Historia
All Auric Cain ever wanted was a chance. A chance to prove himself. A chance to take control of his life. A chance to be more than a lowly D-Tier, the lowest of the low, in a world broken by the arrival of an alien, enigmatic being known as The System.

This story wasn’t internally consistent
Revisado: 09-02-22
I found myself yelling at Auric several times throughout this story. Why would he not become trigger happy with his Purge ability - shooting first and asking questions later? Why hasn’t it occurred to him that his parents may have not agreed with his ‘grandmother’? Why does any A tier entering battle result in massive collateral damage, except for any time Auric is involved?
I get that leveling your tier resets your progress, but if level 30 is peak, wouldn’t a A-15 still be able to hold their own against a B-30? Honestly, I found the levels and tiers to be irrelevant filler in this book. Auric didn’t seem particularly stronger, and certainly no more durable when he got to A than he was at D. He entered gates that scaled everything up to his level, and yet both his sister and Cyprian were merely challenged with foes at his much higher rank.
I may read further to see if this gets any better, but this wasn’t a particularly impressive introduction.

Historia
Theodore and his cousin Rickey inherited their aunt's flower shop, Starflowers. They decide to run and improve it with their families' financial support. Starflowers gives Theodore's life meaning after a depressing breakup. Focusing on work is easy when he's absolutely sure there's no space for a man in his life. If he did allow for a boyfriend, it would be someone boring and everyday. Someone unlike the exotic Attila. He'd have a cubicle job, wear a cheap suit, and drive a Kia.

Fun and well worth listening to
Revisado: 02-12-17
What did you love best about Lucky Starflowers?
Sam is a semi-professional gambler who cross-dresses as Samantha to try to keep ahead of casino security, but has been accused of counting cards a few too many times for the local casinos to allow him (and her) through their doors. When he gets mugged and robbed after his latest escort off of a casino premises, he decides to travel to warmer climes. That decision gets him as far as Pittsburgh where circumstances lead him to meet up with floral shop owners Theo and his cousin Ricky.
Theo and Ricky open their arms to help Sam out and Sam & Theo feel an almost instant connection. This connection is strained from the beginning by Theo's history which has jaded him against all relationships, but most especially those with guys who are exciting. Added to that, Sam has no interest in spending any length of time more than necessary to heal & get out to a more "civilized" place. Then, on top of everything else, Theo doesn't quite know how he feels about the cross-dressing and comes up with some truly funny things to worry about because of it.
But, in the two weeks that lead to Valentine's Day, Theo and Sam come to rely on one another more and more, and they realize that what they thought they wanted at the beginning of the story isn't what they need.
I thought that this book was very well written and plotted. My one pet peeve is that I wanted to smack both Sam and Theo upside the head throughout most of the book (along with pretty much everyone in Theo's family) just out of sheer frustration that the two of them refused to actually talk to one another. There were a couple of times that I felt that this was more plot device than actual, realistic reactions to circumstances.
What does Kevin Chandler bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
Kevin Chandler did an excellent job narrating the characters in this book. Each one had a distinct voice without having distracting, fake, accents. He created a light, sarcastic Theo; a terse, somewhat guarded Sam; a sultry Samantha; and a jocular Ricky - along with all of the sundry supporting characters.

Good story, but inconsistent
Revisado: 08-10-16
Any additional comments?
I liked this story for most of the book, with no concerns, but at the end, it felt like Ms. Sanders lost focus. I didn't understand why Cassie reacted so vehemently to Luke telling her about his plans. Her, and the rest of the businesses on the boardwalk, never had an issue with a hotel being built on the island, their issue was that Luke's father was trying to buy up the property that their businesses were already on. Additionally, Luke says that he has no idea how his father found out about the plans even though he very specifically sent out press releases to several media outlets "up and down the coast" to make his plans of building a hotel public as a means to cut the legs out from under his father. There were also several times when someone would bring up a point in conversation that would be like waving a red flag in front of any normal person, but the characters seems to be oddly oblivious.

Everything was awesome
Revisado: 08-05-16
I'm not sure if I can express how much I enjoyed Michael Lesley's performance of this book; it was excellent! With TJ Klune's hilarious banter I never wanted this book to end.
I hadn't read anything by TJ prior to this, but based on how much fun this book was, I've already bought all of the other audiobooks that he had available and several others that Michael Lesley had narrated.

Historia
Frederick is a demon. Born in Maryland in the early 1980's, he hasn't a clue where he came from or why, but feels an irresistible desire to occupy a human body. Once inside, he finds the previous occupants' consciousness and memories forever erased, an inevitable side effect that gives Frederick pause when switching bodies, but not so much as to truly halt his ongoing enjoyment of human lives. In various bodies, he travels the world for decades - aimless - sampling cultures and experiencing life from the points of view of males, females, young, old, rich, poor.

I honestly don't know how I feel about this book now that I've finished it. The storytelling was captivating and the twists in the plot were intriguing but I didn't actually like either Frederick or Samuel.

I've enjoyed listening to reach of the Matt Turner books, but this one hit the ball out of the park! I loved that Matt has come into his own in this book only to get a shock in the end that has me salivating for more.

Pretty good
Revisado: 04-06-16
I thought that the idea behind this had a lot of promise and the overall story was good. I did feel like the pacing was slow through the middle of the book, but it might just be world-building for the rest of the series.
