Historia
It’s a beautiful day in Newport, Rhode Island, when Phoebe Stone arrives at the grand Cornwall Inn wearing a green dress and gold heels, not a bag in sight, alone. She's immediately mistaken by everyone in the lobby for one of the wedding people, but she’s actually the only guest at the Cornwall who isn’t here for the big event. Phoebe is here because she’s dreamed of coming for years—she hoped to shuck oysters and take sunset sails with her husband, only now she’s here without him, at rock bottom, and determined to have one last decadent splurge on herself.

Started out thinking it was morose. So glad I kept going. It’s like a coming-of-age for middle-aged women ends on an exultant note.

Mediocre
Revisado: 05-28-24
Not one of her best, however the narration is so bad that it makes it hard to tell. This fellow needs to bag the acting and just read aloud. I am a long time and ardent fan of the author, but this was a waste of a credit.

Outstandint naration of an excellent novel. A very creative story line, and nice nostalgic references to our lives in the '60s.

Masterful
Revisado: 06-17-23
Jodi Picoult is the grand miss tress of character development, and nearly always in the context of life’s thorniest issues. This story creates such empathy for the main characters that you could weep.

Ruined a Good Story

So frustrating to be caught up in a good story but have to put up with dreadful narration. I’m reminded of listening to a painfully bad student reading aloud back in my school days.

Historia
Augustus Everett is an acclaimed author of literary fiction. January Andrews writes best-selling romance. When she pens a happily ever after, he kills off his entire cast. They’re polar opposites. In fact, the only thing they have in common is that for the next three months, they're living in neighboring beach houses, broke, and bogged down with writer's block.

Historia
It’s 1927, and the most devastating flood in American history has swelled the Mississippi River to a width of eighty miles. In an attempt to save a family trapped by the rising water, four men in a tiny rowboat battle the treacherous flow: three are convicts, on loan from the local prison and pressed into service; the fourth, the leader of the team, is driven by his own hidden motives. But to their surprise upon arrival at Ballymore, an ancestral home protected by a high, circular levee, not everyone in the family feels the need to be saved.

Historia
Billy Todd has always been different. Most people called him odd, and those were the nice people. Though he was born with a learning disability, Billy's parents never allowed him to consider himself disabled. Raised to be self-sufficient, Billy might not be as smart as some, but he was a lot smarter than people realized.

Preppers' Book of Planning
Revisado: 04-01-23
Well, this was certainly different. I had just reread Stephen King's, The Stand, when I picked this one up. The motif is very similar, but where King's post apocalyptic protagonists are level headed realists, this story's are obsessive-compulsive. Apparently so is the author. This story is pretty well written but very broken up by actual lists of everything one needs to feed and protect the family in the event of almost total annihilation, the main theme of which is weaponry. The AR15 gets special notice, but there must be twenty or more kinds of guns mentioned. For me, that's not only uninteresting, but off-putting.
