Let me be clear. I love the story line, plots, different character Arcs and the variety of relationships this series has to offer, but certain things about how it’s written, is personally irritating and off-putting to me. The author seems like she goes out of her way to scream from the rooftops that she’s woke. Making sure she is representing everyone.

This isn’t a bad thing at all, and I am not homophobic or bigoted in anyway, however it’s the way she does it, or how it’s written that is bothersome.

It’s not subtle. It’s overly saturated, which becomes irritating after the 5th book and takes away from the plot. I lose the emotion when I have to go back and try to remember which race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, and pronoun someone goes by within the same book.

If you are going to represent a non-binary character. Do so. But make your main character or supporting character one. Don’t make it a character we never meet, that adds nothing to the plot and continue to reference them and their pronoun or race for the sheer purpose of announcing you’re woke. Once a character is introduced, we don’t need to continue to reference them by color or pronoun continuously, especially when they have nothing to do with anything in the plot. If a character has a mom and a “parent”. Introduce them as so, and then refer to them as parents. The non-binary parent is also a person. Parent isn’t their identity, and for such a little reference roll they played in the book, we could have gone without constantly being reminded of where they fall in the alphabet. We get it.

It comes off as the author checking off her alphabet checklist, instead of being genuine.

Another thing that is even more grating, which exacerbated the initial annoyance over the loud over-representation, is that every character introduced whether main or minuscule, is for the most part, only described by their race. “An angry white woman” “a cute black woman” “a white dude”. As if their entire identity is wrapped up in skin color.

Is it so much to ask that that characters have characteristic traits and identifiers other than or in addition to skin color? What emotions and depth did their eyes evoke when looked into? What was the slope of their nose? The suppleness of their lips? These are the descriptions that are more important than skin color. I am not suggesting there weren’t other descriptions given, but they seemed an afterthought or a rushed add on to the initial “a white man with red hair” Again, checking boxes.

My only other critic is that personally I feel like they end abruptly. They finally get together and it’s “end scene”. I’d really love to see an epilogue. Other than these things, I really did enjoy this whole series and the narrators were amazing. So if you aren’t a little ocd about repetitive things, you’ll really enjoy it.

I have a love hate relationship with this series. I wanted more grit from the Gator Bait men, and a few books in the middle of this series lacked the what we all know LLV is capable of creating. I am so happy that the last 3 books really picked up and finished strong. The only thing that I wish this book had was more spice. But the story was so good that it didn’t detract from its quality, just made me want more! Also, the last two books are the only two in this series that the narrators, both male and female did excellent.

The chemistry in this book is what I’ve been craving in this series! By far the best of this series. Loved it.

I really thought that this series was going to be better. I always liked that the female and male leads are a little flawed, but as someone with MS who actually has some of the symptoms described, it was a little depressing. I really miss the quality and depth of early OG LLV. Because of those early series, ill buy anything LLV writes, but for the love of good bring back that Free Bird, Dixie Warden, Simple Man, and even Battle Crow Energy.

Also, the narration of this series is not good. Either the female isn’t good or the male isn’t good. In this one the female did a good job of sounding like she was constantly exhausted and in pain with a silent illness. Again, as I relate with MS, it made me tense up whenever she narrated, so I guess she actually did an amazing job.

The male narrator on the other hand sounded like he was in his late 60s and not in a Zaddy kind of way, and did this weird thing and made his voice 3 octaves higher when doing other male characters voices. Like, why would Wake, the leader of the MC have a high pitched voice? Where the hell is Mason Llyod and Joe Arden?

Great start to a new series! I love that it was a little longer than the last few and had a much stronger storyline. The only critique I have is with the narration, specifically the male. They both did a great job, but they make the characters sound a lot older.

Book two in this series really killed me. The angst and tragic love is really portrayed in the amazing performance from these two artists. The collaboration on this series from Huss and McClain is genius.

Love the story and narrative, but I have a huge pet peeve is when the author forgets or confuses the names from past books. Like Sarina(antagonist) instead of Storm (protagonist) for a whole scene which is really annoying and also, switching up the name of Tracy’s wife, to Vicky instead of Jordan. Vicky was her co-worker, not her wife in the second book. Otherwise, solid book.
