Memorable and Nostalgic
Revisado: 05-05-25
This was either the first or second series I ever binge read—like, had to be called to dinner multiple times, stayed up late, did nothing besides read, that kind of experience. It was a delight to “re-read” them in audiobook form as an adult. The humor and jokes had me cackling. And it’s a warm, pleasant read overall; The Crimson Crown was the most detailed of the series, and built the foundation for the Shattered Realms novels, which I never did get around to finishing… no time like the present, or near-present.
The performance was fantastic. Voices were distinct and I loved that Crow actually sounded a bit like a Crow, like there was a squawk to the voice used for him. I think the voices captured the personalities and backgrounds of characters very well.

Dubbed the American Tolkien by Time magazine, George R. R. Martin has earned international acclaim for his monumental cycle of epic fantasy. Now the number-one New York Times best-selling author delivers the fifth book in his spellbinding landmark series - as both familiar faces and surprising new forces vie for a foothold in a fragmented empire.

A Great Re-Read, Thanks to Roy Dotrice and the Audiobook Format!
Revisado: 04-20-25
I would never have time to re-read the books at this stage of my life. I listened to them almost consecutively, with one non-fiction book between at some point, and it was such a pleasant experience. I appreciate the seeming shift in Arya’s voice over time, and Dotrice uses the same, like, voice and accent combination for both Tyrion and Kevan. The regional accents, Westermen vs Northerners vs the Dornish, is distinct enough for me to be happy. And in regards to the writing… Martin is fantastic, of course. Dance suffers from an awkward start in comparison to the other books. The previous books have chapters that seem to exclusively be ordered chronologically, whereas Dance has to mix its timeline with Feast. And it just feels weird. He’s also in a logistical tangle it seems. I’m not sure where events need to start and how certain theories/show plot lines would work out, or at least the ones we know could still work in the books. The set up for Winds and Dream makes the set up for A Storm of Swords look like child’s play. Perhaps they had to be written together and entirely planned out together to deliver a conclusion Martin is satisfied with… I trust his judgment on it. But also lol. I will also note, as an adult, I lived Cersei’s chapters. I binge read all five books in less than three months when I was 14, and I loathed Cersei’s PoV, but I get it now. We get to experience her descent into madness and it’s kind of like… schadenfreude. I still kind of can’t stand how delusional she is, but it’s funny this time around. In a similar vein, I didn’t like Sansa because I never forgave her for her daydream-y, innocent views of life as a noble lady. But as an adult, I can really see how she has grown fast and is being forged into someone made of true steel. And even though I’d rather we see Rickon as lord of Winterfell and have a Stannis and the North vs Dany and the South situation, and then have Sansa as lady of the Vale with the Vale acting as the tiebreaker in battle… she feels she would be strongest in Winterfell. And I can see it becoming her seat of power. Re-reading these books and seeing the characters from a different, older perspective shifted not only my perception characters, but also my understanding of the plot, fan theories, and show adaptation. And it being an audiobook made it easy!

Mastery Over Shifting Perspectives
Revisado: 07-28-24
This is another example of Tamora Pierce’s delightful writing. The full cast team contributed to the joy of listening to a book I read multiple times as a teen. I wish we could see more of the Circle of Magic universe, but it’s bad for you to get everything you want, right? ;)

Historia
This riveting narrative explores the lives of six remarkable female pharaohs, from Hatshepsut to Cleopatra - women who ruled with real power - and shines a piercing light on our own perceptions of women in power today. Female rulers are a rare phenomenon - but thousands of years ago in ancient Egypt, women reigned supreme. But throughout human history, women in positions of power were more often used as political pawns in a male-dominated society. What was so special about ancient Egypt that provided women this kind of access to the highest political office?

A Wonderful Analysis
Revisado: 04-26-24
… but at times it feels far-fetched. I am no Egyptologist and I have a very limited archaeological background, but there are many times where the attempt to humanize these queens sounds like projection. We have so little evidence for some that I question how they have full chapters in this book. But that does unearth them and makes them more than footnotes in history, which I appreciate. Comparing the ancient world to modern times, especially when it concerns misogyny and women in power, is something I wish we did more. I wish more people understood how little progress we have made, and how so many parallels can be drawn between the relatively distant past and the present. Personally, though, I could have done with fewer Hillary Clinton comparisons (but, also, this work is a product of its time— 2018, when 2016 was fresher in everyone’s mind).

Historia
In the Dream House is Carmen Maria Machado's engrossing and wildly innovative account of a relationship gone bad, and a bold dissection of the mechanisms and cultural representations of psychological abuse. Tracing the full arc of a harrowing relationship with a charismatic but volatile woman, Machado struggles to make sense of how what happened to her shaped the person she was becoming. And it's that struggle that gives the book its original structure: each chapter is driven by its own narrative trope - the haunted house, erotica, the bildungsroman....

There Truly is Commonality in Abuse
Revisado: 03-08-24
It is engaging and eloquent. I think anyone previously or currently in an abusive relationship can relate to or identify with this work. There are things I recognized from a cishet relationship I had, things that I could have written myself (with much less research intertwined). This is a literary work. The shape of the narrative is well-crafted. I am resisting looking up the ex, since I know she likely completed her MFA at Iowa and graduated a year or two after Machado.
There are things that I got from hearing this in the writer’s voice that I would not have gotten from a narrator, I think.
I’m sorry for what you went through, Carmen.

Sappy, Vivid, and Fun
Revisado: 02-10-24
This is the first time I’ve ever listened to a SJMaas book before reading it. House of Flame and Shadow was a beautiful ending for the Crescent City series. It had some SJMaas tropes, and if you’ve read her other series you’ll notice them. I can’t wait for the next series; let me hear from Aelin again!! This book was satisfying, though there are a couple slow areas in the first and second parts… which encourages binge-reading, because you know you’re about to hit the good stuff. I’m overjoyed by the final chapters. There are some loose ends, but that makes room for the next series (whatever comes after this and ACOSF) or other future series. SJM, why haven’t you given us a short story collection with multiple viewpoints across these worlds, along with characters whose stories don’t have a place in an established world in the SJM-verse?
I look forward to whatever comes next!
Sincerely,
A fan since just before Crown of Midnight’s release… who also bought the Celaena short stories when they were only available digitally <3

Rewarding
Revisado: 04-18-21
I started this series five years ago, and read the first three books traditionally, in print. It’s the first series I’ve ever listened to in its entirety. Though I feel that a different route could have been taken with Keris and that the death she dealt out was unnecessary, I’m at peace with the series. The death makes narrative sense in hindsight, and Tahir, as always, rewards her readers.
Wonderful performances from all of the voice actors, all my love to McEwan’s Helene.
