Historia
Fledgling, Octavia E. Butler's final novel, is the story of a young amnesiac girl whose inhuman needs and abilities lead her to a startling conclusion: she is in fact a genetically modified 53-year-old vampire. Forced to discover what she can about her stolen former life, she must learn who wanted to destroy her and those she cares for and how she can save herself.

Needs a trigger warning.

The narrator had me fully engaged in this story. and I LOOOOVE Octavia Butler. I'll read anything she was involved in. That being said, I couldn't finish this book. Got a few chapters in and had to put it down. I tried, I really did. The story is so well written and so imaginative (classic Octavia). But the sex was too much. WAY too much. I understand that the main character is a full grown, middle aged being in human years, but her body looks like a small, prepubescent child, as explained by her first symbiote before he had explicit sex with her anyways. I know theres SO more to the story than that, but apparently there winds up being even more human adults in a symbiotic relationship with her, that she compensates with sex in exchange for their blood. Whole time they start out thinking they're sexing a small child? I can't. This book needs a trigger warning.

This book was worth zero stars. I feel bad typing that, but I'd hate for anyone else to waste their money, credit or time on it. Many of the jokes weren't even jokes. They were simple facts that began with "Knock-Knock". My children (7 and 9) love knock-knock jokes and limericks, and laugh at anything. They'd laugh if the sun came up. Didn't laugh at this though. They begged me to turn it off after it was clear that there wasn't going to be anything remotely humorous in this audiobook. I liked the narrator's pleasant voice, so I held out in the hopes that it would deliver what was promised, but I gave in after about 8 minutes. We turned it off and put on NPR. When 7 and 9 year olds would rather hear world news from NPR, than listen to jokes...you know there was nothing funny about the jokes.
