A work of art

I rarely read fiction but I found this via podcast hosts who raved about it.
The characters were so beautifully defined - not in a flowery, verbose way, but in a Hemingway-ish kind of economical way. And they're flawed and beautiful and there's no judgement.
The story is deeply satisfying - I wanted it to keep going but the ending was fulfilling enough now that I don't have that longing I sometimes do when good books end.
It was a ride!
The narrator's voice took me a bit to get used to, not sounding authentic to me for the first couple of hours, but I imagined it being narrated by Sheldon's brother Georgie and that got me loving his voice.
Worth every single minute of anxiety, pity, second hand guilt, discomfort, hope. It was a spectacular read.

There is so much juice in here and it's so satisfying. I loved the wisdom of the end, the ride home. Love love love!
I think someone at Elgin was asleep at the wheel though. Words were used incorrectly at times which should have been picked up. It didn't interfere with the story, just made me protective of the author who should have been able to hand this over to proofreaders and editors to perfect.

I love stories. I have mostly told other people's, but now, in telling my own, I realise how all our stories are connected by that great leveller of acclaim, loss, fortitude and fortune: being human. When I look at my life from the alleged halfway point, some patterns are revealed: one, that the story does not necessarily begin or end where it should; two, happy endings are overrated. And three, happy endings are almost never the end. This book is memoir-ish. A tell-most. Largely because there's a lot I don't remember, and a lot that's not worth talking about.

This is a beautifully written (and performed, of course) book. I just loved every mouthful.
My favourite part was Henry's birth, when Minnie said "Thank god YOU'RE here." I was very touched.

Give yourself some credit as a parent. This is what your mum used to do. I got through chapter 2 and decided I just couldn't do it any more. It's 2016! We're smarter and kinder than this.
