Amazing Story, Amazing Narration

J.K. Rowling advances and develops the characters (Harry and his friends are 16-17 now). She advances the plot of the overall series while creating a standalone book, like creating 1/7 of a tapestry that can be admired for itself or as part of a huge tapestry. I’m in awe of the amount of work and attention to detail that required.
I had to laugh when I read some other reviews. Jim Dale is a man. How would he read the parts of teenage girls and sound like one? Yet, he manages to read the parts in such a way that we always know what character is speaking. The narration is amazing, it’s not reasonable to expect a grown man to sound exactly like a teenaged girl. And a reviewer stated that Jim Dale had mispronounced words. That never happened.

First of all, Jim Dale was the perfect choice to make the audible book.
J. K. Rowling’s story telling brilliance shines through on so many levels here. 15 year old boys do have trouble controlling their behavior when feeling emotional, and so does Harry. There is often, in the real world, bad things happening from several sources, and Harry must deal with Voldemort and his evil, of course, but also with the evil from some petty and power hungry jerks from the ministry of magic, as well as the resentments that Snape will never conquer towards Harry’s father and godfather. And romance is often a distraction to a fifteen year old…

a little knowledge is a dangerous thing. So this book has some can't-just-ignore bonehead errors that detract from the story. She had to find surgical gloves to handle the plutonium? And the sad ignorance about Islam as the story is built around Arab/Muslim characters.??? And a few other sorry plot holes...and, yet, the plot moves nicely, the characters are familiar and nice. I like this series.

Heidi, the classic

This is the classic so many of us read, and reread, growing up. It was one of the shapers of my dreams and character, because I spent so much time reading it, and then laying in bed dreaming about her, even before I went to sleep.
I think little girls benefit from this kind of book. It takes them to new places and situations safely, and stays there when they are 9, 11, 13, which is important at a time when the inevitable changes in their lives can feel overwhelming. It even taught me the fact that books can be so much better then movies, because when I saw the travesty of a movie my love of books was affirmed and renewed and refreshed.
If I reviewed this as an adult reviewing this for adults I would be missing the point. There are about thirty books about which I would say the same thing.
This book is one of the finest stories for young people ever written.

Full of Cold War, Cuba/Red China's/Russia Commie CIA Backdrop, a somehow almost believable lady in her 60s volunteers to be a spy. How cool is that?
This narrator is the best one I've had in the last ten books I've heard.

The book is great, I guess everyone knows that already. The narration is very good, the lady seems to be enjoying reading the book, which is important when children are the main listeners.

This has turned out to be the best audio-only language instruction I've found so far, and I've wasted some money in the process. The whole course is over 9 hours, and covers everything from a-b-c to verb forms to idiomatic cliches. Expect to spend a lot of review time, because practice, practice, practice is the basis for any language learning. Don't believe the "learn a language in 30 minutes" people. If it were that easy everyone would speak many languages. This course is set out systematically, and the speakers go slowly enough that I could usually follow the first time. I reviewed every unit at least twice, some of the harder ones I did on both the morning and night commute for a full week. At the end I find I can assist my teenager in her second year high school Spanish!
Whatever I choose for my next course will include some printed material. There were a few times I could have either heard a word spelled or been able to see it in print. But for a course for an absolute beginner, this one lays a firm foundation and a great value.
