Historia
War in Cuba isn't Ben Tyler's concern. Still, sailing mares and guns into Havana harbor in 1898 - right past the submerged wreckage of the U.S. battleship Maine - may not be the smartest thing the recently prison-sprung horse wrangler ever did. Neither is shooting one of the local Guardia, though the pompous peacock deserved it. Now Tyler's sitting tight in a vermin-infested Cuban stockade waiting to face a firing squad....

These books are peppered with anachronism, but the heart of the series is true. And the engine that drives the stories thrums as strong as ever.

Historia
Parker, the ruthless antihero of Richard Stark's eponymous mystery novels, is one of the most unforgettable characters in hardboiled noir. Lauded by critics for his taut realism, unapologetic amorality, and razor-sharp prose-style, Stark is a master of crime writing, his books as influential as any in the genre. Parker goes under the knife in The Man with the Getaway Face, changing his face to escape the mob and a contract on his life. Along the way he scores his biggest heist yet.

Parker gets real
Revisado: 07-23-23
Westlake must've had some idea what an incredible character he had on his hands by the time he got to work on the second book. While the "new face" stuff seems a little goofy now, the depth with which he infuses the character of Parker builds a foundation for what will prove to be one of the greatest series of all time.
PS (The treatment of women depicted herein is obviously reprehensible. It harkens back to a darker day, and is best treated as cartoon noir, unforgivable, but integral to the darkness of the story.)

Historia
You probably haven't noticed them. But they've noticed you. They notice everything. That's their job. Sitting quietly in a nondescript car outside a bank making note of the tellers' work habits. Lagging a few car lengths behind the Brinks truck on its daily rounds. Surreptitiously jiggling the handle of an unmarked service door at the racetrack. They're heisters.

So funny to think that when Donald Westlake wrote this book, he thought he was just writing an experimental one-off. He had no idea that he was beginning the greatest series in crime fiction of all time.

As a devoted son, as a passionate husband, and above all as a father, Chabon's memories of childhood, of his parents' marriage and divorce, of moments of painful adolescent comedy and giddy encounters with the popular art and literature of his own youth, are like a theme played by the mad quartet of which he now finds himself co-conductor. At once dazzling, hilarious, and moving, Manhood for Amateurs is destined to become a classic.

I’m so glad Christopher Harris refuses to stay in his lane. He does many things well, but none better than writing novels.
This is a beautifully written peek into the grueling life of an athlete.
