Historia
The struggle between Rome and Carthage in the Punic Wars was arguably the greatest and most desperate conflict of antiquity. The forces involved and the casualties suffered by both sides were far greater than in any wars fought before the modern era, while the eventual outcome had far-reaching consequences for the history of the Western World, namely the ascendancy of Rome. An epic of war and battle, this is also the story of famous generals and leaders: Hannibal, Fabius Maximus, Scipio Africanus, and his grandson Scipio Aemilianus, who would finally bring down the walls of Carthage.

Goldsworthy and Perkins can't be beat
Revisado: 07-12-22
Unlike the Carthaginians, Adrian Goldsworthy's writings and Derek Perkins' performance can't be beat. I knew very little about the Punic wars going in, and now feel I have a better understanding of not just the wars but how Rome became the dominant power in the ancient Mediterranean world.

In the newest installment of the best-selling series Mythos, legendary author and actor Stephen Fry moves from the exploits of the Olympian gods to the deeds of mortal heroes. Perseus. Jason. Whether recounting a tender love affair or a heroic triumph, Fry deftly finds resonance with our own modern minds and hearts.

Don't listen to this!...
Revisado: 03-26-22
...Until you've listened to Mythos, Stephen Fry's first work in the Greek Myths and Legends collection. I whole heartedly recommend all three books in the series to anyone with a sliver of interest in these old tales.
In Mythos, Fry reimagines and reorganizes the ancient Greek tales of the beginnings of time through to Titans, God's and the dawn of man.
In Heroes, we pick up where we left off and hear the legends of Greece's greatest heroes: Perseus, Heracles, Theseus to name a few.
And while the book was written well, giving insight and humor in equal measure, I feel Fry's performance in the audiobook truly make the stories come to life. These tales were originally an oral tradition after all!

Historia
This volume celebrates six such languages - Ancient Greek, Latin, Old English, Sanskrit, Old Irish, and Biblical Hebrew - by first introducing listeners to their most distinctive features, then showing how these linguistic traits play out in short excerpts from actual ancient texts. It explores, for instance, how Homer's Greek shows signs of oral composition, how Horace achieves striking poetic effects through interlaced word order in his Latin, and how the poet of Beowulf attains remarkable intensity of expression through the resources of Old English.

Enjoyable for lovers of linguistics
Revisado: 02-09-22
I found this book fascinating. The author goes through Ancient Greek, Latin, Old English, Sanskrit, Old Irish and Hebrew giving examples of what makes each language unique.
There are some parts that get tedious like when dictionaries of words or word forms are read. I think these sections lend themselves better to print than in audio form but on the whole it didn't detract enough for me to stop listening.
The flip side is that it is nice having the narrator pronounce the words which can be difficult to tell strictly from reading.
All in all I would recommend this book to all English speakers who want to know more about these languages and language in general.

The Mongol army led by Genghis Khan subjugated more lands and people in 25 years than the Romans did in 400. In nearly every country the Mongols conquered, they brought an unprecedented rise in cultural communication, expanded trade, and a blossoming of civilization.

Informative read about the Mongols
Revisado: 02-04-21
I knew hardly anything about Genghis Khan or the Mongol empire and, to me, this was a fascinating read/listen. It explored the parents of Genghis, his rise to empire, his successors and the ultimate legacy and impact of that conquest on the world at large. I found it very enjoyable and thought provoking and would recommend.

Historia
It was a moment unique in human history: the face-to-face meeting between two men from civilizations a world apart. In 1519, Hernán Cortés arrived on the shores of Mexico, determined not only to expand the Spanish empire but to convert the natives to Catholicism and carry off a fortune in gold. That he saw nothing paradoxical in his intentions is one of the most remarkable and tragic aspects of this unforgettable story.

Historia
Two men, each handsome and unusually adept at his chosen work, embodied an element of the great dynamic that characterized America’s rush toward the twentieth century. The architect was Daniel Hudson Burnham, the fair’s brilliant director of works and the builder of many of the country’s most important structures, including the Flatiron Building in New York and Union Station in Washington, D.C. The murderer was Henry H. Holmes, a young doctor who, in a malign parody of the White City, built his “World’s Fair Hotel” just west of the fairgrounds.

Fascinating read but a few production hiccups
Revisado: 06-08-18
The story was fascinating, the reader's voice was good but quirks in production should be fixed. For example, the last 10 secs of chapter 171 and the begining of chapter 172 are the same sentence. This was confusing to me as the listener, I thought I'd accidently rewinded. Unfortunately, this instance is only the first of several throughout the tape.
Another thing I did not like about the production is that it divides the book into 263 chapters when I believe it could have been grouped into far fewer sections. This critique is more personal preference than actual problem.
Other then that, I would definitely recommend for all fans of (American) history and true crime.
