What started as a joyous reunion of friends, soon became one of the most challenging periods of their lives. Chosen as scouts for the Kuccuntikka village of the Shoshone for their trek to the grand encampment of the Shoshone, their encounter with the scouts from the Tukkutikka band would set them on a different course altogether.

Narration great, except ...
Revisado: 07-07-23
The only think that made me a little crazy about the narration was the continual mispronunciation of Pend Oreille (pronounced Ponderay) and Kootenai (pronounced Kootenay, not Kootin eye.) When you've grown up in the midst of these tribes/areas, it sorta sets your teeth on edge. Otherwise, the narrator was great. The story is lightweight but entertaining listening.

Historia
The spring of 1824 is a challenging one for the inhabitants of Paradise N.Y. when a flood devastates the village. But for Nathaniel and Elizabeth Bonner, it’s also a time of reunion as their children return from far-off places: Lily and her husband from Italy, and Martha Kirby, the Bonners’ ward, from Manhattan. Although Lily is nursing her own grief, it is Martha, fleeing a crushing humiliation, who brings with her trouble that will reverberate in all their lives.

Wonderful end to an epic series
Revisado: 12-03-22
Seldom have I enjoyed a series more. Beginning with Into the Wilderness, the stories of the Bonner family during the infancy of America in upstate New York, as well as other places they journey to, imparted much historical insight through the eyes and lives of wonderfully complex and interesting characters. Mohican, English, American, French, British, Creole, Slaves and Free People of Color are well represented in a very well researched and personable manner.
I have been listening to audio books for a long time, in fact I tend to still call them books on tape! The narrator, of all the books, I am happy to say, is Kate Reading and she is a rare gem. All the characters are distinct and separate as individuals due to her wonderful ability with accents, an astounding range of consistent voices, and the ability to speak through yawns, sighs and sarcasm, etc. when required. Whether through great direction or her own reading ahead to find the upcoming choices of inflection needed, I don't know, but it really brings this series alive.
Great historical series, don't miss it.

warm memories
Revisado: 10-09-21
I originally read this book when I was 12 or 13, (I am no 60) enjoying it from time to time over the years. I am so delighted to find it, not only back in print (I have cherished my battered old copy) but in audiobook. Now if Audible would just release the 2 sequels by the same authors!
The story is well written, with realistic views and vocabulary of the times. It will make you laugh at and cry, and for me, I felt I was in the far Northwest of Canada in the infancy of the 1900s. A great read and a classic.

Texas, 1921. A time of abundance. The Great War is over, the bounty of the land is plentiful, and America is on the brink of a new and optimistic era. But for Elsa Wolcott, deemed too old to marry in a time when marriage is a woman’s only option, the future seems bleak. Until the night she meets Rafe Martinelli. By 1934, the world has changed; millions are out of work and drought has devastated the Great Plains. Elsa must make an agonizing choice: fight for the land she loves or leave it behind and go west, to California, in search of a better life for her family.

A wonderful her-story
Revisado: 08-15-21
The history offered up, in this book, told through the eyes of a realistic woman, I feel, is long been missing in the context of America. I love that the central character is far from a bigger than life heroine, but a quietly strong woman that through hardship, finds her voice. Ms. Hannah's depiction of the dust bowl left me with a gritty feel between my teeth it was so real and I really took to heart the despair and injustice to the Oakie migrant workers in my heart. Excellent story, fabulous narration, and a surprise ending, what more can you wish for? Hint: this book needs tissues but it is a wonderful story of humanity.

Entertaining
Revisado: 05-13-21
I've listened to this entire series many times and found most of the stories entertaining and fun. This particular story kept me guessing until the very end, but then the story was rushed into a wrap up that showed the true culprit and what might happen to them and Darcy and Georgie going off hand in hand, all in about 7 minutes.
The narrator is very good at keeping all the characters voices separate and believable, she just has this habit of finishing sentences with a forced upward lilt that can become annoying, if you let it. She does this in all the books, but her ability to make several voices of different characters believable and consistent offsets the habit.
All in all, this is worth the listen more than once.

Historia
Years before the Great War summoned Bess Crawford to serve as a battlefield nurse, the indomitable heroine spent her childhood in India under the watchful eye of her friend and confidant, the young soldier Simon Brandon. The two formed an inseparable bond on the dangerous Northwest Frontier where her father’s Regiment held the Khyber Pass against all intruders. It was Simon who taught Bess to ride and shoot, escorted her to the bazaars and the Maharani’s Palace, and did his best to keep her out of trouble.

An easy, laid back listen.
Revisado: 02-18-21
I thoroughly enjoyed this dystopia book. It's so nice to listen to a more uplifting story, especially in our current culture of anger, pandemic and political nastiness from both sides of the aisle. Because it isn't as gritty and dark as most "end of the world " stories, this book gives you hope for people as the general rule. Hardly any cursing, only vague allusions to sex (except a single, very sanitized encounter) and a hopeful ending. My only request, don't write a sequel, this story is complete and satisfying.

Where is John McDonough?
Revisado: 07-05-20
I have loved the Mitford series long before there was no recordings of them (gasps! Yes I actually read a book with pages) and this story doesn't disappoint...
except in the narration. Dana Ivey is an excellent narrator with a voice that is easy to listen to and excels in bringing different characters to life, but she isn't the voice of Father Tim and all the folks in Mitford, that voice belongs to John McDonough. He narrates all the other unabridged books in the Mitford series and then, when we finally get to hear about the great anticipated wedding between Cynthia and Father Tim - WHAM - a woman narrator appears! What a great disappointment! I may have to try to get thru it because the story is probably great, but again, what a disappoint.

Very simple
Revisado: 05-14-20
While I admire and applaud this couple's strength and amazing ability to tackle the PCT, the written story of their trek is simple and often repetitive in places. It almost seems as if it was written for pre-teens.
