The author just tried to do much with the story.

Historia
Amber wakes up in a hospital. She can't move. She can't speak. She can't open her eyes. She can hear everyone around her, but they have no idea. Amber doesn't remember what happened, but she has a suspicion her husband had something to do with it. Alternating between her paralyzed present, the week before her accident, and a series of childhood diaries from 20 years ago, this brilliant psychological thriller asks: Is something really a lie if you believe it's the truth?

Historia
Casey Duncan, Rockton's only detective on a police force of three, has already faced murder, arson, and falling in love in the several months she's lived there. When a US marshal shows up demanding the release of one of the residents but won't say who, Casey and her boyfriend, Sheriff Eric Dalton, are skeptical. And yet only hours later, the marshal is shot dead, and the only possible suspects are the townspeople and Casey's estranged sister....

winding story with unsatisfactory ending

I've listened to all the books in this series and this one was definitely the bottom of the barrel. There was just too much going on and the story lines weren't well flushed out to really get sucked into any one of them.

Historia
When experienced homicide detective Casey Duncan first moved to the secret town of Rockton, she expected a safe haven for people like her, people running from their past misdeeds and past lives. She knew living in Rockton meant living off the grid completely: no cell phones, no Internet, no mail, very little electricity, and no way of getting in or out without the town council's approval. What she didn't expect is that Rockton comes with its own set of secrets and dangers.

Entertaining story but repetitive
Revisado: 03-06-19
This series' overall concept is very intriguing but the demensions of the characters aren't very wide so the interactions felt repetitive by about 50% of the way through.
