Historia
In a sprawling mansion filled with peculiar treasures, January Scaller is a curiosity herself. As the ward of the wealthy Mr. Locke, she feels little different from the artifacts that decorate the halls: carefully maintained, largely ignored, and utterly out of place. Then she finds a strange book. A book that carries the scent of other worlds and tells a tale of secret doors, of love, adventure, and danger. Each page turn reveals impossible truths about the world, and January discovers a story increasingly entwined with her own.

Bland writing and bad narration
Revisado: 08-28-21
Doors to other worlds. We understand the premise. Should we dedicate 75% of the first 4 hours educating the reader on how the door system works? 4 hours in there is at least a 30 minute soliloquy on how doors work by a man (voiced in monotone by a woman) where I had to tap out. Seemed like story told in first person by two different characters which made it confusing. Listen to this narrator and then compare to Steven Pacey or Scott Brick and then tell me how this person was paid to read and record a book.

Historia
Piranesi lives in the House. Perhaps he always has. In his notebooks, day after day, he makes a clear and careful record of its wonders: the labyrinth of halls, the thousands upon thousands of statues, the tides that thunder up staircases, the clouds that move in slow procession through the upper halls. On Tuesdays and Fridays Piranesi sees his friend, the Other. At other times he brings tributes of food to the Dead. But mostly, he is alone.

Slow but worthwhile
Revisado: 06-27-21
Clarke takes us to another world…again.
It takes around 2 hours to get this story moving, and never goes very quickly. But, it is immersive and the magic is believable.
I found myself in Piranesi’s shoes, wondering how I would act at each stage of the story, and the self inspection was interesting.

Historia
At first, only a few things are known about the celestial object that astronomers dub Rama. It is huge, weighing more than ten trillion tons. And it is hurtling through the solar system at inconceivable speed. Then a space probe confirms the unthinkable: Rama is no natural object. It is, incredibly, an interstellar spacecraft. Space explorers and planet-bound scientists alike prepare for mankind's first encounter with alien intelligence.

Monotone performance with antiquated story
Revisado: 02-24-19
The size and scope of Rama are still relevant. This clearly comes across as a work that was ahead of its time. But, much has been redone in countless more recent stories and movies. This makes it less breathtaking.
I’m not sure if it was intentional, but frequently The narrator sounds like a text-to-speech bot droning without feeling or inflection. When he rarely does character dialogue he is good...but this story has almost no dialogue.
If you can get this at a discount it’s worthwhile...but I wouldn’t spend a full credit on it.

The Muad'Dib's jihad is in full swing. His warrior legions march from victory to victory. But beneath the joy of victory there are dangerous undercurrents. Paul, like nearly every great conqueror, has enemies - those who would betray him to steal the awesome power he commands. Paul himself begins to have doubts: Is the jihad getting out of his control? Has he created anarchy? Has he been betrayed by those he loves and trusts the most? And most of all, he wonders: Am I going mad?

Flashbacks filling in history
Revisado: 05-20-17
This feels like a history lesson in the Dune universe. While there are some characters you like to hear from again, the details become a little exhausting. And at the end the overall plot doesn't seem to have advanced much. But, true to the title, you get to know Paul.

A wonderful prequel
Revisado: 02-15-17
I had planned to skip the prequels and go straight to Dune. A friend recommended I at least read the "House" prequels. I'm so glad he did; this book was fantastic. I would say the politics and court intrigues make this somewhat of a sci-fi Game of Thrones. The narrator handles the different characters well. His portrayal of the Harkonnens is especially convincing. I can't wait to read the next prequel.
