The prompt seemed simple: Race. Your Story. Six Words. Please Send. The answers, though, have been challenging and complicated. In the twelve years since award-winning journalist Michele Norris first posed that question, over half a million people have submitted their stories to The Race Card Project inbox. The stories are shocking in their depth and candor, spanning the full spectrum of race, ethnicity, identity, and class. Even at just six words, the micro-essays can pack quite a punch, revealing, fear, pain, triumph, and sometimes humor.

Powerful Voices
Revisado: 12-14-24
This audiobook was more enjoyable and informative than I expected. I loved the many voices of the cast of readers. I had never heard of the Race Card Project and now I’m deeply interested. This is an audiobook I would listen to again but I also want a hard copy for my hands and heart to hold.

Historia
Black education was a subversive act from its inception. African Americans pursued education through clandestine means, often in defiance of law and custom, even under threat of violence. They developed what Jarvis Givens calls a tradition of "fugitive pedagogy"—a theory and practice of Black education in America. The enslaved learned to read in spite of widespread prohibitions; newly emancipated people braved the dangers of integrating all-White schools and the hardships of building Black schools.

I had been hearing about this book for a few years by various people. I knew it was one that I would need to read, not just from my pedagogical lens but also from my Black woman’s lens. This book is more than what I expected. I found myself wishing I had the hard copy to highlight and annotate.

The Genius of Stevie
Revisado: 09-18-24
What a beautiful and loving gift this is to humanity. I learned more about the genius of Stevie while also basking in memories from his music. I loved hearing former President Obama and First Lady Michelle sharing conversations with him. This is a collection of stories and music to savor forever! When is the next one coming? I’m ready!

Historia
The New York Times Magazine’s award-winning “1619 Project” issue reframed our understanding of American history by placing slavery and its continuing legacy at the center of our national narrative. This new book substantially expands on that work, weaving together 18 essays that explore the legacy of slavery in present-day America with 36 poems and works of fiction that illuminate key moments of oppression, struggle, and resistance.

A must-read and must-listen to book!
Revisado: 03-30-23
I wanted to read this but decided to listen first and I’m so glad I did. There is greater impact listening to the various readers and their special contributions to this work. The history lessons and poetry are compelling! If you don’t know the true stories of African and Black people in America, you must read or listen to this book. I want a hard copy to keep for generations after me.

Historia
There may be no tidy solutions or pithy answers to life’s big challenges, but Michelle Obama believes that we can all locate and lean on a set of tools to help us better navigate change and remain steady within flux. In The Light We Carry, she opens a frank and honest dialogue with listeners, considering the questions many of us wrestle with: How do we build enduring and honest relationships? How can we discover strength and community inside our differences? What tools do we use to address feelings of self-doubt or helplessness? What do we do when it all starts to feel like too much?

Historia
What would it be like to live in a well-rested world? Far too many of us have claimed productivity as the cornerstone of success. Brainwashed by capitalism, we subject our bodies and minds to work at an unrealistic, damaging, and machine‑level pace—feeding into the same engine that enslaved millions into brutal labor for its own relentless benefit. In Rest Is Resistance, Tricia Hersey, aka the Nap Bishop, casts an illuminating light on our troubled relationship with rest and how to imagine and dream our way to a future where rest is exalted.

Revisado: 02-03-23
I want to read the hard copy of this book, because I know that there are many golden nuggets of wisdom that I need to highlight and savor. I’ve learned a lot about why we hustle and grind, push ourselves to the limit, and I do not want to participate in that type of capitalistic behavior anymore! Thank you, Tricia Hersey, for this work and for your ministry you are a blessing.

I love the quotes mixed in with each chapter, the guiding questions that help me to reflect, and the accompanying PDF. This is a lifelong work that every human must do. Listening to Brené is like being in therapy with a close friend.

In my book, you will meet a little girl named Viola who ran from her past until she made a life-changing decision to stop running forever. This is the path I took to finding my purpose but also my voice in a world that didn’t always see me.

I should’ve read the book!
Revisado: 12-11-21
I am a huge fan of Gabrielle Union as an actress and activist. I should not have listened to the book. I needed to read this for myself to hear my own voice in her stories. Her reading felt forced and sounded too much like a dramatic performance. I would’ve preferred it if she read more casually and not so much like an actress on stage. The stories I enjoyed was the one about racism, the one about gender identity, and the best part was the story about women talking about the issues of menopause.
This is a well written book that needs to be read but not listened to.
