As a educator, I can't count the number of times a parent has said, "You talk to him; he'll listen to you." It is generally accepted as fact that parents cannot effectively communicate with their children during the difficult teen years. As someone who has studied the neuroscience and psychology of teen development, I know that this belief is wrong. The problem lies in a lack of understanding of how teens think, what types of parenting work best, and what form of communication is appropriate. This book gets it right and should be read by any parent whose child is in or about to enter the teen years. Emphasizing active listening and respectful interactions, the book helps the listener forge a trustful bond with the teen and learn how to discuss everyday topics, minefield topics such as sex and drugs, and everything in between.

Biohacking, as the author explains, leverages scientific knowledge about sleep mechanisms and institutes behavioral changes to take advantage of that science. These changes are clearly presented and well organized. Helpfully, the author focuses on changes to your bedroom first (colors, aromas, etc.)--you don't even have to change behaviors to see early results, which will then inspire you to keep listening and implement the recommended behavioral changes too. These changes include mindfulness, crafting a personal and consistent bedtime routine, dealing with nightmares and other sleep interruptions, proper nutrition (both what and when), and much more.

Guided meditation is a wonderful way to center yourself, and using manifestations can be a powerful tool to change your outlook and create a more satisfying version of yourself. I appreciate this book on several levels. The serene narration and music are wonderful aids to finding a lovely relaxation and receptive state. The guided meditations are grouped by different topics, so you can use whatever topic might be most pressing on a particular day. For example, you may want to visualize your future self or find a greater self confidence, just to name two. I also like that there are two morning meditations (short and long) and three "subliminal manifestation accelerators" of different lengths. Inner peace and higher wisdom are at hand.

This is such a cool book. Rather than write about 24 specific games, plays, or players, this author takes a broader and fascinating approach with topics such as "Baseball in the Civil War," "Deals to Remember: The Most Significant Trades," "Baseball and Gambling," "Strange Baseball Traditions," and the like. Of course, great players are part of the stories, and three get their own chapters: Robinson, Ruth, and Clemente. The book is well-researched, filled with interest facts and trivia. It is lovingly written and narrated.

I have long fantasied about preserving foods, especially when I have lots of in-season produce that I cannot possiblee eat fast enough. Until I picked up this book, however, I imagined that the process would be too complicated. It turns out that a bit of easy-to-understand science and a list of basic tools are all that are needed to get started. Yes, there are things you need to keep track of--such as choice of fermentation ingredients, temperature, sealing, and more--and precision is important, but the author explains the processes with clarity and in accessibly small bits of information. The book covers plenty of foods, so if you think preservation involves only jams, pickles, and sauerkraut, you'll be delighted to learn that these are just the beginning.

It's easy to say "I have a great idea" and dive right in (guilty as charged), but success requires thought and attention to the many details explained in this book.
