Historia
If there's one thing seventeen-year-old Maverick Carter knows, it's that a real man takes care of his family. As the son of a former gang legend, Mav does that the only way he knows how: dealing for the King Lords. With this money he can help his mom, who works two jobs while his dad's in prison. Life's not perfect, but with a fly girlfriend and a cousin who always has his back, Mav's got everything under control. Until, that is, Maverick finds out he's a father. But it's not so easy to sling dope, finish school, and raise a child.

compelling
Revisado: 10-06-24
I was going to give this story a 4 star as it felt like the ending was unfinished until I looked it up and it's actually a prequel. the voice acting was impeccable.
the story was compelling, several times I paused because I knew what was coming and couldn't bear it. Maverick feels like a real person who reacts as a 16/17 year old probably would. I followed hoping he would get his happy ending and now I have to get the hate u give to find out.

Amazing voice acting and story
Revisado: 07-29-24
I absolutely loved the voice acting, especially the different voices used for each character. the story starts off slow but has good world building and leaves me wanting more. the last 8 or so chapters had me on the edge of my seat.

The history of colonial America is a story of extraordinary scope, with Europeans, Africans, and the native peoples of North America interacting in a drama of settlement and conflict that lasted nearly three centuries. Go back in time and relive this epic story in 36 spellbinding lectures. While concentrating on British North America, Professor Allison also covers developments in the colonial outposts of Spain, France, the Netherlands, and the all-important British possessions in the West Indies, which were the source of the most lucrative crop in the New World - sugar - and the reason for the enormous growth in the slave trade.

I thought I knew a lot about the American Revolution. I was wrong. there was so much. He gave all that lead up into the revolution. He made it feel very interesting, so much a lot of times I wanted to stay and hear more about things before he moved on to the next part.

Historia
The effects of the Italian Renaissance are still with us today, from the incomparable paintings of Leonardo da Vinci to the immortal writings of Petrarch and Machiavelli. But why was there such an artistic, cultural, and intellectual explosion in Italy at the start of the 14th century? Why did it occur in Italy? And why in certain Italian city-states such as Florence? Professor Bartlett probes these questions and more in 36 dynamic lectures.

Comprehensive view of the Reinessance
Revisado: 02-28-22
I really enjoyed listening to this. It really felt like a great lecture. I hate both when someone can't look past their own views to at least attempt to be objective as well as when someone is so objective they sound like a textbook. This was the perfect sweet spot between those. If you want to learn about the subject and also how it effects everyone today I highly recommend it.

Great Steampunk
Revisado: 08-01-21
I'm always on the market for a good steampunk story, they are sadly lacking, but I was not at all disappointed in this. I've never seen a story where bugs play such a big role, though I've seen a few with giant bugs. The world feels fleshed out and I love it. Saskia Maarleveld did a great job narrating, using different voices for everyone helped keep it straight who was speaking and made them feel more alive.

Myths provide the keys to truly grasping the ways that principles, rituals, codes, and taboos are woven into the fabric of a particular society or civilization. It's through myths that we can answer these and other fundamental questions: How was the universe created, and why? What is the purpose of evil? Why is society organized the way it is? How did natural features like rivers, mountains, and oceans emerge? This entertaining and illuminating course plunges you into the world's greatest myths.

Insightful storytelling
Revisado: 06-03-21
Listening to this I never felt like I was learning, not because I wasn't but it never felt like I was being thrown information. in a lot of ways it felt like he was just talking to a group of people instead of a lecture. Maybe it is because of the myths themselves but he always managed to make it feel natural. I also love that he treated all myths equally, he didn't put some as allegorical and others as true, I never felt like he was condescending for the more ancient myths and he treated stories of ancient Greece, ancient Egypt, Buddhist, Christian etc all equally.

Prince Liam. Prince Frederic. Prince Duncan. Prince Gustav. You've never heard of them, have you? These are the princes who saved Sleeping Beauty, Cinderella, Snow White, and Rapunzel, respectively, and yet, thanks to those lousy bards who wrote the tales, you likely know them only as Prince Charming. But all of this is about to change.

Fun Twist on Old Tales
Revisado: 05-25-21
First the performance, I absolutely loved all the different voices and accents, his range is amazing. Every character, including the narrator, had their own voice and accent, especially when considering that people from the same Kingdom will have similiar accents it becomes fun to try to guess what kingdom they are from.
The story is one of the most interesting takes on fairytales I've seen. instead of just being a retelling with a modern twist this focuses on making the stories real people. I fully believed each character and what they did and never found myself wondering why a character did something. Especially viewing the princes from the last chapter to how they were introduced they had so much character development and all got a chance to shine.
I also like how they didn't focus just on relationships, it showed a whole range which is rare to see if romance is even thought of.
Anyone who likes fairytales or adventurous mideval tales-think kid friendly Lord of the Rings-will like this book.

Comprehensive
Revisado: 03-25-21
My actual review I wanted to title Comprehensive View of the Common People from Neanderthals to Middle Ages. That is how I'd best describe it. Virtually everyone who history forgets; poor, infirmed, enslaved, women, children to a certain extent, is covered with what we know about them. It was an interesting look at how the common people lived, people who normally are only remembered by how the rich and powerful interacted with them, but instead their the main point of the lecture and the powerful are only there to give context to the time period. Anyone who has an interest in history anywhere between the dawn of man and up to the middle ages basically that wants to know how the average person lived, instead of the rich nobles and kings and pharaohs, would be delighted in this lecture.

Eating is an indispensable human activity. As a result, whether we realize it or not, the drive to obtain food has been a major catalyst across all of history, from prehistoric times to the present. Epicure Jean-Anthelme Brillat-Savarin said it best: "Gastronomy governs the whole life of man."

Everything you could want to know about food
Revisado: 01-06-21
I didn't know how this course would be but was intrigued to find out something so crucial to everyday life of the history I love. This course went through everything from what it is possible cavemen ate to the trends of today. He didn't only show what was being ate but differences of how it was ate. How fashions in food-fancy, seasoned, fresh, etc-changed and what brought about the change. Like how spices of all kinds used to be in everything but now besides pepper most cooking has spices only in desserts being from spices becoming cheap so now good taste was not to over season food. I also like that though I couldn't see it, hearing him make up recipes and how open he was to food. He took the view people like different things and didn't go by "they ate this because they had to" for anything that didn't sound good to us. Anyone who is at all interested in food history in particular or just the basics of how people lived will really like this course.

As raiders and explorers, the Vikings played a decisive role in the formation of Latin Christendom, and particularly of western Europe. Now, in a series of 36 vivid lectures by an honored teacher and classical scholar, you have the opportunity to understand this remarkable race as never before, studying the Vikings not only as warriors, but in all of the other roles in which they were equally extraordinary - merchants, artists, kings, raiders, seafarers, shipbuilders, and creators of a remarkable literature of myths and sagas.

well informed overview
Revisado: 10-30-20
I really enjoyed this course but I should warn anyone that wants just to hear about Vikings and doesn't care about others. This course covers the entirty of the Viking Age, but it also is before said age and after as well as what was happening among other people that effected it. It was more about the political intrigue than I thought would happen and less about how the average Vikings lived, fought or believed. I love hearing all about history and this was a time and focus I normally don't study so I enjoyed it but I dont think someone who just wants to know more about Vikings would unless their interested in their politics both in small sources and as a larger whole. The professor did more than what he set out to do, he was always engaging and didn't bring in too many of his own biases, keeping it mostly just factual but he'd give his own theories and his favorites of the time which made it feel more human for lack of a better word.
