Historia
One day, I was a regular college student, working a boring job and studying for finals - and the next, I was transformed into some strange creature of the night. Now, I’ve got powers I don’t understand, I can change my appearance with a thought, and I’m having all kinds of odd...cravings. If I thought all this was gonna get me out of going to college, though, I’ve got another think coming. Nope, I still need an education.

Good start, but it gets worse
Revisado: 12-29-22
It started out well, but then things mostly stopped happening. Whatever plot was there was often very repetitive. Unfortunately, I found this book to be pretty boring as a result.

Historia
Eff was born a thirteenth child. Her twin brother, Lan, is the seventh son of a seventh son. This means he's supposed to possess amazing talent - and she's supposed to bring only bad things to her family and her town. Undeterred, her family moves to the frontier, where her father will be a professor of magic at a school perilously close to the magical divide that separates settlers from the beasts of the wild. With wit and wonder, Patricia Wrede creates an alternate history of westward expansion that will delight fans of both J. K. Rowling and Laura Ingalls Wilder.

I kept thinking that the book was building up to something grand, and it was except that the grand finale was only interesting thing about the book and it was over far too quickly.

Lots of potential, but bad execution
Revisado: 04-02-20
I had hoped that this book would be interesting, and it was in the beginning. But at some point you realize that nothing really interesting has happened for most of the book. The ending was fun, but far too convenient and the characters are incredibly whiny and self-absorbed.
The narration also bothered me. There wasn't much wrong with the performance, but the readers (especially one) went between whispering and screaming. It was incredibly annoying since my options were either being deafened or constantly having to pick up my phone to temporarily increase the sound and rewind.
Overall, this book was quite an unpleasant experience.

Simple Fairytale
Revisado: 07-05-18
I enjoyed it despite the fact that it was quite a simple book. It feels like a simple fairytale with the plot progressing at the expected pace and in the expected way. It wasn't a very exciting plot, but it does move along and I enjoyed some of the more realistic repercussions of the curse. It was easy to listen to and it's a feel-good book. It's not amazing, but it's definitely enjoyable which is why I rated it 5 stars. There aren't many plot twists so I won't go into a summary of the plot and let you discover them on your own.
The narrator did take a bit of getting used to so it might be a good idea to listen to the sample before buying. She has a clipped speedy style that bothered me for several hours in the beginning.

Good if you enjoy the characters
Revisado: 05-18-18
I've read other reviews that said this book was just a long version of catching up with the characters. I found this to be true. Nothing really happens for its own sake and while there are some hints for stories that might be explored in upcoming books, there is nothing concrete and no conflict or resolution in this one. It's a long epilogue, but I still enjoyed it. It was an easy book to listen to and I don't regret getting it. It might have been better as part of a larger novel, but I'm fine with this format.
Something I wasn't expecting was for the narrator to bother me. While I didn't enjoy the original switch just because I like to have one narrator reading an entire series because he/she brings their own touch to the characters and the story, I got used to her fairly quickly and grew to like her. I didn't in this book. For some reason her interpretation of the characters seems to have changed and I didn't like it.

It was good again
Revisado: 05-07-18
I almost gave up on this series. I enjoyed the first two books and really didn't like the next two. But this book brought back all the things I had previously liked. Jayne seems to be a much better person in this one. She actually cares about her new guy, his feelings and his life instead of just using him. She actually does some things that are quite noble and self-sacrificing. The new guy is perfect to the point of being unrealistic, but it's a supernatural romance so why not...
The story was another nice surprise. There were some fun twists and the plot was interesting.
The narrator did a good job as usual, narrating Jayne as somewhat immature, but overall well-intentioned.

Starfall: a world on the edge, where crooks and smugglers hide in the gloomy shadows and modern technology refuses to work. And that includes the TARDIS. The pioneers who used to be drawn by the hope of making a fortune from the mines can find easier picking elsewhere. But they still come... for the romance of it, or old-fashioned organic mining. Or in the hope of finding the lost treasure of Hamlek Glint, scourge of the spaceways, privateer, adventurer, bandit.

Easy and a lot of fun
Revisado: 05-04-18
I really enjoyed having this story read by the tenth Doctor because it just sounded more authentic and because Tennant is a great narrator. He has a variety of different voices for all the characters and they all sound very appropriate.
The story was great too. It was quick and easy and felt like a longer episode. There were quite a few surprises too. It wasn't really unique nor did it have that touch of melancholy that I enjoyed in the show, but it was definitely fun. A great story about space pirates, robots, murders and second chances.

Not as good as the first book
Revisado: 01-16-18
I wanted to love this book, I really did. I read the first one years ago and fell in love with it, and perhaps in part because of that, this sequel was terribly disappointing. There were parts I enjoyed of course like the origin story of the elixir (not really a spoiler since you start finding out about that very early on) and the other interesting surprises that arc involved. Although I felt that it somewhat took away from the depth of the horror of the brand of immortality offered by something that can never be reversed or erased. I also felt that the charters just weren't the same. While it's understandable that they would change, I found myself wishing the changes were not so drastic since I didn't really like who they had turned into (Julie felt like she had become less intelligent and lost her personality to Ramses). I'm not even sure that I'm glad I listened to this since in many ways it actually took away from the depth of the charters and the story set up in the previous novel.
I also did not enjoy the aggressive style of the narrator. Nothing wrong with it; it just didn't fit the story as I imagined it.

Clam jam. Definition: the female equivalent of a cock block. Example: You're chatting with a guy you're interested in, and your friend comes along and lays claim to him. That's my life - except it's worse. My friend who keeps "jamming" me is my gay roommate. Fact: He went home with three - yes, three - of the guys I had been so sure were into me. Fact: He's really pissing me off. I'll never manage to get a boyfriend before the age of 50 if he keeps this up. Fact: Secretly, I wonder what it would be like if he weren't gay.

Slow and childish
Revisado: 01-09-18
I actually used this book to help me fall asleep...it was that tedious for me. It actually started out well with some mild humor and sweet (though simplistic) relationships. After a while though, it just became a repetition of the same things over and over again. The plot didn't really go anywhere and I knew what was going to happen throughout from the very beginning. This would have been fine if the writing itself had been engaging and humorous enough to keep me interested, but alas, it really wasn't.
I'm not going to give the plot away since the description does that, but I will say that nothing else really happens throughout the book and I only see this being entertaining if you want a very very easy read.
The narrators did a good job. I personally didn't like their style, but there was nothing wrong with it.

If you read the first one, you know what to expect
Revisado: 12-06-17
This book was just as good, fun, easy and cute as the previous one. The complexity of the mystery was similar and you do get some mild character development. I really enjoyed it. This is the kind of book you listen to when you want to feel good and you don't really want to strain yourself mentally or emotionally. Jayne is fun the rest of the characters are still interesting, with some new characters introduced to keep things from being dull. The setting is still lovely.
The narrator did a great job again. She did nice variety of voices and accents and the narration flowed well.
