I couldn’t get past the 3rd chapter. Too many names. Too much info dump. That stuff is easier to consume a little at a time.

I first learned of this book when I picked Akashic books to study in a grad school course about small publishers. It was years before I actually read it, and Samuel L. Jackson reading it is absolutely perfect.

If Agatha Christi and Vladimir Nabokov had collaborated on a story, it might have sounded something like this. When I started listening to this story, I was put off by James Cameron Stewart's flat reading of the early chapters. However, now that I've listened to the whole thing, I understand why he did it that way. Overall, it's an intricate story that requires a lot of dexterity and acting ability to do well. Steward does accomplish the task, and opening the way he did makes sense because it's the start of a game in which the initial player has no idea what's happening. Those first chapters show the actions of a man with no memory and no understanding of the rules of the game he's playing. I doubt many actors could have pulled off this story--set in a Victorian era house with the attendant manners and the complex social structure surrounding the aristocratic guests and their servants. The story is a chess game of sorts, with the characters playing the parts of the various pieces on a chess board. The author hints at the chessboard analogy throughout the telling of the story, and deftly scatters red herrings and side plots to keep readers guessing to the very last sentence.

I love the author's rich, descriptive language. My sole criticism is that the climax was too abrupt and the denouement tied every detail up too neatly.

The narrator was superb. He brought this story vibrantly to life. I read the books years ago, but having them read to me was a differs experience.

This "book" does not belong on audible. The mispronunciations are dreadful, and the reader is so distracting that it is impossible to follow what he is reading.

John Lee's odd humming reading style killed this story for me entirely. His various foreign accents, while very good, are distracting and pull one out of the story. I could not follow what he was saying at all.

Zora Neale Hurston was so very talented, and Ruby Dee does a fantastic job of reading the text. The dialog is priceless.

This is the second reading I've attempted by John Lee. His accent grates on my nerves so that he ruins the texts for me. His Spanish accent is oddly slow, and while the pronunciation is correct, it sounds stilted and invariably pulls me out of the story when he comes to a word in Spanish. His English is also punctuated by odd humming pauses.

My mistake, but I was looking for several stories there are not among those offered here. I should have chosen a different Borges offering. In addition, the Hurley translation differs substantially from several others I compared it with.
