North, south, east, and west: almost all societies use these four cardinal directions to orientate themselves and to understand who they are by projecting where they are. For millennia, these four directions have been foundational to our travel, navigation, and exploration, and are central to the imaginative, moral, and political geography of virtually every culture in the world. Yet they are far more subjective—and sometimes contradictory—than we might realize. Four Points of the Compass leads us on a journey of directional discovery.

Last two chapters- MUST LISTEN TO
Revisado: 04-11-25
Most of the book was pretty dry, but well written and very well read. BUT- the last two chapters were real eye openers for anyone living in the USA.
It’s also very contemporary with the news of today.

Boring story compared to othersg
Revisado: 01-30-25
From 5th grade on, I was/am a fan of almost everything Ms. Norton (or other writers using her Pen Name) created. This book is one of the few I did NOT enjoy. Actually, I could not finish.
Somehow I didn’t notice this book existed. Once I bought it and started listening, there was no way I could even finish it.

Boring and Formulaic
Revisado: 12-31-24
This was more of a drudge to finish than the first one. The characters were shallow and the story was simply a romp through simple problems after problems with mundane solutions. I won’t purchase any more in the series.

Historia
1914: As America’s century of dominance dawns, the country’s greatest detective, Van Dorn agent Isaac Bell, is pitted against a master thief and his assassin accomplice. They’re plotting to pull off the greatest heist in America’s history: the theft of a billion dollars from the newly created Federal Reserve. When an aerial attack is launched against Woodrow Wilson’s yacht during a meeting among the Federal Reserve’s branch leaders, Bell thwarts it, only to find that the strike was just the opening of an even deadlier gambit.

Revisado: 12-18-24
Clive Cussler would be quite pleased knowing that Isaac Bell is in good hands.
Bell, along with the Fargos, have been my favorite Cussler characters. “The Heist” was a rollicking great listen that I really enjoyed.
And, Scott Brick just keeps getting better and better with multiple accents.

Historia
Mush Morton was a warrior without peer. At the helm of the USS Wahoo he completely changed the way the submarines fought in the Pacific War. He would relentlessly attack the Japanese at every opportunity, burning through his supply of torpedoes in record time on every patrol. Over the course of only nine months and five patrols, Morton racked up an astounding list of achievements, including being the first American skipper to wipe out an entire enemy convoy single-handedly.

Great Personal Info About Key Personnel- Not Overly “Techie” About The Gato Boats, Like Wahoo
Revisado: 07-04-24
Excellent listen. I basically binged my way through. The content and reading kept the tale going- even through the few slow spots toward the end. This is not a new title. But, it dispenses with the military pomp and hoopla. It gets to the story from page one.
Wahoo, Mush Morton and your crew, You are on Permanent Patrol in the once again troubled waters near Japan. I can only hope your memory and memorials remind us how frail humans are in the face of terrible technologies, able to kill more efficiently and faster. Your Gato boat was such a technology in your day that we might learn from today.

Historia
Michael Crichton, creator of Jurassic Park, ER, Twister, and Westworld, had a passion project he’d been pursuing for years, ahead of his untimely passing in 2008. Knowing how special it was, his wife, Sherri Crichton, held back his notes and the partial manuscript until she found the right author to complete it: James Patterson, the world’s most popular storyteller.

Yet One More Binge Reading Crichton Experience
Revisado: 07-02-24
This was an excellent gut grabbing story in the vein of Prey, Micro, Next and State of Fear. The well researched background and likable, if larger than life, characters were always Crichton trademarks.
Patterson polished a few edges and seamlessly completed this novel. And hey, Scott Brick is Scott Brick. That means A+ story telling.
The next movie anyone?

Historia
In Other Minds, Peter Godfrey-Smith, a distinguished philosopher of science and a skilled scuba diver, tells a bold new story of how subjective experience crept into being—how nature became aware of itself. As Godfrey-Smith stresses, it is a story that largely occurs in the ocean, where animals first appeared.

Unless you are way more of a science geek than I am, the middle chapters are only for committed philosophers and brain scientists.
But- if you listen to the “Book End” chapters you will experience s great tour of the hypotheses of mental development for all animals. Mixed throughout and summarized at the end are the implications for the Octopus and other cephalopods.

Worth Binge Listening To All Three Books- I did.
Revisado: 04-27-24
Having listened to all the Ex Force novels at least twice, I needed another similar story to tie me over until #17 comes out.
WOW- I’m now more interested in when Convergence #4 will be released. Yes, it has many things in common with the Ex Force novels, but without the arcane, ultra silly and redundant behavior of Skippy. This series has talking animals and a Genie. But, they are more palatable than a Silver Beer Can and the goofy banter between Bishop and said Beer Can.
We also get to hear more of RC speaking in his own voice, as he did in The Martian.
I would highly recommend the series, whether or not the listener is an Ex Force fan.
These are three books I’ll bet most listeners will want to binge listen, as I did.

For years, the ancient alien AI known as Skippy (the Magnificent, don’t forget that part) has been able to do one impossible thing after another. What is his secret? It’s simple: 100 percent Grade-A extreme awesomeness. And also because he had never been faced with an opponent of equal power. Until now. This time, he might need a little help from a band of filthy monkeys.

RC Bray The Magnificent- story was great too
Revisado: 04-06-24
It seems that most of the titles I buy have either RC Bray or Scott Brick as narrators. Do these guys ever sleep?
Back to business-this title fits in well with the overall arc of the series. It wasn’t the best, but it was close.
Expedition Force readers won’t want to miss it.
FYI- I tried reading this book. Forget it. RC Bray adds to much value not to listen.
Still to many F-bombs and scatorial language.

My history re-read, 50 years later.
Revisado: 03-19-24
I read almost all of Heinlein’s tales 50- some years ago. These, along with stories from Norton, Asimov, Verne, Burroughs, and Wells actually shaped much of who I am.
While Star-man Jones was not the best, it is an excellent coming of age story for young Max, in the future of space travel. But the problems could just as well be told today, in the wild west, or the future of this book.
It starts slow but gains pace up to the end.
I’m glad I started with these older stories. I bet you will enjoy them again too.
