Christian murder porn, but not that bad.

This is the story about an Evangelical reactionary killer who almost learns to be a good person. The author tells him engaging story, but his politics interwoven into the plot are laughable. I tried one of his books before and quit about 50 pages in. if you view the world as totally black and white, good and bad, you will like this book and this author by default. aside from having the politics of an 8-year-old, the author knows how to tell a story. The action is well-paced and engaging. The narration is so so. The narrator does not have a real broad spectrum of emotion. but that's to be expected because the characters themselves are fairly two dimensional. with that in mind, you have a good story with minimal characters. in hindsight, this assessment gives me a little more insight into the personality of the author.

Just a tad disappointed

I'm used to the author building a story over a long time. I'm not used to flimsy and predictable love/sex just thrown in to tie two characters. I'm used to the author pandering to the notion of the benevolent billionaire. I'm not used to it somehow justifying environmental ecocide for the benefit of one demographic. yes, it's just fiction - I get it. I'm also getting bored watching a great author trying to become the next Ayn Rand.

Utopia or dystopia, you decide.

Whatever you choose, this series is worth exploring. The characters are artfully blended (literally mixed for optimum effect in post-human society) to deliver a superior story. The characters and plots are so engaging that the apocalypse is almost inconsequential; although very well crafted.

Neal Stephenson is becoming a fav of mine.

This is some very detailed and heady sci-fi. When I started Reamde, I never could have guess this direction would be taken. I should have known given my experience with Seveneves. These books require patience, and patience is rewarded with skill of storytelling and ingenious plots.
I may just try to tackle his whole catalogue.

"this isn't Reagan's America..."

I'm pretty unimpressed. This is basically not a post EMP story as much as hardcore porn for ammosexuals. The author paints every character within his ideology as virtuous with all others as weak, insane, or depraved. Be warned, you will find out how vaccines contributed to the population control that was to be the fleecing of America. But there are brave men (and one or two women-most are homemakers tending to a crop of new freedom loving children) who are willing to kill deep state freedom hating liberal villains. This book sucked. Save your money.

This is primarily a romance novel set in an apocalyptic world. I really kick myself for using a credit to buy this. Fiction is supposed to suspend proper judgement, but this is stretching that too far. The narration is well read, but the Spanish woman (from Spain) sounds just like the chola that sat next to me in 10th grade. Where many of the characters fall flat in imagery, the love interests spring to life smelling of sage and sandalwood or whatever. This is perfect post apocalyptic fiction for girls aged 13.
