Historia
In the grand storytelling style that is his signature, James Michener sweeps us back through time to the very beginnings of the Jewish faith, thousands of years ago. Through the predecessors of four modern men and women, we experience the entire colorful history of the Jews, including the life of the early Hebrews and their persecutions, the impact of Christianity, the Crusades, and the Spanish Inquisition, all the way to the founding of present-day Israel and the Middle East conflict.

Horrible Performance
Revisado: 09-17-16
This is one time I wish I would have listened to the preview and read the reviews more carefully before purchasing. The performance was so bad I quit after two chapters. What a disappointment.

Great Story Gone Awry
Revisado: 10-11-15
After reading critical reviews of this book I had high hopes for a great listen. Well, I'm almost a month into this and I still have 23 1/2 listening hours to the end of the audio book. It's so loaded down with technical stuff about the space station and the "cloud" it has bored me to death. I quit. What a waste of a credit. Also, I think they could have picked someone better to read the book. Having listened to many audio books, I have discovered a great reader can make a not-so-good book better. Unlike this book I am going to keep it short and sweet: not enough character development, more action, way less minutiae, better narrator. Very disappointed.

Historia
When Barry Fairweather dies unexpectedly in his early 40s, the little town of Pagford is left in shock. Pagford is, seemingly, an English idyll, with a cobbled market square and an ancient abbey, but what lies behind the pretty façade is a town at war. Rich at war with poor, teenagers at war with their parents, wives at war with their husbands, teachers at war with their pupils.... Pagford is not what it at first seems. And the empty seat left by Barry on the town's council soon becomes the catalyst for the biggest war the town has yet seen.

Boring....A Book About Nothing
Revisado: 10-02-12
Ok, I quit. I got about a quarter of the way in before I couldn't stand the boredom anymore. The person who performed the book is just fine. Too bad he didn't have a better story to work with. In my opinion it's a book about nothing. Too many characters makes it confusing, too much minutia (the nothing)and the story advances too slow for my taste. I actually spent money on this.Disappointing.

Historia
On an entirely normal, beautiful fall day in Chester's Mill, Maine, the town is inexplicably and suddenly sealed off from the rest of the world by an invisible force field. Planes crash into it and fall from the sky in flaming wreckage, a gardener's hand is severed as "the dome" comes down on it, people running errands in the neighboring town are divided from their families, and cars explode on impact. No one can fathom what this barrier is, where it came from, and when - or if - it will go away.

Enjoyed the book but....
Revisado: 12-23-09
it's not as good as "The Stand" in my opinion. Too long though it did hold my attention enough to get to the end - thanks to Raul Esparza. What I didn't like about this book: Republican/Conservative = bad, Democrat/Progressive = good, CNN = good, Fox = bad, Christians = bad/fat/crazy people, U.S. Military = bad people who torture (and don't forget about global warming and nukes).I don't like that broad brush Mr. King paints certain groups with. It's been a long time since I read a Stephen King book. It will be a long time before I read another one.

Something is rotten in the state of Wisconsin
Revisado: 10-27-08
I read such stellar reviews about this book in a book magazine that I just had to listen to what they considered almost a classic. I was sorely disappointed. Since it was supposed to be based on Hamlet I knew this story would not turn out well and the one thing I surely didn't expect from such a critically acclaimed book was for it to be so boring. The only part that truly moved me was the chapter from Almondine's perspective near the end of the book hence the two stars instead of one. I made it to the end but it was a struggle.

Revisado: 04-24-08
I liked this book but yet was disappointed. Reading other reviews one in particular stuck in my mind and I agree with it. I don't like people like Rose in real life and I didn't like this character. I couldn't understand how she could do those things to the most important people in her life. And, I couldn't understand how the people around Rose could love a person like her so much when she offered so little emotionally to them. I may have missed the point (am not sure if I got it or not) but they were all liars in one way or another so I guess they could overlook this. I was waiting for some kind of revelation to Cecelia at the end of the book and was disappointed when her father just kind of left. I felt I was left hanging by the "sign from God" explanation - I just didn't get it.

Too Much Information
Revisado: 12-10-07
Exhaustive is the key word here. This is my first Margaret George book and I mostly enjoyed it but I could have done with a little less detail as I started to lose interest in places. But, will try another of hers in the future.

A Disappointment
Revisado: 09-25-07
The only words that come to mind when I think about this book (at least so far) is self absorbed. I'm just at the end of Italy and so far it's been one big groan. Maybe it's because I don't identify with the author as I am not divorced, childless or depressed. Though I have not lived in Italy, I have visited there and didn't quite see it the same way as the author. I'm trying to decide if I can finish this book. At this point the not finishing it is winning.

Lovely Story
Revisado: 08-21-07
Quite enjoyed this book except, unlike some of the other reviewers, I did not like the voice or the accent of the person that read it. I found it hard to understand her at times and her voice was not easy on the ears. I almost gave up on this book because of it. I'm glad I didn't.

Not a Favorite
Revisado: 06-27-07
I have read two other books by this author and liked both. I wish I could say the same about this one. It was somewhat interesting which was why I gave it 3 stars but I have to say that most of the time I didn't care much about these people. I would have rather had more main story and less individual character development/personal stories. The only reason I stuck this one out to the end was because I had paid for it.
