I've listened to and/or read the whole series 4 or 5 times now. I love it. Excellent story and characters! It's not perfect - there are tiny unimportant plot holes and errors that a halfway decent editor should have removed but overall this whole series is amazing. ♥️ Will definitely read and listen many more times!

I loved this book. I love this series! I like how healing is a main theme. I'm glad the characters I've grown to love were able to find themselves and grow in amazing ways. However, the gay relationship feels forced. He masterfully works or into the plot, sure, but only ONE side comment about one of the partners in thousands and thousands of words of prior character building even implies he might be gay. Idk like anything else stick with what you know. Also his writing overall has kind of become permanently more like Tress of the Emerald Sea or Mistborn arc 2 Than like The Way of Kings or Final empire. But I'll take it because he's a phenomenal storyteller. Other than these VERY minor gripes this book was phenomenal and I'll reread the series 10 times over before book so in 2033.

Good God this series is depressing but I can't stop reading it. I will not spoil it. I will say, you're going to feel very betrayed and want to throw your listening device across the room before you finish the last 2 chapters. Don't do it. Keep going. Just trust me.

I liked everything about this series and grew quite attached to the characters. Well done, Mr. Cobble. Unlike many series that just leave you wanting more, this series reached a natural and unforced conclusion. I like the symbolism and classical tropes used throughout the series but particularly in this one. Simon Vance was perfect for this series. Finishing my 4th read/listen thru the series and look forward to the next 4.

Love this Story & Love Eicewald

I love all that Eicewald teaches Lasgol in this book. I know some found it slow and boring, but I enjoyed it. For what it's worth, Ona would agree, as she is bored for most of the book. Camu is cute and makes me smile. It's nice that Lasgol FINALLY gets to train in his magic and has a kind and respectable tutor. I've read all these thru book 19, and all I'll say is that this is sadly a one time opportunity for Lasgol, and they're *really* going to need that magic soon in their adventures.

I love these books and will continue to read and listen to them as Ahren, Khara, Falk and company bring their story to a close. I do miss the original Narrator's deep rumbling Trogadon voice but this narrator is a soft and calming voice and he keeps the volume consistent. I know we don't like change but I'd still give it a chance.

I read this book the first time 10 years ago on a recommendation from a friend. I have the attention span of a gnat and she knows it, but she insisted that I would enjoy this story so I said, what the heck. I had no idea at the time that she read some abridged version so I picked up a copy of the whole shebang and was pleasantly surprised to find that she was right! I was drawn in right away, and Dumas is really an excellent storyteller. We had a good laugh about her 250-page copy and my 1000-or-something-page copy. But I loved it. Fast forward 10 or so years and I have a 16-year-old whom I homeschool and I was thinking we needed to add some classic literature to our daily car rides hither and thither. I grabbed the first "Count of Monte Cristo" I could find on Audible and decided to just start playing it to see if she got into the story as quickly as I did. It was a success; she definitely did! Over the next few months, we listened to The Count of Monte Cristo whenever we were in the car. It sparked a lot of good discussions, including my being impressed at Bill Homewood's French pronunciation. I don't read well in moderation, so I ended up picking up my Kindle copy and "reading ahead." Love this story!! This narrator does read all the numbers in french. You can get it from context, but just so you know you will hear about Emperor Napoleon and Louis 'dix-huit' (XVIII) . Didn't bother me any since I took French in school, and the story is mostly set in France so it made sense to me but that might bother some anglophones.

*****Potential Spoilers*****
In my house, we use "Titanic" as a verb. Here is what I mean: With the 90s movie Titanic, I am known for watching right up until just before the tragic character death, then turning it off and saying "Annnnd, Jack and Rose were rescued and lived happily ever after!" Now, I have seen this movie all the way through several times, and I know what happens. But I didn't just spend 2 hours of my life growing attached to these characters only to watch them die. And I don't want to be sad. So, I take the part of the story I like at face value and ignore the rest. Perhaps this method isn't for everyone. My Mother in Law loves Hallmark movies, and more power to her! But I don't like sad stories. There is enough sadness in real life if you ask me! Back to Dumas - I love, love, LOVE the 3 Musketeers series. The Characters are great, and I grew very attached to them. All I will say about the end of this series is that I have to find a stopping point somewhere near the middle/end of Man in the Iron Mask, so I can Titanic it. I was absolutely devastated by the end of this book. I couldn't listen to it narrated for whatever reason so I ended up reading it... and oh, my GOD I was actually crying! I was sad for like an hour after!!! Dumas didn't do anything wrong and there was closure, but... ouch. This hit hard. Instead of finding something else to read, however, I immediately re-started the whole story from the beginning - I put on the 3 Musketeers, where D'Artagnan, my beloved Athos, Porthos, and Aramis are alive, well, and young. I am catching a lot more this go around. However, I promise you that I am going to "Titanic" it next time I listen to this one!!!!!

Great First Half of Story, Narration is Different

Total
5 out of 5 stars

4 out of 5 stars
Historia
5 out of 5 stars

Revisado: 07-16-22

I like this book - it is really a "part 1 of 2" as Book 6 "The Siege of Macindaw" is a direct continuation of the story. If you are reading the series in order, in book 4 Will and Horace still had a few years left as Apprentices. They are now around 4 years in the future and Will is now a full Ranger, newly assigned to quiet Seacliff Fief. He acquires a dog, we learn he plays the Mandola, and he is sent on an undercover mission to Northgate Fief, more than a week's ride from Redmont or Seacliff on the Pictish Border, to investigate a mysterious death and alleged sorcery. The 'good guys' and 'bad guys' in this story aren't who you might initially think they are, and nothing is as it seems in this winding tale.
The narration is a bit off-kilter for this one, but it's not intolerable. Blinder makes some odd pronunciation choices in his narration, but overall it wasn't enough to take away from the story. For book 6, the remainder of this story, and the rest of the series going forward, John Keating returns and narrates in the same fashion as we are used to from books 1-4.
