The Longest Con tells the fascinating story of the partisan con artists who have corrupted conservative politics in our time, creating a toxic phenomenon that culminated in the election of Donald Trump, a bumptious fraud whose checkered career and tawdry retinue, including his presidential cabinet, have featured almost every variety of scam. But long before he appeared, Trump's path to power was blazed by the motley horde of swindlers and quacks who preceded him.

Infuriating and accurate.

Draws a direct line through various Right Wing and Evangelical grifters from the days of highly coveted mailing lists to the modern age of spam emails.
The consistency and similarity of these scam artists is less surprising than it is enraging, seeing them all lined up though history here. Well researched and very well structured, this book gives a clear picture of the grifting economy that continues with our current political leaders.

Historia
Award-winning journalist and CNN correspondent Elle Reeve was not surprised by the insurrection at the Capitol on January 6, 2021. With years of in-depth research and on-the-ground investigative reporting under her belt, Reeve was aware of the preoccupations of the online far right and their journey from the computer to QAnon, militias, and racist groups. At the same time, Reeve saw a parallel growth of counterforces, with citizen vigilantes using new tools and tactics to take down the far right.

Fantastic, terrifying book.
Revisado: 07-30-24
With both first person experience and extensive research, this book lays out the toxic yet all too human process that led from a bunch of isolated, edgy teens to a violent coup, and our current struggle against Right Wing fascism, giving insight on both the roots and ideas behind the movement.
This book documents the lies and mental gymnastics required to claim and promulgate these abhorrent beliefs, and the oddly nihilist culture of validation-at-any-cost narcissism that fuels these spirals.
At once fascinating and horrifying, definitely a recommended read for anyone trying to understand how we got here.

Historia
On a cold day in March of 1911, officials marched twelve Black men into the heart of a forest in Maryland. Under the supervision of a doctor, the men were forced to clear the land, pour cement, lay bricks, and harvest tobacco. When construction finished, they became the first twelve patients of the state’s Hospital for the Negro Insane. For centuries, Black patients have been absent from our history books. Madness transports listeners behind the brick walls of a Jim Crow asylum. In Madness, journalist Antonia Hylton tells the 93-year-old history of Crownsville Hospital.

In the early 20th century, business elites, trade associations, wealthy powerbrokers, and media allies set out to build a new American orthodoxy: down with 'big government' and up with unfettered markets. With startling archival evidence, Oreskes and Conway document campaigns to rewrite textbooks, combat unions, and defend child labor.

We are familiar with maps that outline all 50 states. And we are also familiar with the idea that the United States is an "empire", exercising power around the world. But what about the actual territories - the islands, atolls, and archipelagos - this country has governed and inhabited? In How to Hide an Empire, author Daniel Immerwahr tells the fascinating story of the United States outside the United States. In crackling, fast-paced prose, he reveals forgotten episodes that cast American history in a new light.

Historia
At the height of the John Birch Society’s activity in the 1960s, critics dismissed its members as a paranoid fringe. After all, “Birchers” believed that a vast communist conspiracy existed in America and posed an existential threat to Christianity, capitalism, and freedom. But as historian Matthew Dallek reveals, the Birch Society’s extremism remade American conservatism. Most Birchers were white professionals who were radicalized as growing calls for racial and gender equality appeared to upend American life.

Everything old is new again.
Revisado: 10-07-23
In this fairly exhaustive but accessible history, common themes that once coalesced around pro-slavery and anti-immigrant forces are shown as a through line leading to the founding of the JBS, and how that influence continues today.
Many recognizable ideas, even word for word arguments and slogans, that dot our current political media landscape are unpacked here from their genesis. Fascinating, if morbid.
Easy to understand, interesting in both tone and content, and well read, this book is highly recommended for anyone interested in the subject.

Historia
In Far-Right Vanguard, John Huntington shows how, for almost a century, the far right has forced so-called "respectable" conservatives to grapple with their concerns, thereby intensifying right-wing thought and forecasting the trajectory of American politics. Ultraconservatives of the 20th century were the vanguard of modern conservatism as it exists in the Republican Party of today.

Everything old is new again, as this book shows the progression of the Conservative movement through the lens of Far Right political power and messaging.
From “State’s Rights” to “anti-Communism” to anti-integration to the culture wars, this book lays out the long tail of Far Right influence and demagoguery,
Dense and immaculately researched, it can be a bit overwhelming at times, but it is also concise in its evidence, and very well built to stay on theme.
A must-read for anyone struggling with the current moment, to understand that this has always been here.

Comprehensive and accessible.
Revisado: 06-29-23
The Cult of Trump lies at the confluence of many toxic threads through social, cultural, and political forces. Understand the fundamentals of cults themselves can help add perspective to these interactions.
When lesser cults - white supremacists, militia groups, isolated rural voters, 2A groups, RW media consumers, etc - coalesce around a malignant narcissist to form a metacult, it can feel like the whole world has gone crazy.
But understanding the mechanisms and tactics can help both in the prevention and dismantling of cult formation. This book is invaluable in breaking down these mechanics, and how to deal with them.

An unmatched guide to the religious dimensions of American politics, Jeff Sharlet journeys into corners of our national psyche where others fear to tread. The Undertow is both inquiry and meditation, an attempt to understand how, over the last decade, reaction has morphed into delusion, social division into distrust, distrust into paranoia, and hatred into fantasies—sometimes realities—of violence.

A Complex Throughline
Revisado: 05-27-23
While it may take a moment to feel the connection between these essays, the portrait that emerges is more poetic than polemic.
There are myriad hard narratives about what is going on in this moment, and this is a welcome respite, an examination of the roots of our disagreements through a very human lens.
Neither apologia nor hagiography, the truths themselves are still hard, no punches are pulled, it is a work, though, that brims with heart. And that sets it apart.
Well worth the read.
